Spot On: Microsoft's Tokyo JRPG event

Namco Bandai and Square Enix show off the next wave of Japanese RPGs for the Xbox 360, including Tales of Vesperia, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

TOKYO--Though the Xbox 360 hasn't sold well in Japan, Microsoft has once again announced a new wave of role-playing games developed by some of the island nation's biggest names. During an event today in Tokyo, Microsoft updated the press with news on its latest JPRGs, which will follow in the footsteps of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.

After opening remarks from Xbox Japan general manager Takashi Sensui, Namco Bandai Games producers Tsutomu Gouda and Yoshito Higuchi appeared on stage to make announcements regarding Tales of Vesperia. The game is now officially dated for Japan on August 7, priced at ¥7,800 ($73). The Vesperia series will make its way to North America in August as well, with an Asian release slated for sometime this summer. However, European gamers will have to wait until sometime next year before experiencing the Tales series for the first time on Microsoft's console.

Tales of Vesperia's opening sequence was shown for the first time during the press conference, and it featured full animation drawn by Studio IG. The producers also played a real-time demonstration that showed the game's hallmark anime-style graphics, which were displayed with sharper character outlines thanks to the 360's high-definition capabilities. A demo of the game will be released on Japan's Xbox Live Marketplace in June.

In Japan, Namco Bandai will be launching a variety of tie-ins to accompany the launch of Tales of Vesperia. The game's soundtrack is slated to hit on August 20, and Namco Bandai will also honor the occasion by debuting a monthly magazine dedicated to the Tales franchise, Tales of Magazine. The first issue will hit alongside the game's launch, and the second issue will arrive on October 10. Namco Bandai expects additional issues to arrive on the 10th of every month thereafter.

To accompany the game's launch, Microsoft in Japan also plans on offering a special Tales of Vesperia hardware bundle that will retail for ¥37,800 ($352). In addition to an Xbox 360 console, the bundle includes: Tales of Vesperia, a copy of the game's dialogue script, an original faceplate, and a special DVD. Those who preorder the game will also receive the same DVD as the one in the bundle.

Following Namco Bandai, Microsoft Game Studios' Fumihiro Yamauchi appeared on stage to announce that Fable 2 and Mass Effect will be released in Japan for the Xbox 360. Fable 2 will be released in Japan this year, whereas Mass Effect has not yet been dated.

The biggest announcement at today's conference came from Square Enix producer Yoshinori Yamagishi. Yamagishi took the stage to announce that Star Ocean 4, officially titled Star Ocean: The Last Hope, will be released on the Xbox 360 in 2009. Similar to previous installments, the game is being developed by Tri-Ace. Only trailers were shown at the conference, but producer Yamagishi commented that Star Ocean 4's development is well underway and, in fact, is already at a playable stage.

Star Ocean 4 will be a prequel to the Star Ocean series. The game takes place in the year S.D. 10, not too long after 2064 A.D. when the civilized world is annihilated as a result of World War III. The game will explain how the Star Ocean universe came about when humanity voyaged into the ocean of stars to search for a new place to live. According to Yamagishi, the game will be more sci-fi oriented than previous installments, and reflects inspiration drawn from American films and shows in the genre such as Star Trek.

When asked later at a roundtable interview whether the game will be an Xbox exclusive, Yamagishi commented, "We can't really say anything yet. Will it be coming out in the PS3 as well? The answer to that is that there's really nothing set at the moment. We can't say right now that it will or won't come out. It could go either way. The only thing that we can confirm right now is that it's coming out first on the Xbox 360." Yamagishi noted that one of the primary reasons for the game being a 360 exclusive was that Microsoft's development platform was available significantly before that of the PS3.

Following the Star Ocean 4 reveal, Square Enix producer Hajime Kojima appeared on the stage to announce that Infinite Undiscovery will be released almost simultaneously worldwide. The game will be shipped in North America on September 2, in Europe on September 5, and in Japan and Asia on September 11.

