Star Citizen Single-Player Trailer Shows A Lot Of Celebrities

Has a video game ever featured this many celebrities?

Star Citizen's crowdfunding effort has been immensely successful. By the latest count, it's brought in more than $195 million. Some of that money has gone toward paying big-name actors to appear in the game's Squadron 42 single-player mode. And now, developer Cloud Imperium Games has released an impressive new trailer showing many of the big names who are lending their likenesses and voices to the game.

The trailer, which was released at the Star Citizen fan event CitizenCon, shows celebrities like Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Henry Cavill, John Rhys Davies, Liam Cunningham, and Ben Mendelsohn. We don't know for sure, but this appears to be one of the most celebrity-filled video games ever. Check out the trailer below.

Now Playing: Squadron 42 - CitizenCon Official Trailer

The trailer comes not long after Cloud Imperium Games shared more details on Star Citizen's new Alpha 3.3 update. It adds a new face-scanning Face over IP feature, as well as more ships, weapons, enemy characters, and lots more. Check out GameSpot's interview with the developer here to learn more.

No Caption Provided

Squadron 42, which bills itself as a "cinematic single-player adventure," sees you playing as a rookie combat pilot. Along the way, you'll come into contact with the characters played by all the celebrities in the trailer above.

Pledging $45 gets you instant access to the Arena Commander dogfighting/racing mode and the first-person shooter mode Star Marine. These modes, and Squadron 42, like Star Citizen, remain in active development with no official release date announced as of yet.

@gzaface: ...and how about your computer? I still remember when years ago I updated my PC from 4GB to 8GB to be able to "play" (I should rather employ the word "use", because play involves fun) one of the very first Alphas... , now I have another PC.... but "I have a bad feeling" that this one won't be able to run the Squadron 42 when it will be released (... because it will be too late)

@stardagger: take it you don't follow the game that well. Arena commander should be used to judge SQ42 performance as it won't be online. Also with the new update the online mode is getting over 60fps in 4k on top computers

Not gonna lie, that looked fantastic. Just hoping there'll be an actual release date soon, next year maybe?

@Lord_Sesshy: They're a lot farther on Sq42 then they let on no where near what's needed for that is needed for the sustained mmo part.

@Lord_Sesshy: The worst is that I just don't care anymore... I have already accepted that I have lost the money I invested in this game...

@stardagger: I wanted to build a PC just for this game but after all the video's I've seen on how the game economy will work (so far) I'm just gonna save my money. Sorry about the lost investment, it did look very promising.

@Lord_Sesshy: It's not that much of an investment $65 for two pay to own AAA games. All you need is an SSD, gtx 760 or better and 8 or more gigs of ram to play.

@ccgod: Depends on how much you invested though. Some people have spent thousands. As for the PC, that may run the game right now but the specs might change if it ever comes out. Till then I don't really need a gaming PC.

@ccgod: I still have a bit of hope left in this game though so I’m not selling my ships yet. I’m just too concerned about if it’s going to be really fun-action or just too much micro managing. I have a feeling also that having a constellation doesn’t help either.

I refused to care about this game after the first alphas and seeing that the development would take for ever.

For the moment I’m very vey excited about Starlink and actually having the possibility to have physical ships (not to play with them in the controller though) starlink is here and now. We’ll see what comes next and when

@ccgod @stardagger: I love my Sabre, but I wouldn't mind something else too if you really don't care. Heck I'd spend some more money to get something for cheap. I do miss my old Cutlass, but I had to upgrade.

@ccgod: "4 mantis on it" That combination is just way too OP lol. I had to get rid of mine because of running out of ammo too fast, but I haven't used it since 3.0, but I probably need to give it a try in 3.3 (The AI are killing me though, their tendency to "hug" the player is far worse than it ever was [I mean I can still beat them easily, but it is annoying flying at 10% throttle to 0% for the majority of a session]).

I still have yet to find the right combination though, since Stealth really isn't fleshed out yet, and with each additional update, everything that once was great keeps getting nerfed (Like the Omnisky IV's).

The Cutlass is great though, I'm just more of a fighter person. I love SC, but they really need to work on maneuvers/aiming. I miss the days of 2.5 where combat felt really rewarding and skill based. It frustrates me as they are trying to appease everyone (Mouse, Gamepad, HOTAS/Joystick) but always end up pissing off one of the groups (HOTAS is almost useless, maneuvers just don't matter in the slightest anymore, it's all about armor and gimbal aiming).

Thankfully it isn't permanent.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just finished my second test on Vanduul Swarm on 3.3 and was a bit annoyed (Had an AI just fly around about 3 meters from me for about 20 seconds before taking off a wing).

@Smosh150: the cutlass is normally pretty sturdy ship and hard to kill. Yea the not being able to carry the extra ammo yet is kinda a hinders ballistics. They said you'll be able to have ammo in cargo holds or other places to add to reserves.

@ccgod: Well in my play through today I actually never encountered the issue. With the Mantis I may have had ammo management issues, but I tried out the Tarantula 870's again today and those things not only have the ammo but have the damage.

Though I do look forward to when we can store more in the ships that do have cargo.

The problem with the Cutlass is that it lacks maneuverability and it is an easy target for missiles. It can be imposing at times, but overall if I struggle when it comes to guns against it then missiles make short work of it. The Cutlass is one of my favorite ships, but in a dogfight it can be pretty vulnerable without support (As well as a great kamikaze target for the AI, the AI needs some love bad).

@Smosh150: I like to hear that the controls are a bit “dumbed down” ...

The problem also when playing non finished versions of SW is you might get disappointed too early because the game is completely un polished... and then don’t want to come back until you have they have worked thoroughly on it.

And again wishing them would hurry up get the game done and not continue making the scope of the game bigger and bigger.

I want fun and I want it now.

@stardagger: "I like to hear that the controls are a bit “dumbed down” ..."

Quite the opposite actually. It is just that what those controls do isn't really all that useful yet (Well, some are, but nothing of major concern yet). What is a bit dumbed down is how they are balancing combat gameplay (At least in the fighter aspect). They've tried to appease everybody, but in doing so they've made combat maneuvers/agility far less important than aiming. This may not be a popular idea, but given I like flight sims I still think replacing the reticule/pipper with a variable gun convergence would make for a far more skill based system (Of course this is just my assumption, but it would be far more interesting to me, especially since they are pretty much trying to go for a WWII space game).

"The problem also when playing non finished versions of SW is you might get disappointed too early because the game is completely un polished... and then don’t want to come back until you have they have worked thoroughly on it."

Not really for myself, I do get frustrated as you have seen, but despite the unpolished nature of it I still find it quite an enjoyable experience. In fact playing from the early days has given me a perspective on just how far Star Citizens has come and how much each release changes it. It pretty much makes every new development something even more special.

"And again wishing them would hurry up get the game done and not continue making the scope of the game bigger and bigger.

I want fun and I want it now."

I can definitely understand that. I love the scope and what they are adding to it, but I don't think all of what is added needs to be in the initial release. Add it in post release (As in out of alpha/beta) unless it is something that needs to be a core feature added during the earlier phases.
