Sony Is Making It Harder To Buy Digital PS3 And Vita Content On October 27

Sony reversed its decision to shut down the digital storefronts earlier this year but now it's getting rid of payment options.

Sony has announced that starting on October 27, users can no longer use credit or debit cards, as well as payment methods such as PayPal, in order to purchase digital content or add funds to the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 or PS Vita systems.

If users want to continue purchasing PS3 and Vita digital content, then sufficient funds need to be added to their accounts in other ways. PlayStation Store gift cards are one example. Additionally, credit or debit cards and systems like PayPal will still work on desktop, mobile, PS4, and PS5 versions of the PlayStation Store, so users can add funds through those and then subsequently use them to purchase digital content on PS3 and Vita.

If certain games have an in-game store, content such as DLC is still purchasable through them, but users will still need to pay using wallet funds on the PlayStation Store.

While this situation applies to all regions, it will impact Japan's users in another way. In Japan, games with the CERO Z rating (meaning that they are suitable for age 18 and up) on digital platforms require a credit card to verify a customer's age. The Japanese version of the support page confirms that after this store update, users will not be able to purchase CERO Z games. Fortunately, DLC for CERO Z games will still be available for purchase and already purchased content will continue to be available for download.

Sony is winding down support for its legacy content. Earlier this year, Sony announced that it would be closing down its PS3, Vita, and PSP digital storefronts. However, Sony eventually reversed part of its decision after the announcement's backlash. The PS3 and Vita stores would remain online for the time being but the PSP storefront closure went as planned.

Such a scammy way from Sony to force people not to use their legacy stores so they can finally shut it down for lack of purchases activity....

What good is any store if you can't use your debit or credit card??

Sony you truly are the worst....

@johnny0779: You can use your debit or credit card to buy PSN cards. This is fake outrage and no surprise to see you're a part of it.

@johnny0779: You can. Just add funds via any other PS console or PC and then purchase on the PS3/Vita. It's cumbersome, but i can imagine Sony is trying to simultaneously appease its customers while closing off vectors for intrusion.

@KahnArtizt: Not everyone has a new PlayStation console. Paid online ruined the PS4 for a number of PS3 owners. As for PC, I was under the impression they shut that option down years ago.

@Jinzo_111887: you can do it on the smartphone app. If you don’t have a smartphone or a PC in 2021, what are you even doing?

@KahnArtizt: The glass would be 1/2 full if Sony wasn't constantly trying to nuke PS3/Vita..

*I personally care cause i kept my PS3 and surprisingly have over 100 games digital. i want to be able to download and still get patches for them.. This is clearly the direction sony is headed..

Sony should invest in a website solution where peeps can link to PS3 or vita or to a usb drive etc.. i'd be fine if they ever offered this.

they wont.

@sippio: even once they shut down the store, Sony said they will keep download options and trophy syncing open.

@xnshd: PS3 and Vita are not up to modern security standards. They don’t even have 2 factor authentication. Sony is trying to shut them down to protect their network from intrusion. And that’s a bad thing, is it?

@xnshd: what kind of security is PS4/5 missing? At least it has 2 factor authentication. PS3 and vita don’t even have that.

@xnshd: What in the last 5 years would indicate that Sony's security is "garbage"? Facts only, no feelings.

@xnshd: YES because they're trying to fix the bigger issues with PSN and they can't do that if they don't update their systems with newer, better systems. They done fucked up in the PS3 era and are getting owned by MS in that area. The only way to catch up is to update their systems.

Why? This sounds completely unnecessary. What is even the point of making it harder for people to buy stuff?

@gamerboy100: I've got a funny feeling it has something to do with trying to funnel more players into PS Now for older games. Why settle for a one-time purchase when they can charge players indefinitely for a subscription?

Security may be a part of it too, but I don't believe for one second that maximizing profit isn't a factor.

@somberfox: They'd make some significant progress if they'd kill off paid online play as it's one reason people stuck with the PS3 instead of getting those new systems.

@somberfox: i bought a XboxSX cause i couldnt even get a PS5.

I hate that sony didn't even consider making PS5 backwards in anyway..

I can't even find the PSTV little box that allows the Vita to play on a tv. it was way outta my price range when i did find a used on e on ebay.. it ended for $140. !!! someday i'll find one or maybe i wont ;/

@gamerboy100: Security is almost certainly the cause. It's the same reason they were going to shut the stores down. This old store and console hardware does not support modern handshake and encryption standards, so it cannot maintain an acceptable level of security for the modern age. This likely includes support for TLS 1.2, which isn't even the newest version.

Adding security code must be done on a low level and is quite challenging and expensive. Additionally, modern security can require the use of TPM chips -- dedicated hardware that verifies hardware identity and stores cryptographic keys.

While annoying, this sounds like a reasonable compromise to me. Handling the financial transactions on a more secure device and leave the store open is preferred to removing the stores.

@TrueLink: Funny how Microsoft doesn't have any issues with the Xbox or Xbox 360 game sales in their stores.

Think about that before the next time you make up an excuse for Sony's shortcomings.

@johnny0779: That's because Microsoft made a forward-thinking online infrastructure. Sony didn't. We all know Sony's online was trash until they overhauled it for PS4. Sony essentially started over with the PS4 and they are desperately trying to close off the remaining security vulnerabilities from previous generations. People think this is anti-consumer but its really for ours and Sony's protection more than anything.

@KahnArtizt: Adding to your point of Microsoft being forward-thinking, they also rebuilt the OS for Xbox 360 twice during the generation. Those rebuilds occurred after a crucial change with the release of TLS 1.1 and later 1.2. There is a reasonable chance that when they rewrote the OS, they improved the security capabilities, and extended the potential life. For comparison their enterprise software prior to the 360 release has similar issues of not supporting modern security options.

Still play my PS3 and PS4 as well as the PS5. So many awesome games that just feel better on the PS3. Everything from Killzone to Uncharted.

@naomha1: This is a fact Naomha..

I noticed this with Batman Arkham Origins on Xbox360.

i was blown away by how much stable and smoother the frames felt on the 360 version.. So i switched to HDMI-1 and played it on xbox1 and confirmed this...

Funny thing is my brother was trying to tell me this about PS4/PS3 games for awhile..

Whoever has a PS3 or Xbox360 should test this for themselves..

~i remember trying to play KOTOR2 on xbox and the words in dialog were in weird Klingon symbols thus making and social of the game unplayable which kinda kills the whole game.. It kinda proved they never tested the game once..
