S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 eyeing 2012

GSC Game World reveals true sequel to esteemed 2007 postapocalyptic survival shooter will feature all-new game engine.

After numerous delays, GSC Game World released the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007 and has since put out two follow-ups to capitalize on that game's critical success. The first, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, arrived in 2008 and operated as a prequel to the events in the original game, while this year's Call of Pripyat served as an extension to the end of Shadow of Chernobyl.

Chernobyl's long winter has not yet ended.
Chernobyl's long winter has not yet ended.

Now, GSC Game World is gearing up to deliver a sequel proper to Shadow of Chernobyl, announcing today that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will arrive in 2012. In announcing the game's development, GSC Game World also noted that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise has now sold more than 4 million units worldwide.

The studio did not provide much by way of gameplay details for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. However, GSC Game World did say that the game would benefit from an all-new multiplatform game engine that's being built in house. CEO Sergiy Grygorovych also characterized the game as "the next chapter" in the series.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe takes place in an alternate reality set in the infamous city of Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters that now occupy the postapocalyptic town.

nutcrackr Site moderator Posted Aug 13, 2010 5:56 pm PT Interesting to compare the announcements of Bioshock Infinite and STALKER 2. One comes with a fully rendered CG trailer, a teaser website, a slew of screenshots and even a synopsis. The other comes only with a news post only a few paragraphs long. ---------------------- ...and gets 160vs70 comments from ppl ;)

The original STALKER sold well over 2 million copies and is a PC exclusive. The ones after probably sold near that or more. It's not surprising they want to go multiplat despite the fact that I think STALKER would sell terribly on consoles. I do always like to laugh at the piracy comments. Starcraft II selling 1.5 million in 48 hours. Piracy? Right. Keep in mind DD like Steam accounts for 50% of PC game sales. And SCII sales were just retail. :)

The reason why us pc gamers don't like hearing the words "multiple platforms" is because the consoles have a different design entirely. The PC version of games always allow you to experience the full potential of the game, whether that be its graphics, or its dynamic in game interface. If for example your playing an rpg, which stalker had some rpg elements to it, then you have an interface that usually is better on a pc simply because its easier to scroll through things with a mouse than a controller. Console games can be great, but when you code for a game that is suppose to be on multiple platforms (most likely they'll be coding the game on a 360), then its optimized for a console, not a pc. and then that's when you have major problems pop up. I own a ps3, xbox 360 and a custom built pc rig.

@TheVGamer The majority of the bugs have been removed in patches... Even Clear Sky is nearly bug-free when you play with the "Clear Sky Complete" mod.

Stalker is one of those rough diamonds that never shined because of the economic problems. It had excellent atmosphere, good gameplay and tons of bugs. But anyway, they should just say 2013, I don't like those predictable delays.

Never supported the game due to bad optimization, and i felt it was doing bad. But im happy because other people supported it and now i cant wait for the sequel which will be greatly optimized with a new engine. Im still might get the trilogy since they are dirt cheap on amazon brandnew and im getting a high end pc with ati 5970 and six core amd cpu.

"@warmaster670 well it's hardly going to be the Wii is it?" Which has what to do with what i said? All it says in this article is that there using a new multiplatofrm engine, which has nothing to do with what platforms the game is available on, just that the engine, you know works on multiple platforms. The pc fanboys can thumbs down me all they want but they should really hush up until actual platforms are announced.

@Pipboy360 don't worry, i recieved the same 'warm welcome' when i put my point forward about multiplatform titles. You can't win here man, because it's obvious that these guys play nothing but P.C games and therefore probably hav'nt even bothered to play a multiplatform title to see for themselves if they are right or wrong. To call yourself a true gamer, and have a valid point, you should ideally own all platforms. To bash something you know nothing about, is caused by a disease called 'fanboyism' and it's symptoms include childishness, and an inability to be reasonable when taking in other peoples opinions. And anyway, when i played STALKER for the 1st time, back when it was a P.C exclusive, i failed to see the high standards you people say will slip when it's reworked for consoles, because i was blinded by the high number of bugs present in the final build of the game. Don't get me wrong, i loved the game, and enjoyed my time with it, but the 'perfection' that you say will apparently be destroyed in 2012 was definently not there.

