Sony Exec Admits PlayStation VR May Not Match Oculus Rift in Terms of Quality

"It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable."

2016 is poised to be the year that virtual reality really kicks off, as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive are all scheduled to come out this year. Now, Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito has spoken up to compare the PlayStation 4 VR headset to Oculus Rift, giving Facebook's device the edge when it comes to technical quality.

But whereas Rift (and Vive) require a PC in the $1,000 range, PlayStation VR will work with any of the 36 million PS4 consoles already in the market. It's aiming to be a mass-market device.

No Caption Provided

"If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR," Ito said in an interview with Polygon. "However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It's for the mass market."

The full Poygon interview goes into a lot more depth on the origins of PlayStation VR and Sony's goals and ambitions for the device. You can read the story here.

PlayStation VR is officially scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2016, though a GameStop executive recently said the release date may be pushed to fall 2016. Sony will hold a PlayStation VR-focused event at the Game Developers Conference next week where we may finally learn the system's price and release date, though this is not confirmed at this point.

In other PlayStation VR news, Sony has announced that children under 12 should not use the device.

I own an Oculus Developer kit and I just think VR much like Kinect just too dramatically changes the way we play games and has too many sacrifices to be more than a fad. The #1 problem has nothing to do with the performance of the technology but social concerns.

The entire experience is far too isolating which leads to countless limitations you just would never expect.

I don't have kids myself but I have a bird who can fly around and could possibly get herself into trouble. Once you put on the VR and you crank the volume up in headphones your kids could have the knives out throwing them at each other and you would have no clue. In my case a loud noise outside could have startled the bird sending her flying and now she is crawling around somewhere in the house biting through power chords. Extremely serious consequences could be going on all around me and I have no clue. So as I would play my VR "game" I find myself every 2 minutes having to 'peek' to make sure that my bird is still sitting there fine on her perch. I'm sure parents would be doing the same thing all the time with their kids as well.

Another thing is that VR is all or nothing and it puts already strained conversions between gamers and significant others under even more strain. Playing a game on my PC my wife and ask me what I want for dinner and I can answer and make quick eye contact and go back to playing. Not with VR. You have to get pulled all the way out and it becomes awkward when to put the VR gear back on and go back to your game vs keep up a conversation.

People don't realize how these patterns in our life are so ingrained and how much VR will upset what may already be a rather delicate situation. You won't see your wife's eye rolls as you cut off the conversation to put back on the VR gear but it doesn't take long until you realize there is no easy way to tell someone you would prefer to have them out of your reality entirely for the time being.

This is a technology that I would fear if it does catch on greatly would make the distraction from cell phones and people using facebook and texting seem like nothing. Everyone would be just in their little isolated reality and people only talking to each other just look enough to pacify them until they can run back to their VR isolation chamber. The Hololens approach seems far more socially acceptable.

@DuaneDog: It's the same thing I've noticed. VR is a cool thing to try at a convention for 5 mins, but actually using it to play games at home would probably turn me more paranoid than let me relax and immerse myself in the game. "Did I hear something? Did you say something?", "Is my food burning?"

But then again we have to remember that unfortunately, and by self-decision there are millions of people who don't have pets or people in same household, decide to live in isolation and so on. VR could net millions from those people alone. Successful business is usually aimed at someone, not trying to cater to everyone's needs.

@DuaneDog: wow. I just read a well thought out comment, I'm stunned. Mate I could not agree with you more I am already deeply concerned about the family unit as it is, and a world were VR is the norm is kinda scary in alot of ways.

I don't think it can fail either as there is far to much money invested from very wealthy people.

I am 30 very soon and I have just had a beautiful baby girl. I had saved money in the expectation that as my bday pressie I would buy the PSVR. But after doing my own thinking and reading your comments, I don't think I will.

I'm not going to be the start of an absent parent or have my girl watch me and think that's normal. I really hope people really consider this.

@Bjjallday@DuaneDog@PrpleTrtleBuBum: To be honest I think all of you in this thread are barking mad. But hey, it's your money, you don't have to advance with technology if you don't want to, it'll just leave you behind and take the people who are ready with it. No worries.