Infinite Undiscovery is developed by Tri-Ace and plays as an action RPG with seamless shifting between the field and battle modes. Kojima ran a real-time demonstration of an early part of the game and showed off one of the game's main concepts, which is called the Situation Battle. Taking advantage of the environment is essential in Infinite Undiscovery, and the player will be required to respond to the situation at hand, which sometimes changes in real time. In one demo, the player was seen being chased by a dragon; as the dragon breathed fire, some of the rubble on the ground broke away, allowing for the player to strategically flee ahead.

Closing out the event was Square Enix's Last Remnant. The game's producer, Nobuyuki Ueda, appeared on the stage to announce that the multiplatform game will be released on the Xbox 360 first, with a simultaneous release slated for Japan, North America, and Europe this winter. Further details on the game will be unveiled at the E3 Media & Business Summit and Tokyo Game Show later this year.

"ColonelGuile @ Guts5 True, but sales for 360's in Japan are horrible. And from every gamer I talk to in Japan (I have many friends over there in that wonderful country - lol), they either have a Wii or a PS3. And yet again, 360 is at the bottom following PS3 and the Wii. From what I can evaluate, Japanese gamers care not for the 360... but that can change in a few years, maybe..." So, true. I agree with you 100%. I'm not so sure things will change in the future though, as far as Japan buying anything game related not being made in Japan.

I usually don't try to make it personal but you need to get a clue. What does MS win by offering a game to an almost non-existant audience, besides pissing the small niche fanbase that bought a DS or PS3 for those kind of titles? Star Ocean games barely sell on Japanese systems.

I have to agree, the 360 is the better console to invest in at the moment. The PS3 has potential, but hasn't yet met, or surpassed it. Only time will tell.

"PS_Family Japan is going to dislike MS even more after this. It's pretty sad that people in this site applaud MS's tactics of putting money into devs throats to cripple the competition." Uh Nintendo is doing just fine. MS resisted the urge to try and throw in motion sensitive controllers to mimic the wii mote. Sony on the other hand... removing rumble to try and copy the wii... then putting it back in ANOTHER controller that PS3 owners have to buy if they want rumble. So, they removed the option for game developers to have rumble in their games... then gave it back later. Ya think that irritated devs? You think that was fair of Sony to remove a standard controller feature from it's original PS3 controller? All MS has done is help have the easiest dev kit for developers, provide technical expertise when asked, Sakaguchi got help for istance, done their best to make sure that 360 owners get the most bang for their buck with titles. The only person that would even try and look at any of that in a negative light... is someone dedicated to Sony and only Sony.

@PS_Family Then the Japanese are stupid. If they would blindly hate on a company that goes out of it's way to bring quality games in every genre to their customers, then they are ignorant and stubborn. I have a PS3 and a 360. Personally I find that I am attracted to the 360 game line up WAY more than the PS3 line up. One big reason for that is the amount of money and effort MS puts out to bring great games to their console.

PS_Family, Sony loyalists have to give it a rest, last generation all we kept hearing was that Xbox did not offer enough games that appeal to the Japanese marketplace. Now that they have gone and tried to address this they are "crippling the competition"...Give me a break. PS2 was my RPG headquarters last generation, now Sony seems to be more interested in using the PS3 to push a movie format in Blu-Ray then it is in releasing games. Its been more then a year and a half and not one exclusive JRPG style game for the PS3? How long are we suppose to stay loyal to Sony when they don't care about us?

Most game companies release next-gen titles in all regions close in date. There's no more 6-12 month gaps for popular titles. Even if Europe were to receive FFXIII last, European gamers could just import the US version with ease since PS3 games aren't region locked.

You mean if FFX13 is every released, and once it is it will be another years wait until we see it in North America and probably at least that long, if not longer, for Europe.

Oy. In case everyone didn't know. SE has released demos of all three games on the live. I downloaded all 3 last night. All three look pretty freaking cool. I must say Last Remnant has an edge to me though, the story looks freaking awesome. Download em and check em out!

