Sony Unveils PS5 Logo, And It's Not Surprising

Behold, the PlayStation 5 logo from CES.

Sony's CES 2020 briefing brought with it some PlayStation 5 news, though it wasn't much. Sony's Jim Ryan appeared on stage to share some impressive stats regarding the PS4 and to reveal the PlayStation 5 logo. Here it is:

Ryan also spoke briefly about some of the features of the PlayStation 5, including 3D audio sound, adaptive triggers for the new controller, a faster SSD to improve loading times, as well as ray-tracing and an Ultra HD blu-ray drive. All of these features were already announced.

Ryan concluded his segment by saying further specifics about the PlayStation 5, including the game lineup and other features, will be announced at a later date.

If history is any indication, Sony may share more PlayStation 5 news soon. As you may remember, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 4 back in February 2013, one month after CES that year.

The PlayStation 5 launches in Holiday 2020 alongside Microsoft's own next-generation console, Xbox Series X. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Beyond the brief amount of PS5 talk, Ryan also shared some facts regarding the performance of Sony's current-gen console, including that it's now sold 106 million PS4s worldwide.

Can someone please tell me what "Ultra HD Blu-Ray" means? Does it support 4K movies?

@v1ndictive: UHD Blu-ray just means that it has a drive which recognises those discs. UHD Blu-ray is capable of storing up to 100 GB (triple layer) with a resolution of 3840x2160 at 60fps as opposed to standard Blu-ray which can only display up to 1920x1080 at 60fps and store 50gb (dual layer).

I understand that standard Blu-ray discs were made that have up to 6 layers and thus store in excess of 100gb the costs of producing said disc were somewhat prohibitive compared to UHD Blu-ray.

@v1ndictive: Nobody has answered that question yet, so I'll do that for you. Ultra HD Blu-Ray drive means, that you'll be able to watch 4K movies from discs. Great shlt for film collectors, man. You can watch such movies on your PC, but you'll need BR drive that supports high capacity discs (50 GB+) e.g. Pioneer BDR-209 EBK.

You're welcome.

@v1ndictive: Just 4 layer blurays for 4K movies. Normal blurays have 2 layers and can hold up to 50GB. These should be able to have 100GB per disc.

@v1ndictive: Ultra HD Blurays are disks that support 4k native resolution. That's all.

@v1ndictive: “Ultra UHD” means it it doesn’t only support 4K but also more important features like HDR etc.

@tingtong: UHD has nothing to do with HDR, nor any other feature. Also, "Ultra UHD" is incorrect if not redundant.

UHD is related to the Resolution of the panel. Nothing else.

UHD covers 4k up to 8k and with the advent of the latter, manufacturers are now specifying the resolution next to the acronym.

Most TVs now come with drescriptions like UHD-4K or UHD-8K (5K is used on monitors only)

@tlpina:

There’s a lot of early adopters out there with only basic 4K TVs w/out the HDR, Dolby Vision etc…and even more ppl that are generally ignorant on the subject (I’m no expert either; only did just enough research to make the right purchase for a somewhat “future proof” TV, even though such a thing doesn’t exist at the rate they pump them out each year.. but I wanted to make sure it at least supports all the current formats so I didn’t feel left out.

I just wanted them to know there’s more meaning behind all this stuff than just resolution and what’s compatible which can be confusing for some… But I think what I meant to say is that HDR is included in the Ultra HD spec (whatever you wanna call it). Thanks for the more accurate description though.

Exactly the design you'd expect. They really are the most conservative manufacturer.

Just looks like a rounded version of the PS2 font/logo.

Teasers like these (I assume that's what this stunt is) don't cut the mustard nowadays. C'mon Sony, bring on the reveal already.

@5tu88sy: Calling it the PSV would have earned it the nickname "Eindhoven". 😄

2020 is gonna’ be a drain on gamers wallets.

Will be interesting to see the eventual price points both Sony and Microsoft reveal this next gen hardware at. I hope both learned well from last gens’ unveils. A solid price point could be the difference between 1st and 2nd place by a huge margin.

No need to reinvent the wheel. Nothing clunky like "Play Station Experience Fusion System Microbe!"

I've long been an investor in Microsoft. I love PS, but I don't love Sony as a company, but looking at their P/E last week it was 11.5. That's low. Cheap. And so I invested. I'm literally betting on the PS5. It's a hedge anyway since their main competitor I already have money in.

But I really think they're gonna nail this one. We'll see.

@dmblum1799: except gaming only amounts to 25% of Sonys total revenue so your not really betting on the PS5. Same with Microsoft. Their big revenue source now is i believe their cloud infrastructure.
