Sony exploring 'many' options for PS4 pricing

PlayStation maker says it is "very happy" with $399 pricing, but notes it will explore other options to see "what feels most comfortable" in the future.

Sony is exploring "many" options for PlayStation 4 pricing, Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told GameSpot last evening.

No Caption Provided

Asked if Sony may introduce a subsidized PS4 model, Yoshida explained that Sony is "very happy" with the $399 price point ($100 below Xbox One), but left open the possibility for new options in the future.

"We are interested to explore many different sections to [understand] what feels most comfortable in purchasing the PS4," Yoshida said. "But initially, we are pretty much focused on getting the right price. And we are very happy with the price."

Microsoft currently offers a subsidized Xbox 360, allowing gamers to grab the system for $99 if they commit to a two-year Xbox Live Gold subscription at a cost of $15 per month. The deal would cost less up front, but consumers will wind up spending more in the long run.

Yoshida also suggested that Sony may offer multiple PS4 models at launch, which was rumored yesterday.

"So we are not yet talking about day-one SKUs or options like that," he said. "As we approach the holiday we will be able to announce."

The PS4 will play used games and won't require an online check-in. The system's design is "almost" final.

That's not true. DRM has always been on the shoulders of the publishers. Microsoft added in a new and obnoxious tool for developers to use as DRM and are supporting it.

Sony did not lie. They said they wouldn't force DRM or online checks on customers or forced online connections. Just like they do not do now. EA did online passes which was DRM but it had nothing to do with sony.

Jesus, get your facts straight before you go running off at the mouth.

PS4 seems excellent, but it doesn't look that good, and I wonder if it has enough ports for wired controllers. So I would be interested in a remodel.

On the other hand I hate how there are 2142 versions of current consoles. Original PS3, X360 Arcade and Pro consoles are jokes.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum I could care less how it looks. Make it have the correct specs, and I'm sure it will have enough ports, and you could make it look stupid as hell. I just want a console that runs properly, and focuses on gaming personally.

Im good with 400.

But if they can do other options for people who cant afford 400, or make a great bundle for a little more that's ok.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had a ps4 and vita bundle. That would be a good deal for people who want both.

@thequickshooter Eh, if they want to offer better to people who want to pay more, or offer less for people who can't afford the $400 version, it's not going to bother me. I've lived with the 360 doing it. Ultimately, I'm just going to get whichever one works the best for me, and let everyone else get the one that works for them.

I think I'd be interested in a bundle that included a PS Vita and the PS eye.

I'd be okay with a different price than $399 depending on what came with it. For example, there were a couple of sweet looking games that Sony showed yesterday as well. If, just as an example, there was a Watch Dogs bundle or one that had an extra controller or something like that I could see being flexible on the $399 price point.

Half of the price is the total dollar amount, but the other half is what you GET for that dollar amount.

Well let me know Sony. I already pre-ordered PS4... but if you've got a more expensive one I'll get that one instead... why? ZERO RESTRICTIONS.

That is invaluable.

Maybe they'll have a game bundled with it or something. They had said Infamous 3 wasn't coming until January, but maybe Watchdogs?

@Valkyrslayer Seriously, It'd absolutely get the Vita into FAR more hands than it'd reach as a standalone product.

If I didn't already have a Vita, then I'd definitely be onboard with something like that.

@eaterofsouls2 @Naedeslus that would make the Vita $200 hmm that wouldn't be that good of an offer since you can get it for that price on amazon separately already now. I'd say $550
