Square Enix orders Supreme Commander 2

Japanese role-playing publisher partners with Gas Powered Games on sequel to epic-scale real-time strategy game.

Last month, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada appeared on a Tokyo Game Show panel about the waning influence of Japanese game makers. He said Japan was no longer the leader in the worldwide gaming industry, having lost too much ground to rising markets in the US and Europe.

If Wada can't lead them, he'll apparently join them. Square Enix today announced a strategic partnership with Gas Powered Games that will see the creation of a sequel to the Redmond, Washington-based studio's large-scale real-time strategy game Supreme Commander. Square Enix didn't specify what its role in the game's creation would be, nor did it reveal any details on platforms, release windows, or gameplay features.

Square Enix did say that the collaboration is a step toward the goal of boosting its Western development for global audiences. This also appears to be just one of numerous upcoming partnerships, as Square Enix described such collaborations as "a new cornerstone of its strategy to create games targeted primarily at consumers in Europe and North America."

For more on the original Supreme Commander (published by THQ), check out GameSpot's review of the original PC edition of the game.

Square Enix has the best people for drawing their graphics, and money to spare. A co-operation can only mean that GPG will now have enough money to do something amazing, and the animators to match it.

I wonder if there will be a new faction, all new factions, or all the same factions. Hopefully more info will come out soon. This is the best RTS I've played. UEF!

Square Enix prints money. I don't know why everyone is so worried they will ruin the game. Just becuase most of what they make is rpgs doesn't mean they can't make great non-rpgs. plus not everything they make is "anime" for example, the bouncer and front mission 4 both great games with different graphics.

people at Square Enix are not that stupid, that they would mess up the succesful formula of Supreme Commander. and i think Gas Powered Games will have the main role in development. i think this is only good news. it's gonna be massive...

Awsome! SupCom 2! The first one was awsome. But... why involve an another company? Time will tell how that goes. If much changes from the original gameplay, I'm not buying it.

there has been alot of debate with the ffvii remake. if they do remake it, it could just as easily go the other direction for squar enix. so in my opinion just improve the graphics for it maby a couple more easter eggs thats it. anyways this move does kinda surprise me. maybe a more detailed level system.

They could easily retake the throne if they'd just remake FFVII, maybe a few other early ones for PS3

I wish Square Enix had stayed as just a Japanese company... everyone loved their games already and they never had to expand to western audiences cause we already loved them... =(

Square Enix + Chris Taylor = Awesome Plot with a lot of new RTS features with amazing graphics and hopefully the two companies together will be better than the original game.

This is awesome news for any supcom fan. Since square has no experience in rts they will leave most of the development to Chris Taylor, with the exception of possibly forcing him to develop a better story line, seriously the last one was terrible. Also since this is Square's first try at a non *** game they will be looking to make a decisive move to show potential fans that they mean business, and will probably give it lots of aftermarket support since this will be their flagship game. I just hope they give some thought to competitive multiplayer EDIT Why are people saying Square needs to focus on FF13? Seriously that is being devoloped by a different Square than the one developing supcom, Square created a NA based version of itself to break into the NA/Euro gaming market. And just so you know producing games is alot different from devoloping games. Producing is pretty much sending a few people over with a suitcase full of money and making sure they use it effectively.

Well I'd have hoped that Square could give Supreme Commander a even barely acceptable story or something that midly looks like narrative flow, good game bad bad single player experience, but I think square is just footing a percentage of the development bill and getting a couple of their own people to work on it in order to learn how the west does things.

@zomglolcats: i am aware who developed and published Supreme Commander. my earlier comment is with regards to where squeenix is heading generally, i.e. they put too much time to re-make old games, release crap just to please bill gates with games like infinite undiscovery or screw all loyal final fantasy fans and delay the release of ffXIII for the PS3 so it will be released the same time as the rrod360 version. yeah, thanks to microsoft $$$. now, they are entering yet another venture which just make them seem to be trying to be just LIKE another US developer. the squaresoft i used to know developed the best rpgs out there. if they end up as another developer of shooters, the gaming world will take a huge leap ... backwards.

supreme commander has to be in my top 5 favourite rts of all time. and i am really hyped about the second one. it is being published by square..which i think is a plus point but i am not concerned about that. crysis was definately one game i was hyped for in some time and now this one and sc2.

I think it's an ingenious move on their part. Supreme Commander has a lot of potential in it, GPG is a great developer, and Square is a great publisher/developer as well. And, probably even more curious, we'll see some back-return on GPG helping SE work on their games. Just a thought on it, but still possible.

This has got to be the most unorthodox partnerships I've ever seen. I cannot imagine what Enix were thinking. Isn't there a more specific game developer they could tag with?

This really isn't all that confusing guys, c'mon. Think about it realistically. Square-Enix is most likely only going to be publishing and co-funding the game. That's all. You're not going to see any spiky-haired teenagers saving the world or anything. It's a mutually beneficial move for both parties involved. Gas Powered Games gets the backing of one of the world's leading publishers, and Square-Enix gets to stake a claim in the western games community.

I also don't see this working out, but you never know. I was never a big fan of Supreme Commander. I actually thought it was over hyped. Then again most games don't live up to there worth. I know Capcom have been successful over here, but is Gas Powered Games the way to go for Square-Enix? Seems like a rushed decision to me. I suppose time will tell.

this'll suck cos of square enix they recon they're so great well ill tell you this, WHO STILL PLAYS FINAL FANTASY? if you do let it die and play a GOOD game not one that uses a combat system 20 years old you'd think they'd let it die but no they had to give it the EA treatment

Well, it's pretty damn awesome there's gonna be a second one, but I really can't wrap my mind around SquareEnix joining in on it.....what am I supposed to expect? Anime Commander? Surely there were dozens of other companies that would have made far more suitable partners for SC2.

Square has made a few streagy games and is seeking deals to stay in profit, its not that bad.. its not like their quality of development can get worse... FF12 is broken and KH2 is boring after awhile....

I dunno, this cross cultural development sounds fishy to me. I love my Japanese games the way they are, but to be influenced by Western developers? I don't like the sound of that. But then I won't know until I see them produce something, then I'll judge em' for better of for worse.
