Sony showing EverQuest Next this week

Company will debut upcoming MMORPG on August 2 during SOE Live event.

Sony Online Entertainment will reveal first details on EverQuest Next at SOE Live on Friday beginning at 12 p.m. PDT, the company announced through the event's website.

The August 2 debut event will be hosted by SOE president John Smedley, development director Dave Georgeson, and other members of the production team.

The EverQuest Next event will last 90 minutes and will be streamed through the SOE Twitch channel.

EverQuest Next was announced in 2010 during SOE's Fan Faire, now known as SOE Live.

Unlike 2004's EverQuest II, the new title will not be a continuation of the events that began in the 12-year-old original. Instead, the studio is positioning EverQuest Next as a "reimagining of the EverQuest universe," one that will have "familiar faces, races, and places" but operate as an alternate dimension and with a "clean slate."

"Our task now is to take the game and evolve it and make it into something new for today's fans. And I would liken that to the brilliant job J.J. Abrams did with Star Trek…the reimagining of it," Smedley said in 2011. "That's what we're doing, and we've got some cool new things in store for players with the next one."

So, to all of the Sony fanboys that trolled on all of the X1 articles: "I can't wait till it comes to X1! Because this isn't going to stay on PS4." Just kidding. But seriously, I'm really happy with MMO's coming to consoles. I really hope an MMO revolution happens really soon where we can see ultra powerful games with intense character creation. Either way, this has a lot of promise.

@Oozyrat The only problem with console MMOs is the fact that the current "skill bar" style of powers doesn't really work very well with a controller. Typically it has to be a more beat 'em up-style MMO.

@Scarab83 @Oozyrat PS4 version might support a mouse and keyboard. FFXIV: ARR on PS3 does.

I'm very interested to see exactly what a "sandbox MMO" plays like.

@snugglebear Then go play EVE Online, or Second Life. "Sandbox MMO" isn't exactly a new concept. :)

I loved how grouping was basically required in the original game. The second game was ok but there were way too many classes that seemed to do very similar things. If they can recapture what made the original Everquest great I will be playing that for a long time.

I have tried going back to EQ or EQ2 a couple times but once so many years have passed it is really hard to get back into a game when you are soo far behind everyone. It will be awesome to start fresh.
