Sony Unveils PS5 Logo, And It's Not Surprising

Behold, the PlayStation 5 logo from CES.

Sony's CES 2020 briefing brought with it some PlayStation 5 news, though it wasn't much. Sony's Jim Ryan appeared on stage to share some impressive stats regarding the PS4 and to reveal the PlayStation 5 logo. Here it is:

Ryan also spoke briefly about some of the features of the PlayStation 5, including 3D audio sound, adaptive triggers for the new controller, a faster SSD to improve loading times, as well as ray-tracing and an Ultra HD blu-ray drive. All of these features were already announced.

Now Playing: PS5 Logo Revealed During Sony's CES Briefing - GS News Update

Ryan concluded his segment by saying further specifics about the PlayStation 5, including the game lineup and other features, will be announced at a later date.

If history is any indication, Sony may share more PlayStation 5 news soon. As you may remember, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 4 back in February 2013, one month after CES that year.

The PlayStation 5 launches in Holiday 2020 alongside Microsoft's own next-generation console, Xbox Series X. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Beyond the brief amount of PS5 talk, Ryan also shared some facts regarding the performance of Sony's current-gen console, including that it's now sold 106 million PS4s worldwide.

I’ve been coming to game spot for 20 years now I’ve owned every single system you can about imagine. I’m 33 years old now and I I realized at least for me that video games do not give me true joy. They give a person pleasure like a drug but not true joy. Life is too short we were not created by God to get the highest score on some Xbox game or a PlayStation game. Please everyone start reading your Bible’s and start praying.

I don't get what the problem is with this logo... it's good business sense to have consistent branding. I have to confess, I never thought about or cared what it would look like, but the fact that it's instantly recognizable as PS seems like a no brainer.

People will complain about anything

Why is the logo such a big deal?

Never once did I look at something and said: "Hmmm, Nice Logo. I think I'll buy it."

The logo could be a velvet painting of a dolphin and a whale getting it on for all i care.

@tlpina: A lot of consumer decisions are made on basis of marketing / branding and that includes the logo. Unconsciously or consciously whether you like the look of something or not is going to influence your decision. Sony made a safe bet with this logo, its consistent with previous PS designs. But I suppose these days people will always have to complain about something, especially no the internet.

@skippert: I think the complaints stem from there not being anything else to talk about. This is the most recent PS5 news so people are going to share their opinions and, inevitably, when people share their opinions about any topic there is going to be criticism. Like you said people will always find something to complain about.

at first I thought, why not PSV? (V as in the roman 5) especially since the developer's kit literally makes a V, but then I remember the PS Vita or...well PSV for sort, so yes, it makes sense they logo is PS5, in the end I'm more curious about the actual look of the new console that just a logo

At this point all that matters is the price. It will be the make it or break it for M$ and Sony.

@ahpuck: And the specs... I guess both vendors would really like to know the exact specs of the competition, so they could be at the same or preferably a higher spec: Not being the original Xbox One of the next generation, where everything looks and runs slightly better on the competition.

It's simplistic but obviously works. They could have made the 5 like a shadow / reflection from the "S" just like the Playstation logo, but it might look a bit bunched up. Some colour would have been nice; a sky blue 5 maybe :)

Well that was earth-shattering. The only thing that matters to me is backwards compatibility. If it's not backwards compatible, I'm done with consoles.

@barnold81: everything seems to indicate that it will at least be backwards compatible with PS4 games but there are rumors of full bc with all generations of PlayStation.

@sparent180: Considering what PC based emulators have been doing for so long, it should be easy to build in really good upscaling emulators for the PS1 and PS2. Even some PS3 games can be emulated now.

It would be really cool if they also emulated PSP and PS vita games. I never got the PS vita because the console with memory cards were way too expensive.

What a let-down. I mean, I get their simple naming scheme - it works, so why change it. Seriously though... this boring ass #ffffff white version of the logo has run it's course. Let it die. Even a return to the original would be an improvement.

@skyhighgam3r: ehh what's it matter? No matter what it looks like it's going to be the same two letters followed by a 5 and no one is going to make a purchase based on a logo.

@sparent180: lol I'm not saying I'm concerned this will be a damper on their marketing strategy hahaha. I'm talking about the design, specifically and unrelated to anything other than design; purely for design's sake. The white logo is just dull, and doesn't evoke anything.

If you compare it to the original (while I'm not saying it's the only thing they could/should have done) it's use of all 4 primary colors was brilliant, but more so is that it's the slightly off-colors that are iconic to the brand from being tied to the Cross, Circle, Square, and Triangle buttons.

You also lose the psuedo-3D effect with this empty husk... which, granted more so with the PSX, was an extremely important part of the logo. This thing though... I get trying out a minimalist approach but it just doesn't work on any level than "minimalism", which is hardly a word I'd use to describe anything PlayStation does.

That original is easily one of the most well designed logos in history, and it's a shame to feel like in that regard they peaked back in 1994 lol Maybe that guy's no longer with PlayStation though, I'm not sure. I know the orchestral boot-ups aren't handled by the same guy anymore (and it shows) - so why not this.
