Sony introduces 'Day 1 Digital' campaign

Publisher offering 8 titles including Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, and MoH: Warfighter as day-one downloads in October; some available at $54 for PS Plus preorders.

PlayStation 3 gamers won't need to leave their homes to pick up some of October's biggest games. Sony announced today a new campaign called "Day 1 Digital" that lets gamers pick up eight big-name titles through the PlayStation Network day-and-date with their retail arrival.

Why leave the house?
Why leave the house?

These titles include Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, Medal of Honor Warfighter, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Dishonored, NBA 2K13, Doom 3: BFG Edition, and 007 Legends.

Sony also announced that gamers who hold a PlayStation Plus subscription and elect to preorder titles will be able to download select games at a reduced rate. PS Plus members who preorder Doom 3: BFG Edition can get the game for $36 instead of $40, while Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and NBA 2K13 will be available for $54 instead of $60 for those who plunk down a reservation fee.

Additionally, 007 Legends will be available to PS Plus subscribers during launch week at a 10 percent markdown. The game will retail for $60, meaning gamers can save $6 by purchasing the new James Bond title October 16-23.

Wow I can save a 5 dollars, thanks Sony.

Give us real deals and I would rather pay the 5 dollars and actually OWN the game, instead of it having it where it has to be online to use.

Not sure why you would do this at ALL. You don't own the copy, you can't sell the copy, you can't loan it to friends, it costs bandwidth/memory, and someday when the server is down you don't get the game anymore. I seriously will NEVER support digital unless it is less than half the price as it should be.

Atleast with Steam you can backup the files and not have to be online to use them.

On PS3 you can't do this, so say 20 years from now I want to play RE6 (which I don't because Capcom sucks and RE4 and 5 sucked) and I downloaded it from PSN and say PSN is shut down or no longer supports PS3 games, I lost my money and can't get the game back. Unlike the physical disc where I can play that game 20 years later.

No, you get it wrong, what he mean is that when Valve / Steam ceased to work, Valve will provide all your games that you can play off-line, there's something called fail-safe =/

that only happens if Valve burned down, or bankrupt,, but at current point you still need internet connection.

it's not bad idea since you can play online with your friends,, if you really want your current steam games in off-line mode that bad, download the crack instead (I don't condone any kind of piracy though.) but if you already support developers/publishers it's fine to have that.

@ant2967 @suprsolider @Martyr77 Yeah the preorders are cheaper by one dollar gimme a break only reason your hating on this is because its not steam. Let me remind you that Borderlands 2 is 59.99 on steam. There's a lot of psn classics you can get for 5 to 10 dollars. Even ps2 classics for 10 bucks. Heck i can play my ps3 digital downloads offline with no problem not having to sign in and click on offline mode, then hoping when the internet is out, can sign in via offline on steam. People are complaining just to complain as much as you hate to admit it.

I know you all are bashing digital games, I like the phisical copy better too, but here in my country more and more ppl are buying it since you can bypass the 100% plus tax that gov issues on videogames, the same game that you guys buy for 60 butterflies there costs double that amount here after goverment works their miracle tax policies. Just trying to make a point here, what doesn't work for some might work for others...

I like having both retail and digital options. Though I'm more likely to purchase anticipated games at retail and back-log games used or digital. I like that digital is discounted (makes sense since no retail distro fees), but I'm not so happy about those being tied to PS Plus accounts. Though I'll take that over forcing me to use PS Plus to access Netflix, Hulu, and the like...

Well, it's there if you want it I guess, but I can get to the store and back faster than I can download a big game from PSN, so...unless they do a Steam-like download earlier and unlock on release day system, I can't see myself using this.

I will say this again, as it seems no one seems to hear me.....I will be more then glad to buy a digital copy of a game as long as there is a major cost difference.....5 bucks is not enough period. Step it up or just stop trying......

As a gaming collector I prefer a physical copy(I have all my games from my orgianl PS and xbox in Mint condition). However, there are a few games that i will buy a second copy that would be digital I.E DeadSpace 1,2 and extraction, Starhawk, RE series, Silent Hills, etc. When they cut out the middle person and have no physical labor in making a physical copy how is the digital priced the same? If retail is $65 including tax, the digital should be at most $40, how is it being sold for the full value? I don't understand and won't buy it until 1-2 years later when it's $20

I just wish Sony would get their act together and release the rest of the PSOne games promised for the Vita in the US. I'm sick of using emulators to play them. I want to give Sony money to play them on my Vita but they would rather have me play them on my phone and not get anything for them I guess.

@atopp399 I definitely feel your pain. I have an Experia Play (the "psp phone") and I have to resort to emulators to play PS games on it because Sony has only made about 10 titles available over the last year and a half. They're not even good titles.

I would be happy if they would take $10 off the retail price. It's kind of hard to sell the digital idea to people when the digital version is being sold for $54 and the physical copy can be found for $40. If they kept their prices in tune with the current market, they could succeed.

I embrace digital for games that may not sell at retail and fully embrace it for handheld games, but I still prefer physical for home.

@seekerofangels Come on folks, we are all gamers here, can't we get along for a while?

I bought a PS3 mainly because I love Sony Studios and their games, but to a lot of people that doesn't matter and that is fine. Encouragess competition which in turn lead to some bold moves like this one. :)

God, gamers just don't give a damn about their rights, or they're that stupid. Someone in the comments here actually said digital is more expensive. And people still mention the 360? Come on guys, it's over. You've spent at least $50 bucks a year since 2005 to have advertisements thrown in your face and play with 12 year olds.

What an asinine remark. Every one on my friends list is at least over the age of 20 and I play games like X-Men, TMNT, SF, KOF, Halo, L4D, DOA on there all the time. I haven't encountered not one 12 year old in the last 2 years.

They exist on any gaming platform including PC. As to why some say they're more vocal on LIVE is because XB 360 includes a headset. Which is more than I can say for PS3. I guarantee you if Sony added a mic to every bundle you'd see just as many immature brats. Stop pretending you're apart of some elitist society.

@zpluffy @seekerofangels If you consider 11 year olds shouting constant racist remarks during CoD and Halo better, then yes 360 has a much better community.

I think this is a GREAT news, it's good for the customer to choose if they want a digital or physical copy of the game from day 1. I'm really glad they're doing this. In my country we have to wait almost for 1 month for the games to be released here, but with this we don't have to wait anymore :)

@rtype21 No they aren't. Those customers are getting bent over just as much as gaming customers. Yes. They should be cheaper. The cost of physically manufacturing, packaging, handling and shipping are all completely removed the equation. I don't think anybody here is pointing their finger at movies, music, etc for them being cheaper. People just know that this stuff should be cheaper now. Unfortunately the general gaming community will think they are getting a steal @ $54 and this will just be the new normal price. I miss the days when gaming was not popular. When there were brains in the industry. The gaming industry needs another 1983 is what it needs.

It's a cool idea, but I'll most likely stick with my physical copies, despite the fact that I'm a PS Plus member and I plan on getting Doom 3 BFG Edition.

I wonder though. If I pre-order Doom 3 and am a Plus member, will the game automatically purchase and download when the store updates with it? If so, I may do it.

Sorry if most folks around here can't share my enthusiam. :P

Price shouldn't be more than $30 for digital copies. There is no middle man to pay a cut to and the game cannot be resold. Quit being so damn greedy.
