Sony: Majority of gamers "don't want to buy online right now"

PlayStation marketing executive say it's clear that the "vast majority" of consumers want to buy games at traditional physical retailers.

Physical discs aren't going away anytime soon, as most consumers "don't want to buy online right now," PlayStation marketing executive Guy Longworth has told GamesIndustry International.

No Caption Provided

"I think the reality is this: Our digital business is growing fast, and we have incredibly strong partnerships with our key retail partners as well," Longworth said. "What we try to do is offer a relatively level playing field and let the gamers decide. We're not trying to advantage them, we believe in consumer choice."

"It's clear that the vast majority of the people want to go down to GameStop or Best Buy, they don't want to buy it online right now," he added. "How that might change in the future is kind of hard to predict. People might be quite surprised, I think physical games will be around a lot longer than some people think."

All games for Sony's PlayStation 4 will be available digitally as well as through physical retailers. The same is true for Microsoft's Xbox One.

The PS4 launches later this year for $400, though Sony is exploring "many" different pricing options for the next-generation platform.

I love digital for demos, indies, and hard-to-find titles (as well as re-issues of titles from old hardware), but I hate it for full retail versions of full games. I will always choose physical discs over digital for full games -- always. I don't need internet, don't need to worry about hard drive failure, and don't need to try and remember what games I own, they're sitting on my shelf.

THERE IS NO PRICE INCENTIVE TO BUY ONLINE! How dumb can SONY, XBOX , Nintendo be. Its so god damn obvious to me and has been for years. A $60 retail game should be something like $40 online and then people will buy it. I mean there's no packaging or shipping involved and we lose the value in selling it. But for 2/3 or less of the cost of physical..yeah I would and many would think about buying the game online.

@twizzickle I'm with you, but if they do that they will lose their partnerships with their retail partners. And as you can read in the article, they have a strong partnership, and I don't think they want to piss them off.

@AncientDozer your 100% right considering whats happened to books and cd's and movies... yeah you cant but them but all digital now your right 100% oh wait!!! People still buy books hardcover even thought there more expensive, music yes they still buy that too.

Listen if they can continue to make money selling physical THEY WILL!!!! Might become only a nitch market but if it is still a few million sales a year i think they will take it god damnit... Matter a fact i know they will

Gotta agree with pretty much everything you said. I still want my books in print though, I can't give that up.

And Steam did suck ass early on. It's better now, but still a pain on occasion.

It can be done, hell, it's being done now.

I can't play a game on my console without a physical disk, or if I downloaded it, a digital license. Nothing has to change there.

If they presented a Steam-like model, where you CAN play offline, but if you're online it will need to validate/download updates, that would have probably been fully acceptable, with the family share the icing on the cake.

They have some nice features, I will admit, but their delivery was awful and the mandatory Kinect is going to be a consistent problem for them (speaking to rumors and concerns).

Once again, agreed on all counts with your post.

It's weird as an outside observer (and possible defector), Sony fans seem to favor physical over digital when given the choice, xbox fans seem to favor digital over physical (me being the exception to the rule) but only after the drm switch. There is even a segment that are begging for the return of the original xbox one drm and willing to give away all of their rights to physical ownership in return for a few digital perks....there was even an article that claimed the xbox one is worse now than before the changes.

I feel like I'm in some bizarro universe.

1. 10 minutes driving to a store is so much better than a few hours downloading a game.

2. Physical copy can be traded back and its price drops faster than digital copy.

3. It just feels better having disks of games on your hand than some intangible digital games (collectors know this feeling)

1. It depends on internet speed. Sure it may take upwards of an hour to install/download, but from that point on, clicking on it and it starting up instantly is definitely preferable

2. While you can't trade in PC games, I've observed the opposite regarding price dropping. Most retailers don't update their prices very often.
Not sure about Gamestop/EB

3. I agree, but if that disc breaks, its done. Digital games are forever.

Are you kidding me? I cant think of any $60 console game that can be had for 15 or 20 bucks a month or 2 after it comes out like on PC. Sure its nice to have a physical box copy but you really have to wait years for it to drop in price enough to even get close to PC prices. I know I would not buy even 1/4 of the games I do now if I didn't get them so god damn cheap.

