Sony: Negative Xbox One response a "very useful source" for PS4

Shuhei Yoshida says backlash over Microsoft's policies helped inform decision making for PlayStation 4.

The backlash surrounding Microsoft's controversial (and since-reversed) DRM policies was a "very useful source" for Sony in its PlayStation 4 marketing planning, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said in the latest issue of Famitsu (via Polygon).

No Caption Provided

"There were lots of people who gave their opinions on that issue to my Twitter account before E3," Yoshida said. "It's not that our hardware policies are decided strictly based on user reaction like this, but when we were thinking about what we had to bring across and how to bring it across, it was a very useful source."

Sony capped of its E3 2013 briefing earlier this month by declaring that the PS4 would play used games without limitations and would not require an Internet connection. This announcement, from SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, drew a rousing applause at the time.

SCE Japan Asia president Hiroshi Kawano further explained in Famitsu that the response to the PS4 has been positive all round--from consumers to developers.

"As of now, I feel like we're getting a very positive response. For this system, we made a list of what people expected from us, debating over each point, with user feedback forming the main basis for the list," Kawano said. "The software makers are also telling us that they feel like they really make some fun stuff with it. A new platform always provides the basis for new forms of play, so I'd like to see it connect to a revitalization of the marketplace."

Kawano also addressed PS4 pricing for Japan, saying this information will come during a "full announcement" sometime in the future. Elsewhere around the world, the PS4 will retail for $399/€399/ £349.

Sony E3 press conference was a gut shot directly at Microsoft. Xbox One paved the way for PS4 for the beginning of this race. I think in the end, people will come around though. Plenty of Xbox One's will still sell.

@Snakepond1

the future msoft proposed was blatantly anti-consumer/gamer.

msoft has every right to pursue their vision of a multi-media future and offer the appropriate services.

imo, all msoft has to do is re-implement many of those policies in a more consumer-friendly manner. in fact, with digital options looming i give msoft a distinct advantage going forward. they simply need to pull their heads out of their arses and lighten their payroll appropriately.

for me, i care about single player gaming only and, therefore, i won't be supporting msoft's vision, unless, they make it worth my while with price and service.

however, i will continue to monitor both them and sony and see how this all plays out.

@udubdawgz I figured when you said, "they simply need to pull their heads out of their arses and lighten their payroll appropriately." I thought you meant to properly explain their vision. My bad.

Yep, and you guys buried them.

Now, launch an aggressive Sega style ad campaign, and make their policy changes moot.

@Imperiacommando 2-3 years? Might be a little optimistic, there. Still, consoles are optimized for gaming the way PCs tend not to be. Also, it costs less to get a console to game with for a couple of years than it does to get a gaming PC of any decent quality. Consoles are just simpler. I'd rather just throw down a few hundred dollars every few years and game without worrying about viruses, Steam, and hardware upgrades.

@Snakepond1 Microsoft tried to turn the Xbox One into the console equivalent of Steam. They gave nothing to the consumer, and sold our loss of ownership as the future and said "deal with it." Take of the green-tinted goggles. Personally, I don't care what games the Xbox One has, if I can't actually own them, and play them after support is cut for the console.

Oh wait... nevermind. Microsoft did a 180. Now they've decided to 'cave into whatever the gamers wanted' like Sony did. I guess Microsoft didn't even support their own ideology as much as you do.

@Haeravon @Snakepond1 They tried and failed because they didn't have any of the benefits of Steam (or at least they didn't communicate them properly.) Sales are what keep me coming back to Steam. But Steam isn't my ONLY option and that is really where the difference is. With the Xbox One, it would be the equivalent of only having Steam available to buy games on. And where would Steam be without the rest of the market to compete with?

@Snakepond1 My bets are on Sony. I'm normally not superstitious but I'm pretty sure Microsoft is going to suffer from the "third console curse", just as every other company has. Sega with its Saturn, Nintendo with its N64, and Sony with its Playstation 3. Those consoles caused financial hardship for their respective companies, it's only a matter of time that Microsoft has the same fate with the One. It's how they deal with the aftermath that will determine if their success in the follow generation.

@Imperiacommando Why do people still compare console vs. PC, which is not possible, because the console is build to be a console, with everything on one board and the way it handles operations.

Here's my version of the interview: "Those complete idiots at Microsoft listened to our imbedded moles, and implemented Sony's strategy designed to make the xbox one the most anti-gamer device ever created."

@udubdawgz @onixevil Yeah, I did the same with Playstation 4 in both... Bing finds nothing (no surprise there), and google talks about when it is coming out.

@raahsnavj @udubdawgz @onixevil there is a reason why ms spends millions to advertise bing as the best search engine... because it clearly is not. i mean a search that finds nothing? clever ms if you wish it away it may just go away...

@Imperiacommando You said that an optimized console should be around $600-$700 but you also say the PS4 isn't optimized and is "medium" in PC standards. So why is the $399 for a "medium" powered PC bad?

Sure when devs start finding loop holes to push the new system to its limit you will see some visually stunning stuff. I am glad they have opted for this price point. And I dissagree with the " standard PC"

@leviathanwing It was also funny when you searched bing for Xbox One and the majority of results were of the original Xbox, and when using Google the majority was of the new Xbox.

@Kristhomas123 Camera-required games are a niche, and will always be a niche, until virtual reality becomes a, ahem, reality. All the cameras nowadays are far from being virtual reality. Therefore, it is completely unnecessary to include a camera for all SKUs. If XBone had required all games to use the camera, then it would be a huge step towards expanding that niche, but it might also backfire. In any case, I prefer to have the option to buy the camera.