I am hoping Infinite Undiscovery is better than Radiata stories and star ocean 3(both made by Tri-Ace) because I just couldn't get into those games. But I did like Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 though and I am willing to give Star Ocean 4 a try.

"ColonelGuile Even with all of these games coming out for 360, I would like to see them best FF13 in sales when it is released for the PS3." They probably won't for one simple reason. The 360 owners have a lot of choices to choose from when it comes to jrpgs. So, if a game doesn't exactly look like the kind of jrpg they want to play, they will choose one that does. So, 360 jrpg fans will spread their spending out amongst the titles because they have that option.

"Kenji_Masamune wonder how much M$ had to shell out to secure all these timed/exclusive releases. They did fund Mistwalker Studios to try and crack the jrpg market. Come to think of it.. M$ isn't to bright when it comes to marketing. They did buy RARE way back in the day for LOTS of money.. wonder if they ever plan on making a profit at some point and time." Actually, MS went in the black at the start of 2007. They've been making money ever since... Unlike the PS3. Which has been getting major pressure from parent Sony demanding the show a profit. By forcing them to pull programmers off other projects to hurry up games out the door that are closer to completion. Gamespot reported that just a little while back. They could have gave them more funding to just hire more and keep all projects going, but they refused.

whats with people saying the 360 is only for fps, the ps3 is going to get killzone 2 and resistance 2, those are going to be the best shooters in the next year from now, i know gears 2 will be really good but still, the 360 has way better and more rpgs than the playstation, 360 has and is getting, lost Odyssey, blue dragon, fable 2, sacred 2, mass effect, too human, infinite undiscovery, the playstation has what for exclusives, final fantasy 13, and clouds not in it i dont think, inform me if im wrong. and i thought lost odyssey was really good, gamespot underates

Oh God, why does this site have so many stupid fanboys. Xbox 360 has Final Fantasy XI, a bad game in the seires but it's still a Final Fantasy. When Nintendo ****ed up FFVII by sticking with cartridges for N64, who was the one that welcomed Square and gave them an opportunity to create the game with more space? Sony, that's who. The Chrono licence is owned by 3 different people, 2 of them DON'T work for Square anymore. It has nothing to do with Sony or Nintendo. The reason FFXIII will never be on 360 is SE themselves said they want to treat all 3 consoles evenly. Name 1 SE title that been released on PS3 so far.

@ ShadoweaverCode Okay, I did what you said and yes... there is an obvious downward trend for the PS3 from the beginning of the year as well as the X360. Now, since 05/11/08, the PS3 has continued to have a downward trend while the X360 has leveled off. You have a valid point there. As far as my agreement with Darkride on the comment "It's leading the sales race currently worldwide, selling faster than the 360 ever did", I was considering cumulative sales world wide trends, which (if they continue and yes, that's a big "if") then it appears the PS3 will overtake the X360. So, maybe I was too quick to agree with that statement. It is obviously NOT selling more world wide currently and in fact the PS3 has continued to fall of since 05/11/08 while the X360 has leveled off. Thanks for the reply ShadoweaverCode!

"devilmaycry2020 I wonder how this will affect sales in japan?" It won't and I'll be happy when it doesn't. It'll add that much more proof that they have an extreme bias towards non-Japanese products. Their old excuse for not buying the XBOX was it was black, too big, and didn't have any jrpgs... Now guess what the PS3 is black, same size, and no jrpgs... This will finally be an end to their excuses and leave us with the truth of their bias. The other part to this is that they don't care about advanced games in the first place. They are mobile gamers primarily. A little over 2 mil PS3 have sold there. Developers have noticed this and have come home to the 360 for the most part. The USA is the number one purchasers of the next gen systems. That's also why these developers have finally started releasing games here at the same time.