"May not", lol, no shit, it was always budget VR. PS4 is underpowered for true VR and Sony isn't opening PSVR up for PC, so it was already a certainty.

@scoobydoobydont: The idea of PS4 being "underpowered for VR" is utter nonsense that asserts there is some kind of "minimum requirement" for VR which too is nonsense as no such thing exists. If what you said were true, (and to be clear, it isn't), then Gear VR wouldn't exist, which even though it's the lowest end of VR is actually still really good at what it does.

Having tried all 4 major headsets, I can tell you that PSVR felt the smoothest, fastest, and had no screendoor effect while the other headsets did have very noticeable screendoor. PSVR also felt the most comfortable on my head. People need to realize that Sony has been developing visual headsets since 1989 so they have a far superior grasp on tech implementation than HTC and Oculus would, they simply have vastly more experience in this space. Hardware is not simply about the specs themselves but also how the technology is implemented and managed.

The only big advantage the PC headsets have is higher resolution, but I ask, what good is a better resolution when you're looking at a picture that looks like a porch screen is over it? I'm surprised the media isn't bringing this up, but this is a rude awakening that the "PC is God" crowd is about to get, a well-earned rude awakening.

It's obviously a little disappointing to know the Sony VR will be the 'worst' of the 3. That being said if it comes in several hundred dollars less and doesn't require anything but a firmware update to the ps4 then I'm happy enough to go with a lesser option. At the end of the day I don't have a PC capable of running VR nor do I game on a PC enough to justify the upgrade. Having never experienced the rift or vive it's not like I'd have a comparison to go off anyway. It can't be that bad Sony aren't going to release a pile of crap for $400-$500.

@lukey52: that's the point infact, I think sony made quite the deal in this, for some high end pc owner VR or vive will probably do regardless, but for average ppl sony has made quite a deal, given the thought of how many people own a ps4 I got to say the thing will be quite tempting for many (=

Guess what? HTC Vive outshines Oculus Rift. Sure it's more expensive that OR but right now, in terms of quality Vive is king.

@berserker66666: Dont know how anyone can claim one is better than the other other than subjective reports by beta testers. Software will determine the winner and right now Rift sees to have the edge, especially given the crap software included with vive. Who ever gets the current big games (GTAV, Fallout, etc) to incorporate their tech well will be the real winner.

@berserker66666: The difference between Vive and Rift is even smaller than the difference between PS4 and Xbone, which is to say not even worth bringing up its so tiny. And Occulus has the content, content is king.

Not really something he had to 'admit'. Surely any reasonable person was assuming there would be a difference? As is usual for the console market, it will differentiate itself with the benefits of auto-compatibility and plug and play ease of use, and hopefully also the fact that there is a huge incentive for Sony to ensure they have a large, quality library of titles for the platform.

Of course it won't everyone should had known this by now.Sony will slap a $400 price tag on it and it will be a low end VR device it's going to flop. Also with sales of the PS4 at 36 million that puts the XOne at 24 million since EA has released 60 million console has been sold between the two. That's crazy i was thinking around 23 million XOnes had been sold nice to see sony clearing things up

@nNFL2K: The CEO of ea said between the two next gen consoles there are 60 million in homes. And ea doesn't make wiiu games. Then everyone else just did math cause Sony last number was 36 it could be 38 by the time he said it. It's more of a ballpark figure.

I think this pretty much goes without saying, just like how the PS4 obviously can't outperform a powerful PC. I'm not at all bothered by this, if I wanted the absolute state of the art in hardware, I'd build a truly powerful PC and use VR with that. But I prefer a PS4.

Hope this means it'll be $349. I'm completely happy with the ps4s graphics. There are so many games out that I've gotten lately that have really surprised me in the graphic area. Maybe I'm old school, but to me, the graphics look great. Even tomb raider on 360 looked pretty amazing. So many people saying these consoles are weak. Reminds me of the corvette... it gets faster every year, but 0-60 in 3 secs, or 0-60 in 5... does it really matter? Awesome either way. The psvr was never supposes to compete directly with rift in terms of performance just as the ps4 doesn't compete with the latest PC in performance. Hopefully it'll cost half the price and have a ton of software.

