Star Fox Zero Delayed to Nail "Platinum Feel," Dev Discusses 60 FPS on Both Screens

"Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting."

Star Fox Zero may be delayed for additional polish, but according to Platinum Games' Yusuke Hashimoto--who is co-directing the game alongside Shigeru Miyamoto's team at Nintendo--the game is already running at 60 frames per second on both the television screen and the Wii U GamePad.

"Those two screens, you can't find that anywhere else," Hashimoto told GameSpot during a recent interview. "When we were doing Bayonetta 2, we just used that screen as a touch pad. With Star Fox, Miyamoto originally had the idea that he wanted to create a shooting game that used both of these screens, and then we said, okay, how can we combine this with Star Fox? Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting.

"We've got them both moving at 60 fps, which is big for a lot of people, I think," he continued. "But I think that it's kind of a milestone in gaming, in a way. It's not something that we have done ourselves before at Platinum, and it's just not even something that has been done in gaming before. So it's a lot of new challenges."

Hashimoto added that the biggest challenge with Star Fox Zero has been making sure using both screens feels natural and interesting--and more importantly, fun. For Miyamoto's team as well as Hashimoto and his collaborators, creating a shooter using the GamePad controls is a new experience.

"We've been working with action games long enough," Hashimoto said. "We understand how the players play an action game, how they respond to an action game, how they'll move, what they'll do in the situational stuff. What we're making here now, it's totally a new learning experience for us, which is kind of fun to find out."

In mid-September, Miyamoto posted a heartfelt note to Facebook stating that Star Fox Zero had been delayed into 2016. GameSpot's own hands-on preview from E3 earlier this year describe controls and concepts that were a struggle to grow comfortable with. In his note, Miyamoto cited further polish to level design and cutscenes as well as to how players would utilize both the TV and GamePad screens. Hashimoto reiterated that quality is the reason for the delay, and added that his studio's task in the matter is to give the game more of that "Platinum feel."

"We want to make it feel as great as possible," Hashimoto said. "It's easy to say [it was delayed] to increase its quality, or whatever, but that entails a lot, whether it be visuals, or controls."

Star Fox Zero is currently slated to launch in 2016. Platinum Games' involvement with the title was announced at E3 earlier this year.

Totally agree...I also feel people just like to jump on Nintendo...had Playstation or Xbox made this controller...it would be a system advantage...its an incredible advancement in gaming...for some games you can jump off the tv and play it on the tablet if somebody else wants to watch a program.

Want to surf the net on it...cool surf a way. The specs on the thing is just fine and actually show better texture than my flat screen vizio tv.

It also is the single best reason that on some games it is handily the best way over any system to play local play games....Madden, CoD, Splatoon, Mario Cart...this also works for a Coop play games...you don't have to share the screen and don't have to struggle with dumbass split screens...the controller is not gimmick its conventional...and sets the Wii U vastly over the competition when it comes to local play gaming...

But hey....haters is going to hate...i wouldn't drop it for the world Nintendo...actually do the opposite...push the hardware...and push it some more...show the gaming world how you dont have to show the competition what formations your looking at on madden...you dont have to play splitscreen on CoD when playing in the same room with your brother/sister or friend...and in this case...if Nintendo adds multipalyer or co op on starfox...you won't have to play it on splitscreen or on a shared screen...its like playing online with the person in the same room...

well you know what that means more G-force training.
shame about their legs though....

I wounder how Fox's son would handle it.

Fox at the age 40 as his son comes up to him.

Son : "Daddy I want to be a star Fox pilot when I grow up"

Fox : "That's a good job son it is how I met your mother"

Son : "Dad why don't you have legs?"

Fox :"I had them cut off so I could handle higher g-forces"

Son : "What's a g-force daddy?"

*Fox grabs son by neck and shakes him over his head in a circular motion*

Fox: "Its like that son"

Son: "If that's a g-force that hurts my neck, I really want my legs cut off now"

Fox: "We all did son" *Fox said as he looks to his wife in hindsight*

As much as I like Nintendo and the WiiU but stop forcing stupid dual screen gimmicks on every friggin game.

Only a handful of games actually do it right and on them it's mere a menu shortcut or maps & minor stuff but in 80% of the WiiU games it's either pointless or outright crap.

I am looking forward to it but I also sure as hell won't touch it before I defenitely know they didn't srcew this up with some crap gimmick.

@seriousdave: There is a reason Starfox has it's track record, you can't FORCE it to stay the same, it needs to evolve. Otherwise it dies for sure. Quit being bitchy about "Gimmicks", "Gimmicks" are a GOOD THING. Try new shit, instead of putting up with the same old.

@seriousdave: Its experimentation some games don't need it heavily featured, others do and it wont work perfectly. The idea sounds good here, we''ll see how it ends up. I think most peoples problem with it, wont be its execution. It will be people's reluctance to try and learn a new control method.

@Sepewrath: agreed...and some just like to hate on Nintendo...let this had been a playstation controller....people would be in love with it playing Madden and CoD and the other great titles the Playstation and Xbox has that feature local game play...all their great FPS, shooters, RPG'S, and racing titles...