I get where console players are coming from here though. having a closed system = no competition. no competition means you most likely wont see sales or discounts as much if at all. so yes if I played console I would be fighting tooth and nail to keep physical disks around as long as possible because they give you no insensitive to buy digital. in fact its cons out weigh the pros by a long shot.

@Darkangel2154 @OhWell4992 In case you didn't know, your brother can log with your PSN account and download it. It's completely OK (not illegal or something). Then, he can play it even when he's logged in his own account. That can be done with 2 or 3 different ps3 consoles!
There's nothing like physical copies, but I had the same experience with ni no kuni. At least I was still able to give it to my friend!

@OhWell4992 i like #3 the most...it just seems odd when i look and see how my collection fades to almost nothing as you go from the nes era up to the 360/PS3 era due to all the downloaded games that would otherwise fill up some space on my shelves

Where is the cost of the cd taken off? I dont see any other content taking place of the cd, HD storage, and ability to sell. So online is ruined. For all those things the games should only cost $40-$50 at most.

Sony gets it right. Again.

I'm usually fond of digital-only in order to reduce carbon / water footprints of products' life cycles and reduce our need for resources (books are a great example) but, given the current technological limitations, there are tons of advantages for keeping physical games these days.

Just for starters: you get limited, expensive and often irreplaceable hard disks on certain consoles that will immediately hit their limits with bluray content; you get bandwidth limits that can make the whole download experience a nightmare; server-required games that will cease to exist once a company pulls the plug; no backwards compatibility that will ensure survival of your collections; at the moment, game sharing seems easier with physical copies in order to avoid "license" hazzles; you still got your product, regardless of a lost / banned / hacked account; and recently, our digital information is more than vulnerable to espionage and tracking than ever, and I don't want my customer habits to be used in any way.

So basically, you get a much lesser value for the same cost. Until we get the technological advances, matched by legal support for customers, and gaming companies oath of preserving our product's value (or commitment to reducing their price in a proportional level to reduced costs), physical seems just fine.

All digital future is disaster in the making. One hacker can erase everything you have or ever had on record (nothing is unhackable and it WILL happen one day). Worst of all is that you can't even sue the game company in such event. I'm sure its on the TOS somewhere. Physical copy for me!

@kenhu Wow, serious paranoia! Don't you think it's far more likely that your home burns down and you lose your entire collection over this one mysterious hacker who erases all Sony or MSs computers, including all traces of any backup ever made of their systems?

Digital is crap 1 it just looks better to have the case 2 takes up more room on harddrive 3 you can find solid copy much cheaper in stores then u would in the PSN store.. I have seen so many games on the store that are selling for 20 bucks and i ended up getting it for 10 bucks at EB games

One of the reasons the majority don't want to buy online right now is because they are not dumb idiots. If you buy digital right now, it's the exact same price as physical, sometimes more expensive. Makes absolutely no sense. Make me say "I'm going to buy digital because I get a better deal from day 1 and significant discounts later" and then you will see more and more people getting digital. Until then don't pretend these people are stupid.

@CombatIT @EdAl2112 Um, the game itself wouldnt have to be on physical media itself (DVD9 or Blu-Ray) nor packaged in a plastic case with a users manual. Those items arent free for a company. So releasing digitally saves them on cost of those items, so "logically" the games should be cheaper digitally.

@Zabu2 @CombatIT @darksidecelica @EdAl2112 How is it not worth mentioning? Sony and Microsoft aren't the ones making the games, what they receive for online fees by the consumer is irrelevant. Surely there is a fee just to have a game available for download through somebody else's internet service. Would they save money to go strictly or mostly with digital downloads? Probably, but as of right now, they're still spending the money for physical copies as well, so I don't see the prices dropping.

@CombatIT @darksidecelica @EdAl2112 About $15 out of the $60 retail priced games goes to the retailer (gamestop, bestbuy and the rest), $5 on physical costs (packaging, shipping, insurance and such) around $7 to licence provider (console maker), rest to Publisher.
So by going digital, they easily get rid of $20 cost, and providing the digital downloads cost is not worth mentioning specially as most people will be actually paying Sony and Microsoft monthly for the online privileges.
