Sony showing EverQuest Next this week

Company will debut upcoming MMORPG on August 2 during SOE Live event.

Sony Online Entertainment will reveal first details on EverQuest Next at SOE Live on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. PDT, the company announced through the event's website.

No Caption Provided

The August 2 debut event will be hosted by SOE president John Smedley, development director Dave Georgeson, and other members of the production team.

The EverQuest Next event will last 90 minutes and will be streamed through the SOE Twitch channel.

EverQuest Next was announced in 2010 during SOE's Fan Faire, now known as SOE Live.

Unlike 2004's EverQuest II, the new title will not be a continuation of the events that began in the 12-year-old original. Instead, the studio is positioning EverQuest Next as a "reimagining of the EverQuest universe," one that will have "familiar faces, races, and places" but operate as an alternate dimension and with a "clean slate."

"Our task now is to take the game and evolve it and make it into something new for today's fans. And I would liken that to the brilliant job J.J. Abrams did with Star Trek…the reimagining of it," Smedley said in 2011. "That's what we're doing, and we've got some cool new things in store for players with the next one."

I remember training general Sathir in Karnor's castle to the entrance with my bard while my Shadow knight friend trained Veltar to the entrance in the dread lands ( if my zone memory is correct). We caused 100's of deaths because people who died inside were bound outside and those who tried to escape the general by zoning got ganked by Veltar outside. Many levels and xp was lost and those who afk'd outside and were bound lost a crap ton of levels. Training was insane.. Especially since my wife made a business of logging on and rezzing when there were no clerics around. She made tons of plat. Wait remember training Spec island? Haha

@ScreamDream @Sundayz

I have been looking forward to this game ever since its development was first hinted at back in 2009. Many discussions have taken place among my friends over the years as to what we hope Next will be like. For more then a decade I have been searching with constant disappointment for the same experience that we all had back in the early days of EQ. I could go on and on why no mmorpg has ever compared to the original EQ but I will try to stick to why I made my comment.

It really comes down to satisfaction and the fact that so much of today's society wants instant gratification. I'm so sick and tired of this pansy hand holding experience that a third grader can fumble his way through to max level in a couple of weeks. I hope that the leveling is on par with the original EQ or more difficult and give me hell levels that make me question if I'll will ever get through it. I'm talking months of everyday play or a year of casual play to reach max level. It has to be difficult or where does any satisfaction come from. Then add AA points or something similar so that your character never stops growing. That way no two characters can really ever be the same. Which leads me to the next point about loot. While I do hope that loot is done slightly different then the original EQ going to a WOW armor set model is definitely not the answer. I have gone back to WOW a couple times since my original WOW experience and it has taken me around a month to catch back up and have the same loot as almost everyone else. WOW at least has decent raiding content so you can separate yourself slightly from the masses with the latest tier of loot but you can pvp to get basically the same thing and both are obsolete within a few months. (Side note on raiding; Give me the ability to mass 80 people together and stand toe to toe with a god to get loot that few if any have ever seen before. Also if you are lucky enough to get loot off a mob that took 80 people to kill you shouldn't be able to get a random drop off a trash mob in the next expansion that's better, what was the point then?) IMO loot drops should rarely ever be the same and not primarily set up in a tier set structure. In today's age of programming we have the ability to put an element of randomness into just about everything. Let's use a low level item as an example say a stone mace, well that mace only drops 1 in 100 times and when generated can have 5 different graphics, 5 different levels of durability, 5 different levels of use requirements and 20 different variations of stats. If every item in the game was set up in a similar fashion it would be rare to see two people using the same items. If they are going to model anything after WOW take a page from their PVP book, then a page from Aion's and Warhammer's PVP and mix them together into something epic.

A few off topic random thoughts:

-95% of the content should not contain instancing.

-Competition for mobs is realistic and important.

-Bring back the grind and promote group play rather then solo play.

-Quests should focused around getting items not XP.

