Square Enix orders Supreme Commander 2

Japanese role-playing publisher partners with Gas Powered Games on sequel to epic-scale real-time strategy game.

Last month, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada appeared on a Tokyo Game Show panel about the waning influence of Japanese game makers. He said Japan was no longer the leader in the worldwide gaming industry, having lost too much ground to rising markets in the US and Europe.

If Wada can't lead them, he'll apparently join them. Square Enix today announced a strategic partnership with Gas Powered Games that will see the creation of a sequel to the Redmond, Washington-based studio's large-scale real-time strategy game Supreme Commander. Square Enix didn't specify what its role in the game's creation would be, nor did it reveal any details on platforms, release windows, or gameplay features.

Square Enix did say that the collaboration is a step toward the goal of boosting its Western development for global audiences. This also appears to be just one of numerous upcoming partnerships, as Square Enix described such collaborations as "a new cornerstone of its strategy to create games targeted primarily at consumers in Europe and North America."

Perhaps one factor Japanese game makers should evaluate is the amount of "samurai" stereotype found in a multitude of video games. This is a very boring and unintuitive stereotype. Now I understand it may sell well in Japan, but if they really want to take the market globally, game makers are going to have to play to multiple countries' interests. For example, at the very least, making a stereotype for different kinds of gamers in the same game and giving them choice to play each. You can't make game after game after game that appeals to one country and expect that type of game to do well all over the world one day. It just doesn't happen. JRPGs are not going to dominate the consoles, nor are RTS games, unless they can manage to include global interests in the RPG/RTS. In short, if Japan wants to take over as the worldwide gaming capital (more or less), they are going to have to start thinking about making a game that can appeal to people globally by using people's likes and avoiding forcing them into one corner or another, give them choice to find what works best for them and it will work out eventually.

Hmmm...I'm a fan of the first one, loved it. I wish GPG was doing the sequel though...but we'll see, I trust SE to keep true to the gameplay and scale of the first title. Or else......>_>

Sounds great. Hopefully this next game will be able to be played on any or just about any kind of pc. Unlike SC it seems like you would need a very high end pc to enable all settings to be on high.

This is a little odd, but if it produces a good sequel I won't complain.

Is it just my impression or is SE gradually shifting their focus from the consoles to the PC. Same with Capcom, DMC was surprisingly good on the PC

Square-Enix is a fantastic RPG maker. I won't deny that. But the one attempt I can think of them trying to make a Strategy game was FFXIRW if I'm not mistaken, which wasn't bad, but wasn't absolutely fantastic either. Still, this is an interesting move and I loved Supreme Commander so I hope this works out for the better.

Supreme Commander is one of the greatest RTS' games I've ever played. I was a big fan of Total Annihilation back in the day as well. So I actually hope Square doesn't hurt the series....although Square has a solid track record so I'll try not to worry.

This is unexpected, and pointless. Out of all RTS'... Supreme Commander? Supreme Commander's sales weren't THAT good. I suppose Gas Powered Games is one of the last few independent RTS developers, though. All of the others have been bought up by big name publishers like Electronic Arts.

I'm sure Square Enix knows what they are doing. They want to start broadening their horizons and start thinking outside their traditional boundaries. I think this is a good thing, perhaps experiencing different genres and partnering with different developers will aid in some well designed cross-genre games down the line. Everyone knows Square Enix is looking to grab a larger share of the western market but in order to do so they have to understand what western audiences want and expect in video games. Personally I believe that if Square Enix really wants to increase their product sales in the west they should take some time to analyze Bioware's solid titles. In honesty the Western market isn't as confusing as they may think, we place a high degree of value on customization and personal integration in video games. Most western RPG's show this quite well by allowing you to create your character from the ground up deciding everything from looks to classes and skill sets. This is a far cry from JRPGs and role playing games made more for the traditional Japanese crowd (Don't get me wrong I love JRPGs) where nearly everything is dictated for you, you cant even change your name in most games anymore. I think Square Enix and other RPG developers in Japan will hit the sweet spot when they can merge their own distinct JRPG style with much of the customization and personal tweaking that is found in Western RPGs. Sorry about making this so long, just kinda started ranting ; p

Square Enix went down hill after FF10. Not even worth partnering with if you ask me. I a lot of their games after FF10 have been push overs. I guess they lost their awesomeness when they partnered with Enix.

This is April's Fools worthy. I guess its nice to see SE branch out and find other genres to profit in. Still, this is about as out of the blue as one can get.

What the hell? Why is Square Enix coming ANYWHERE NEAR Supreme Commander? I can't see ANY benefit coming from a partnership with Square/Enix for Supreme Commander... I mean, they're developing Demigod, which is an RPG/RTS. Why the HELL would they partner them for Supreme Commander rather than Demigod if they absolutely must have them involved with RTS development.
