Sony Exec Hints That We'll Be Able To Change PSN Names Within The Year

Today at PSX, PS4 boss responds to the often asked question.

Tonight at PlayStation Experience, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden gave a glimmer of hope that PlayStation users may finally be able to change their PSN names. In an interview following the PSX keynote, Layden started off by joking, "The elves at the North Pole have been working on it." He went on to say that the ability to change your PSN name is "more complex than you think" when it comes to what has to happen behind the scenes from a technical standpoint.

All of that being said, Layden said he hopes Sony will give players the ability to change their PSN names by PSX 2018. "I hope we'll see events occur that you won't have to ask me that question next PSX," he said to interviewer Greg Miller who started his exchange with Layden by asking about the ability to change a PSN name.

Name-changing has been available for years on Xbox platforms. The first name change is free on Xbox, while additional changes incur a fee. We don't know how it would work on PlayStation, if it ever happens.

Sony's explanation for why you cannot change your PSN name has bounced around a bit over the years. In 2014, Layden explained that it wasn't a technical issue keeping the feature from being implemented, but instead it came down to trolling prevention. In 2015, another PlayStation executive, Shuhei Yoshida, said Sony's engineers were looking into it but were unsure if it would ever be possible to deliver the feature.

That's a pretty non-committal hint.

@livedreamplay: steam does let you change your community ID.

from steamsupport: "Your Steam Community ID can be changed at any time in your Steam Community settings, under "Edit my SteamID page""

and xbox does let you change it (at least) once for free.. somebody at work told me they've done it more then once for free.. BUT.. officially, it says on microsofts site you can change it once for free and after that "it varies by location"

@wanderz: Xbox lets you change it once for free because the first ID is assigned by them randomly, so people would be incredibly pissed if they were stuck with the Funny Kitty 29 gamertag lol.

Didn't know steam introduced the option to change the ID, it was fairly recently for them too.

It's so incredibly complex that Microsoft knew how to do it 10 years ago. That is just so complex!

So still not a sure-fire thing then? Sony programmers really are pathetic if they can't make this possible.

@alling4: Mods, PLEASE block this user's IP address, I'm sick of seeing spam for this same 'Tag30' corporation.

Hopefully in 2018. I was thinking of changing my name to get a new account despite me having mine for nearly 10 years now since my old name no longer has any relevance to me. It's been killing me how I changed my name almost everywhere but there.

Place bets on how much they're gonna charge for that.

@Tiwill44: Xbox charges 15$, for Steam you need a premium account (so $5), I'm guessing somewhere along the lines of these...

@livedreamplay: Hmm, but your Steam account becomes premium forever the moment you buy any game over 5 bucks... I mean, why would someone want to change their name on an account that owns zero games?

@Tiwill44: I own over 100 games on Steam, I didn't spend 5 bucks on their platform. I usually buy Humble Bundles when I like the games and just redeem the codes on Steam.

@Tiwill44: Xbox charges $15 I believe. It would be very unwise to breatch $20 or people will go all “Battlefront 2” on Sony.

@KahnArtizt: I changed my name on Xbox, and it was free. I believe they charge if you want to do it a second time.

@sealionact: Well Xbox assigns you their own gamertag first, so it would've been even more ridiculous to charge money the first time around...

@livedreamplay: Who told you that? Xbox gives suggestions...it doesn't assign. When you sign up, if you just want a quick start, you'll end up with an assigned name...but you only have to change it before accepting the terms.

You then have another name change available free of charge after signing up.

@sealionact: No, it doesn't work like that. It assigns you a randomly generated gamertag, and then you can change it once for free, that's it.

Basically it replaces the feature of choosing it yourself at the beginning with the feature of changing their predefined one.

I know, I was disappointed too...

@wanderz: I looked into changing my name once and read on some xbox live page that it was $10. I never heard anything about it becoming free.