@joshrmeyer: The problem is you can not expect the same PS4 graphics from VR, it will be much lower.

Also, "does it really matter?". Yes, it does and it will matter more and more when we go further into the life span of the consoles.

this thing is going to fail because of cost alone, the reason they never said how much is because they understand and know that the price is way to high already. Anybody with a ps4 at this point just brought a machine that they will honestly never get best experience out of. sony understood that the more components they release for it to have an impact on sales, the more money they can make under the ps brand name.

ok people, main thing we can take from this is it wont cost 600....im guessing 399 making total purchase around 800 including tax if you get a ps4 on sale....while i like the prospect of 399 for psvr, you can build a beast pc "using beast loosely" for that total. if i were someone wanting vr i would take that initial investment, build a rig, and wait out the vr pricing. for 800 you can get a haswell quad i5 , a 970, a decent mobo, ok case, and maybe squeeze an ssd along side your 3.5 inch 1tb drive. p.s.....morpheus sounds better

@haze0986: It is so clear you have no idea what building an optimal VR PC rig would cost. The GPU and CPU alone with cost you around $550-600, the rest of the PC of course can't be cheap'd out on since VR like Oculus or Vive requires a decent load of hardware, so you're looking at at least 16GB RAM, power supply healthy enough to run everything, a case with proper cooling, and if you're looking for both an SSD to boot from (presumably 128-250GB range) and a 1TB HDD, you're looking at easily $140 right there, along with the monitor, which is useless with a VR capable rig if it's anywhere below 1080p (at least $150+) with all peripherals - but not even including peripherals, you're looking to spend no less than $1100 to run VR on a reasonable level of performance. Then stack on the price of the headset itself ($600-800) and you REALLY think it's cheaper than an $800 PS4/VR bundle? Get a hold of your mind man.

@haze0986: both the card and the processor you mentioned sells for around $280 a piece. Suppose you find one on a deal - $200. That's $400. There's no way you're buying everything else in under $350 ( A motherboard, power supply, RAM, hardrive, and case - each of those things average out around [roughly] $80 a piece, and that's on the cheap side). I don't know where you live, but making a average gaming rig (and starting from scratch) will take at least > $850 (excluding tax). You can build one for less, but it'll literally be only comparable to consoles.

Sure you can wait out for extreme deals and go bargain hunting, but that discounts the cost of searching.

And that still doesn't factor in all of the peripherals. Mouse, Keyboard, Sound, Monitor (presumably you're not building a rig solely for VR), and of course, the VR. And further suppose that prices for VR drops in a few (2-3) years - to say, $250. By that time. the specs of your rig will have been marginally outdated.

No, from a cost standpoint (not including software), there's no way that's cheaper.

@Oogazi: i think you are rushing to conclusions a bit.
Looking from the current point in time, you are right, but VR isn't gonna be market ready anytime soon (meaning game support, no must-preorder crap).
Am guessing it will be available in 6-9 months, and that will be after the new lineup of GPUs are already established (meaning the prices of GPU that can deliver the required performance will decrease and their numbers will increase, especially since amd is going 14nm with the new lineup).
Same goes for new CPUs especially since old CPUs are still viable ( FX6300 or better or i5 from 3 years ago are sufficient).
Point is, when the VR race really starts for us consumers (more games, price drops to 500-600, more cheap hardware that can run it), with the addition of large number of discounted prices for games , it may be cheaper then getting a console + Morpheus (+games, PSN price ofc). And that's not counting the difference in VR quality.

Imho, Morpheus isn't a good idea for the current gen. Forcing it on the current tech is gonna be bad rep for Sony and PS4 especially since people will buy it massively. It will be a product with limited performance and features, requiring additional hardware/box that will render the picture at lower fps and at lower resolution (when compared to the OR or Vive).

I would just skip the hype train, save trust and people's will to invest money and with the release of a new gen offer an experience that is comparable, more enjoyable with more game support, so that the consumers would be happy about buying it (and not looking for discounts the moment it was announced, knowing already that it's not a comparable experience)
