Sony Is Making It Harder To Buy Digital PS3 And Vita Content On October 27

Sony reversed its decision to shut down the digital storefronts earlier this year but now it's getting rid of payment options.

Sony has announced that starting on October 27, users can no longer use credit or debit cards, as well as payment methods such as PayPal, in order to purchase digital content or add funds to the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 or PS Vita systems.

If users want to continue purchasing PS3 and Vita digital content, then sufficient funds need to be added to their accounts in other ways. PlayStation Store gift cards are one example. Additionally, credit or debit cards and systems like PayPal will still work on desktop, mobile, PS4, and PS5 versions of the PlayStation Store, so users can add funds through those and then subsequently use them to purchase digital content on PS3 and Vita.

If certain games have an in-game store, content such as DLC is still purchasable through them, but users will still need to pay using wallet funds on the PlayStation Store.

While this situation applies to all regions, it will impact Japan's users in another way. In Japan, games with the CERO Z rating (meaning that they are suitable for age 18 and up) on digital platforms require a credit card to verify a customer's age. The Japanese version of the support page confirms that after this store update, users will not be able to purchase CERO Z games. Fortunately, DLC for CERO Z games will still be available for purchase and already purchased content will continue to be available for download.

Sony is winding down support for its legacy content. Earlier this year, Sony announced that it would be closing down its PS3, Vita, and PSP digital storefronts. However, Sony eventually reversed part of its decision after the announcement's backlash. The PS3 and Vita stores would remain online for the time being but the PSP storefront closure went as planned.

At least Sony was kind enough to wait until PS3 emulation started to start getting better.

As a Nintendo fan, I'll admit that the PS3 had some memorable, solid, high quality games that'll go down in the books, but I always laughed at the Vita. (In fact, I would say Gran Turismo 5 is in my Top 3, and now I'm gonna go play it.)

As far as hardware, it was the best handheld. Until the Switch, anyway, and that's quite a bit bigger. This allowed for some ports that couldn't work on any other handheld... until the Switch.

This is exactly why I keep saying that not having backwards compatibility makes the PS5 a bad console.

We will lose entire generations of games because of this type of callous disregard of the medium.

@dragonsama: But it does have backwards Compatibility. With literally 5000 PS4 games and PSVR and all of its accessories too.

Try loading a Kinect camera up on series s. Don't bother, you can't. Facts.

@Ikzai: Not on consoles where generations are a thing. It's a little better on PC where it's cross generations, but you'd still have other issues that are common to consoles such as licensing delisting on top of market fragmenting. At least it's possible to look up fixes and work arounds for game issues.

Everyone understands this isn't some evil scheme to piss off the userbase, right? And it's just a sensational title? It's just very standard systemic updates. It sucks, and it's their fault for screwing up in the first place, but it's not like they're cutting us off. Retiring legacy systems is a very normal thing that has been a thing since...well, the beginning.

I wish they would do a big sale before this, like 80% off everything. If I knew the last PS3 digital sale would be in February 2020, I would have bought more then (and I did buy quite a bit).

I would never give Sony my debit or credit card number anyways. Remember what happened in 2011? Besides, the PS Vita store has been broken for a long time now. Why don't they take it out of its misery already? Gamers who still play Vita regularly are most likely playing on a modded console, so the store going down isn't going to a problem. Same for PS3. There's no benefit to buying games on the PS3 store, considering how they still want full price for games which are cheap and plentiful in physical format.

Hello, DLC exists for PS3 games and there are numerous games that never got physical releases. Tons of content will cease to exist in any format when Sony gets their way.

Now this is just getting whiny. They're not actively trying to snub their fans. They're just consolidating their systems and moving support to newer, less finicky platforms. You can still buy PSN cards for all of your purchases, and you can still buy funds from the PS4/5 for use on the PS3/Vita/whatever. Obviously certain systems are no longer supported and it's cheaper to consolidate those payment systems in NEWER, active platforms rather than maintaining the legacy platforms (remember all the broke as shit stuff on PS3? Can't fix them; only way is to implement new database structures). I mean, really, if you haven't bought all the PS3 games you want to play by now, than you likely don't care to buy any more.

The Leadership at Sony are really nickel & diming the customers..

When was the last time we heard "ps3 ~or~ Vita" and it was good news?

I think this leadership began when they relaunched the PS3 without Backwards compatability..

How epic would it have been if PS5 had the capability to read PS3+PS2 discs?

If that model we're $100 more would you buy it?

@sippio: Did you forget the PS3 had full BC functionality? It cost a lot more because of it. Guess what? It sold very poorly. It didn't really take off until the price dropped significantly and they dropped PS2 support. The reality is BC support is more of a vocal minority thing and history has proven people aren't willing to pay more for it.

That's why what MS did was pretty nifty. They don't charge more, they just update the APU to make the BC improvements native. It's not nearly as big a deal as their marketing teams would lead you to believe, but was a smart move.

@Barighm: Wrong. There was a price break down of the system and it wasn't backwards compatibility that made the system expensive. It was the blue-ray drive.

@Barighm: Well, it's all emulation running on native Windows w/DirectX, so it's pretty easy for MS to carry forward indefinitely now. They also normalized all their Store packaging, entitlement, and APIs over the last 2 years, so all this transactional stuff is universal too.

i.e., the only real difference is that they did all the heavy lifting up front, instead of picking and choosing.

Good compromise. Keeps the stores open and easily usable while also lowering costs to Sony and eliminating risk to financial information.

Makes perfect sense to me. I get wanting to preserve legacy products but that's the well understood risk associated with digital stores fronts.

@LeoKRock: Why? Because they're jettisoning outdated hardware? They all do that. Even the Xbox's much vaunted BC only includes a handful of original Xbox games. Why are people acting like dropping legacy support is a huge thing?

@Barighm: @Barighm: old standards. Microsoft is maintaining full functionality on the 360 store, even for games that are not backwards compatible.

The PS3 generation was the first to truly embrace online and digital. Nintendo also took a lot of flack for cutting the WiiShop.

Why are they so insistent on making purchasing legacy content harder? Like, I can't imagine it's expensive for them to keep the games and storefront up for the PS3 and Vita. Such a bizarre decision from Sony.

@adam-orzel: Im sure you know this Adam but buying/collecting PS3+PS2

era games surprisingly fun. Esp when you get em uber cheap..

But Sony for sure is planning something with legacy content.

Then again they are grimy af with current leadership..

Seems like a lifetime ago that the launch PS3 was Backwards Compat.

*What is annoying alot of people is not being able to get patches for games people own on disc..

Dude,, im sure if they do this we could get patches via usb butterstick but seems annoying...