S.t.a.k.e.r. was one of the games that requires a bit pattiens to understand and like. When it was reliesed it was buggy and unoptimized. Also it 1 hour of play is slow and boring becouse you are fighting with the mechanics of the game. But after you surpass this problems there is a game that can delever something that few other can: creepy atmosphere with sence of freedom and non forced exploration where you can explore if you want, but can skip and stick to the main quest and challenging fps with light rpg elements gameplay. Now I hope that the new game will have all this things that make the first great. It will be just sad to see it something with no challenge and limited exploration where you defeat horde of enemyes without a problem. Also hope the pc version will support mods (they made S.t.a.l.k.e.r. even more enjoyable). Excuse my bad english.

If they don't dumb down the PC version with crappy graphics and have the latest DirectX on Stalker 2 like the first stalkers and still have the ability to have all these awesome mods such as Oblivion Lost and pretty much have the full PC experience with no console crap on the PC version then a console version would be ok with me.

@Juggernaut140: I'm curious as to what your comment means...it's a true statement. Hell, even my Dell studio 15 PoS with an onboard, unrecognized graphics card can run STALKER with no issues. Care to explain your point? Or were you just fanboy-trolling? Anyways, good news. Love the original STALKER, great game with great modding. I would like to see them expand upon potential mod ability with a more full-featured construction set, I think that would do quite a bit to extend the life of the game.

I hope STALKER 2 has one fully integrated open-world environment. Aside from that, I don't want any major changes to the game itself. Make it just as atmospheric and difficult as before. :)

The problem is not the consoles in themselves, but cross-platforming. Games that come for even blenders with LCD screen are bound to be dumbed down in order to enter in the lowest common denominator (the least capable platform), I prefer single platforming, exploiting all the potential of the platform they chose, no matter if it's a PC or a console, that's why I love exclusives instead of the garbage that comes every month. CoD MW2 is the best example of not taking the PC gamers in consideration.

Too much console hate on here. If my PS3 can run a game like Killzone 2, it can run the first STALKER, now just stfu. But yeah, way too much awesome for 2012, we got STALKER 2 and BioShock Infinite already announced? Why does gaming exponentially get more and more badass every single year? I didn't think anything could top 2010 or 2011, but here we go.. damn. EDIT: Just went back even further and read more comments, and seriously, wtf is wrong with you people? Just because a game franchise makes it's way to a console, doesn't mean that the dev "sold out" or dumbed-down the PC version in any way. Only in rare cases do the console versions tamper with the PC versions, and that's just the way the developers handle that given franchise. Anyone remember Dragon Age? Remember how the PC version is so much better in every way? Did the console versions affect you at all? Stop all the hate; you PC fanboys are the worst. I had a gaming PC, and I've owned pretty much every console known to man over the years, so don't say I don't know what I'm talking about, some people just prefer consoles over PCs because of how much easier they are to set up and how they don't have to be upgraded. Can't you guys just respect someone's opinion instead of belittling it because it doesn't match your own? Your ridiculous, petty squabbles give a bad name to the industry and it's fans. That is all.

@guitarist1980 Paradox Interactive still largely makes PC exclusives too. Of course, it does not have the fame that Blizzard has and its games are generally difficult to run on consoles. It does at least make sure its games take advantage of latter-day PCs though.

@blaze11987 dude yeah there is a lot of harm.. But it is what it is.. we will continue to get console ports because thats where the money is but dont tell me there is no harm in it there is lots and lots of harm being done to innovate because consoles are stagnant.. I love my consoles but I want PC exclusives too and really there are none left besides Blizzard which is in a different league.

I'm finding it amusing how everyone who's excited about STALKER coming to consoles, are being thumbed down at every corner. if you check out steve4123456789's comment, he mentions that this type of game is now more marketable on home consoles, and he's completely right. Games like Modern Warfare 2 sold next to nothing compared to consoles, and i'v witnessed first hand, games like APB failing to sell substantial numbers. The only PC game i'v seen recently that performed strongly, was StarCraft 2, obviously due to it's genre, and it's grounding as a brilliant and respected franchise name. There is no doubt that playing on a PC will give better graphical performance, and certain genres (mainly RTS) are better played on a PC, but it's about time the PC crowd stopped bashing publishers and devs for 'selling out' to consoles. At the end of the day, is there any serious harm in having your game ported to an xbox360 or playstation 3 if you still get to play it on a PC? Or would you rather they kept games on PC and eventually go bust because PC just does'nt generate the income that it once did, unless your Blizzard?