"enoslives7 too little too late....anybody who loves RPGs already has a Playstation.....the xbox is strictly for FPS games" Uh PS2 has no RPGs. Considering D&D and the other table top games were created here in the west. Yes, we get claim to being the creators of RPGS. The PS2 only had jrpgs. PS3 has none of both. That's still terrible too little... PS3 having none is some how More than all the 360 titles. LOL

Nineball2112 - I unclicked Cumulative Sales for a reason. If you click it, it's going to give you a graph of the total amount of consoles sold to date, during the periods you specified. That's not what we are talking about, we are talking about currently selling more or less. So if you unclick Cumulative Sales, you will get a graph that will show you ONLY the sales data from the Start to End date. It's basically the same information as Cumulative Sales, it's just a lot easier to see. Which leads me to wonder how you came up with this.. "Which means that Darkride is correct when he posts: "It's leading the sales race currently worldwide, selling faster than the 360 ever did." With cumulative sales enabled, Xbox 360 still has more total units sold worldwide so those lines would look very similiar, Xbox's would just be higher. Just take cumulative sales off and you'll see what I'm talking about.

guenter_26 says: darkride66 MS wouldnt replace defective with defective that is bad business and they couldve been sued and would lose a lot of support. The PS3 and 360 are selling at about the same pace(there have been articles about the monthly sales of hardware and such in fact there is one for may on GS right now) and apparently 360 has about 19-20 million sold and the PS3 13 million so it look like the 360 is doing better worldwide, and the Wii out sells the PS3 by 12 million but 360 is only being outsold 5-6 million by the Wii so if the PS3 is so good how come the Wii is outselling it by twice the amount of the 360 is being outsold. hmm if ps3 has sold 13 million, in about 1 and half and 360 sold 19 million in 2 and half years. in another yeah ps3 could outsell it, so hmm.

ShadoweaverCode posted: "I was just proving this point invalid last week... here's a link to your beloved vgchartz that shows proof that worldwide, the PS3 WAS outselling the 360, however that is not true anymore. This chart is from January 08 to current for worldwide sales. As you can see PS3 has been declining recently, and 360 rising. Last time I posted this link the lines wouldn't autopopulate.. hopefully that's fixed now. << LINK REMOVED >>®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39474&end=39607\ EDIT: Yea the lines still aren't populating, just fill in the fields at the top next to the "All" boxes." Well, I went to the chart you provided. I used the dates you said to use, and I clicked on Cumulative Sales. At the beginning of the chart, this is what I saw 01/06/08: X360 = 16.072,763 PS3 = 9,176,849 Difference = 6,895,914 06/08/08 X360 = 19,124,747 PS3 = 13,246,076 Difference = 5,878,671 Now, am I looking at this wrong or is the difference between X360 and PS3 declining? Which means that Darkride is correct when he posts: "It's leading the sales race currently worldwide, selling faster than the 360 ever did." Regardless.... major props to Microsoft for a slick business strategy on trying to get the market on RPGs and JRPGs. This very well could boost their hardware sales all over the world.

Jesus fanboys don't fight over it, the 360 obviously has more games and is cheaper although its more likely to break than the PS3 that's all there it is to it. If you weren't a fanboy of any console you'd more than likely get a 360 over a PS3 and this is coming from someone who owned a PS2 last gen, it's just the smarter choice, I don't even understand why people fight about it.

darkride66 - "Also, how is the PS3 doing horrible? It's leading the sales race currently worldwide, selling faster than the 360 ever did. What's the problem?" I was just proving this point invalid last week... here's a link to your beloved vgchartz that shows proof that worldwide, the PS3 WAS outselling the 360, however that is not true anymore. This chart is from January 08 to current for worldwide sales. As you can see PS3 has been declining recently, and 360 rising. Last time I posted this link the lines wouldn't autopopulate.. hopefully that's fixed now. << LINK REMOVED >>\ EDIT: Yea the lines still aren't populating, just fill in the fields at the top next to the "All" boxes.

darkride66 MS wouldnt replace defective with defective that is bad business and they couldve been sued and would lose a lot of support.
