Sony exploring 'many' options for PS4 pricing

PlayStation maker says it is "very happy" with $399 pricing, but notes it will explore other options to see "what feels most comfortable" in the future.

Sony is exploring "many" options for PlayStation 4 pricing, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot last evening.

No Caption Provided

Asked if Sony may introduce a subsidized PS4 model, Yoshida explained that Sony is "very happy" with the $399 price point ($100 below Xbox One), but left open the possibility for new options in the future.

"We are interested to explore many different sections to [understand] what feels most comfortable in purchasing the PS4," Yoshida said. "But initially, we are pretty much focused on getting the right price. And we are very happy with the price."

Microsoft currently offers a subsidized Xbox 360, allowing gamers to grab the system for $99 if they commit to a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription at a cost of $15 per month. The deal would cost less up front, but consumers will wind up spending more in the long run.

Yoshida also suggested that Sony may offer multiple PS4 models at launch, which was rumored yesterday.

"So we are not yet talking about day-one SKUs or options like that," he said. "As we approach the holiday we will be able to announce."

The PS4 will play used games and won't require an online check-in. The system's design is "almost" final.

Hey Sony, how about for starters you explore charging only an extra $100 in Aust like MS is for the X1 instead of an extra $150?

I thought Sony was going to have a higher end model than the base $399 PS4 available at launch as well. I was waiting for an announcement on that.

Ok, I get that PS4 is being the good guy in it's price point...BUT I want to know how much the games will cost! Not paying a big ben every time I want to play something different. That would certainly offset the low $400 system cost.

@mInDsHiFtEr Why would they cost more than XBOne games? They will be similarly priced as always, and most likely the same price as PS3 games at launch.

No thanks to the Microsoft for offered $499 XBOX ONE. I already preordered the PS4 on Amazon that the PS4's price cutted $100 off. <3 Sony and Nintendo!

"The deal would cost less up front, but consumers will wind up spending more in the long run."

And that is exactly why I never go for these deals. It's always cheaper if you are able to pay up front. Of course this isn't always possible but a console is not a huge cost like a house or a car, etc...

What other SKU's? Unless they will have a 1 Terabyte version, which would be fine with me, but I won't pay $500 for it. My only downside with the PS4 is their controller. I hope they fixed all the issues. I won't know until I actually hold it in my hands.

@blackace I don't care what other SKUs they bring out (unless they bring out smaller HDD's) as the HDD is upgradable, like the PS3, so you can always get a bigger one later on

I had to post this somewhere. It's so great to be missed. It makes everything clear; 1- only one PS+ membership is requiered for PS4 to play multiplayer on all accounts on the PS4. 2- Free To Play games on the PSN might or might not be locked behind the PS+, it's a game by game decision.

They do break easily. This is my only real complaint about the PS3. Its not that the cases break, but the sticks go bad. I play on average about 2 hours a day and I usually get about 4 months of use out of a controller.

@CaptainSofa Yeah i thought so my Xbox controllers lasted me a year until the sticks got lopsided and ruined. and that was playing nearly everyday,Looks like im going to have to take so much more care with these ps4 controllers as they are expensive to replace!

@kareem306 As a PS2 and PS3 owner, I would say that their controllers are plenty durable. I've play an Xbox and a Xbox 360 only a few times but the one thing I didn't like that well was the controller. The Xbox controller is so chunky and bulky feeling compared to the Playstation.

@inscript except you can download a portion of the game and start playing right away. You will have access to all PS3 games via Gaikai and remote play a lot of PS4 games on a Vita.

@inscript You can pre-order PS4 console for $550 in Australia, games marked at $118. Most new games cost $100+ in a store or from a local online business.

I hope more people here start to realise buying games from the UK is an option that gets you games for what the rest of the world is complaining about - half the local price! Peace.

@jecomans @blackace @falloutworld272 @inscript Why would you buy only digital games? Usually my has a few installs (like 28) and the rest is filled by dlc. 250gig did it this gen I don't see how it would bother me next. Either way the HDD is exchangable and NOT proprietary like the fucking Vita so 2TB here I come!

The more exoensive the hardware the more mature the audience. In the next gen we'll need to welcome the shouting COD fanboys. PSN is a great place where gamers are more matured and not once in my experience heard any shouting or screaming. Even PC we can hear screeaming nerds. Action speaks louder on PSN.

Its $100 cheaper because MS included the Kinect crap with it instead of on the side. If Sony tossed the move crap in - they would be the same price.

@Triton the eye is actually 60$ so no it would not be the same price it would be 40$ cheaper. Also the eye is not required to play the system unlike the kinect. So if your kinect breaks you can't play the xbox one till you get a new one if your ps eye breaks you can still play.

@Triton The controller has a Move built in and the PS4 comes with a camera which tracks the controller. The Kinect is more advanced to be fair, but it's still un needed.

@fillup0 @Triton the camera isn't included with the system you have to buy it separately that said it's only needed for move games so it's simply an option if you want it (camera is sixty btw so it's still cheaper than the XB1).

@Triton But Sony doesn't seem to be pushing the Move nearly as hard as Kinect, and that doesn't look like it will change anytime soon.

To Microsoft's credit, they really did give Kinect a decent push on the 360. Playstation Move, however, never really went anywhere outside of a handful of games made exclusively for it and support for more traditional games.