@obsidian_born: I'm a big fan of the controller myself and find its size and weight great...the smaller controllers are too close and cramp my hands...as i am 38...i play for hours on that thing without so much as a cramp that i get from pro controllers...its not perfect but something that can be redesigned and added on to move forward but the concept, the level of local play, the function to play it while not on the tv, and all around functionality enhances the game experience...but I do feel pushing the options to switch from standard to tablet should be pushed more...that way they can make gamers like me and you happy...just another way to making a well rounded console...

@Master_Of_Fools:

Uh, no it does not! Play Kirby : Rainbow Curse look at the two displays then. There is zero color depth on the Gamepad. Everything looks bland.

My phone and any and all tablets have a better display than the Gamepad. Not to mention how heavy it is, and that does become an issue when playing certain games, the 2 hour battery life, the overall feel and design of the controller lacks quality and is borderline fisher price. Nintendo has lost almost all of my respect.

@obsidian_born: Wow, Mr. Casual gamer over here....First of all a Cell Phone of course has high def displays...IT'S A FUCKING PHONE. PEOPLE DONT BUY IT IF IT DOESN'T THAT'S IT'S WHOLE SELLING POINT. FOR THE CASUALS WHO SALVATE AT THE SIGHT OF OMFG 4K!!!!! Gamepad is as heavy as an Xbox or Playstation controller, you have no Wii U you puke, anyone who holds it may say it's uncomfortable till you get used to it, BUT NOBODY but a 1 year old would say it's heavy. You mention the battery life lets be honest ALL 8th gen controllers have a shitty battery life, and back on the point of phones, you don't play full games on those and games you do play on your phones drain your battery in 30 minutes so thats ever worse then console controllers. I don't even support Nintendo anymore, hell I don't even really support the gaming industry much anymore, but you're just making shit up.

@Master_Of_Fools:

The charge cord for the Gamepad has a power brick and has to be plugged into the wall with no option for USB.... Enough said. Tablets can last for like 5-10 hours GAMING . Its a tablet controller it doesn't even process the game it streams footage thats it... Why would you argue that the Gamepad is not poor quality? One thing!? Say it!?

It "just gets by" or "does enough to get by." Why? because they want to keep the console cheaper than the competition and make more profit than the competition. I for one want a high quality product from Nintendo for a change.

Yes it is heavy. That isn't such a bad thing. I am getting the Xbox ELITE controller, its supposedly heavy but its also made with stainless steel to prevent it from wearing out. Its really high quality. (don't throw the price in my face its a great deal compared to its competition <SCUF>) But with the Gamepad when you play games like Kirby Rainbow Curse, you have to hold it with one hand it is awkward, like really awkward. Matter of fact its all around an awkward controller.

DEAL WITH IT... CRY-BABY.

@obsidian_born: Ohhhh your getting the Xbox One Elite Controller now it makes sense. Your a worthless worm, also known as an American LOL. Well then so sorry life dealt you a bad hand, but hey at least being American gets you some pity....some...

As for the "Cry-Baby" part, not exactly wise to insult a god. But have your fun, I'm insulted every damn day of the year by troglodytes like yourself.

@mjc0961: The developers of Platinum are the guys that made Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Vanquish and Bayonetta. Hideki Kamiya in particular had been wanting to make a Star Fox game because Star Fox 64 is one of his favorite games of all time, and went so far as to include a Star Fox easter egg in Bayonetta 2.

If there's any developer that could make Star Fox right, it would be Platinum. The 2-screen thing is very likely Miyamoto's addition.

No online play, looks like a Gamecube game but at least it does 60 FPS (as if that is really an achievement in 2015).

Wii U continues to be a little kid box.

@xxxInfectedxxx: I don't even understand that kind of statement how can it be a "little kid box" when it just video games. Unless they make games based on actual child media don't see how that could apply.

"Looks like a gamecube game" - Too bad all of the other consoles are terrible this gen too.

"At least it does 60 fps" - I'm pretty sure PS4 and One both throw this statement out as much as they can too (And some of their games still can't do 60fps-1080p).

Man that's crazy that they are able to push 60FPS on two different screens with the Wii U granted the gamepad's screen will likely not be running as high a resolution as the TV screen that's still a rather impressive feat. I wonder and this is just me guessing here but if they were to only use the TV screen instead of the dual screen setup do you think they could push 120FPS with the Wii U's hardware in this game?

Take your time Nintendo and Platinum, but I still can wait for this. Don't forget that we want another release of Fox McCloud Amiibo; and the rest of the team for Amiibo would be greatly appreciated as well (Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi, Pigma Dengar). Also, how about Fox's love interest, Krystal?

@cooppp: Well, it's running at 120fps. Most PS3 games only run at 30fps so you wouldn't expect PS3-par graphics at 4 times the framerate.

I have no issue with it. After playing the arwing section in Bayonetta 2 I'm more than willing to wait. I saw some other screens of the game and I really like the environments that the game is running in. I just hope that the Platinum feel is as excellent as it is with Bayonetta 2, and TW101.

Hey Nintendo, remember when you had a couple Dual Screen Star Fox games on the DS and they sucked?

Remember when you guys forced stylus controls to make Mario run on the DS version of Mario 64 and it sucked?

Please remember gimmicks do not always make for better gameplay.