-It should be almost impossible to craft the top tear gear.

-No two top tier crafted pieces should ever be the same.

-Randomize just about everything.

-Make maps and mapping more realistic, I want to feel lost in an area until I get to know it.

-Most importantly DIEING SHOULD SUCK...

I really hope Sony's main goal with this game is to make an alternate universe, a place that seems like your stepping into another realm an alternate life if you will and life is not easy, life is not fair and no two peoples life is the same. Obviously they are making this game to make money but if that's their primary goal then we are going to end up with WOW2.

My greatest fear is that no game will ever stack up to original EQ again because I'm chasing a point in time rather then a actual new game but please Sony prove my fears wrong...

I am personally looking forward to this game a lot. I'm hoping the reveal friday is not a let down. I played the original one for almost 5 years before I finally took a break/quit. Of all the MMO's I've played since then which is a lot I don't think any game has had a community quite as good as the original EQ. Of course that's probably largely in part because there was no quest really and you just sat in the same spot a lot of the time grinding mobs so you actually had to get to know people instead of all the random crap like there is in today's MMO worlds.

I do hope all the old EQ veterans don't expect the same atmosphere from this new one though. 99% of gamers these days would not have the patience to sit there and grind in the same area. Most people now a days want instant gratification and don't want to have to work for stuff. Nothing will ever being back memories quite like I 18 hour Plane of Growth raid or a 12 hour Rathe Council fight.

That's what ruined the genre. The instant gratification losers. That's why they should stick to mobile gaming. The last fun hard game I played was demon souls/dark souls.

@Greyslay I loved EQ1 too, and I've never had as much fun in any MMO I've played since, but I think you're romanticizing the endless grinding (and fighting other groups for the choice spots) and the interminable waiting for spawns, etc.

The thing that made EQ1 great was you realistically HAD to group and you HAD to be in good standing with a guild, thus you HAD to be nice to other people, and you made friends. The over-emphasis on soloability is what detracts from the MMO's that came after - it brings out the asshat in a lot of people.

I had a question for Everquest veterans. I never played the first game and have a tendency of going back to the source and then coming into the present in order to amass experience. Is there anyway to play the first one? There's been a lot of good MMORPGs that I never got a chance to play. Asheron's Call, Shadowbane, Ultima Online. Such a damn waste.

They dumbed down the original EQ to be more like wow I heard. Now you can rent party members instead of actually grouping with people.

@TheEveryMan IF you can appreciate it for what it is... graphics wise the gameplay and core mechanics are all still there.. I would say go for it! Ultima Online was a great game, I recommend, along with Everquest and their 101 expansions... prob some of the best times of my life spent playing those games with friends.. :D

Thanks for the message dude, but you're going to have to point me in the right direction first. Do you still play it from time to time? Shadowbane is one I would like to dabble in.

@TheEveryMan You do know the the first one is still up and running, right? However, if you want the original experience you could try one of the emulators like Project 1999.

@TheEveryMan http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2651

it's a bit of a pain to set up the first time. If you play, don't be surprised that upon entering the world, beyond having to move toolbars and such around, you will have no idea what to do. The game does not hold your hand, which is what made it great.

Although I'm tired of the MMO genre, I greatly enjoyed the original game for years.

I know a ton of people make bold claims on the internet - but back in the EQ days I was with a guild whom housed what would eventually be the original creators of world of warcraft. They were something else, having made an automated news feed that blew my mind. (years before google news)

It was only years later, during a guild funded skiing trip did I learn exactly how the entire EQ guild I was in had closed beta access to WoW.

Kinda off topic, but it's the only "famous" people I've ever met!~

IF they want $1.00 dollar from me they need

1. More than 2 PLAYABLE Factions.

2. in game time fixed to a ratio of real time 1 hour real time = 20 minutes and events continue to unfold as time goes by.

3. A complex story, and not 1 bad boss after another.

4. Complex A.I. to interact with, and take on quest.
