Star Fox Zero Delayed to Nail "Platinum Feel," Dev Discusses 60 FPS on Both Screens

"Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting."

Star Fox Zero may be delayed for additional polish, but according to Platinum Games' Yusuke Hashimoto--who is co-directing the game alongside Shigeru Miyamoto's team at Nintendo--the game is already running at 60 frames per second on both the television screen and the Wii U GamePad.

"Those two screens, you can't find that anywhere else," Hashimoto told GameSpot during a recent interview. "When we were doing Bayonetta 2, we just used that screen as a touch pad. With Star Fox, Miyamoto originally had the idea that he wanted to create a shooting game that used both of these screens, and then we said, okay, how can we combine this with Star Fox? Just having to use those two screens makes things interesting.

"We've got them both moving at 60 fps, which is big for a lot of people, I think," he continued. "But I think that it's kind of a milestone in gaming, in a way. It's not something that we have done ourselves before at Platinum, and it's just not even something that has been done in gaming before. So it's a lot of new challenges."

Hashimoto added that the biggest challenge with Star Fox Zero has been making sure using both screens feels natural and interesting--and more importantly, fun. For Miyamoto's team as well as Hashimoto and his collaborators, creating a shooter using the GamePad controls is a new experience.

"We've been working with action games long enough," Hashimoto said. "We understand how the players play an action game, how they respond to an action game, how they'll move, what they'll do in the situational stuff. What we're making here now, it's totally a new learning experience for us, which is kind of fun to find out."

In mid-September, Miyamoto posted a heartfelt note to Facebook stating that Star Fox Zero had been delayed into 2016. GameSpot's own hands-on preview from E3 earlier this year describe controls and concepts that were a struggle to grow comfortable with. In his note, Miyamoto cited further polish to level design and cutscenes as well as to how players would utilize both the TV and GamePad screens. Hashimoto reiterated that quality is the reason for the delay, and added that his studio's task in the matter is to give the game more of that "Platinum feel."

"We want to make it feel as great as possible," Hashimoto said. "It's easy to say [it was delayed] to increase its quality, or whatever, but that entails a lot, whether it be visuals, or controls."

Star Fox Zero is currently slated to launch in 2016. Platinum Games' involvement with the title was announced at E3 earlier this year.

@HonorOfGod: He's wrong. They're not. The "gyro" controls are optional, but the gamepad is not.

@Thanatos2k: I thought it was understood that "gyro" was what was meant by gimmicky. The E3 build didn't have different controls, but it was confirmed before E3 and even after, according to Nintendo UK, that gyro controls were optional.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/06/nintendo_says_that_star_fox_zeros_gyro_controls_can_be_turned_off

If we're changing "gimmicky" in this context to include using the gamepad at all, well, not sure what else to say.

@Steel_Shadows: The gamepad is gimmick controls. Forcing you to use the gamepad screen to aim shots is as gimmicky as forcing you to use the touchscreen for controls in StarFox Command. And StarFox Command sucked. People wondered why you couldn't just steer with the Dpad and why they had to use this horrible gimmick. From reports of people who played SF0 at E3, people are already wondering why they can't just aim with a Pro Controller and why they have to use this terrible gimmick.

@Thanatos2k: You're certainly entitled to think so, I was specifically thinking that @HonorOfGod was talking about gyro. This indicated before E3 that there were plans for dual analogue control, and this indicates that they're thinking about trying to go with pro controller support. Maybe not enough since you seem to not like the direction behind the game to begin with, but it's something.

@Steel_Shadows:"This indicated before E3 that there were plans for dual analogue control"

And this from E3 indicates those plans didn't amount to anything, and gamepad is forced.

"and this indicates that they're thinking about trying to go with pro controller support"

Does it? Because it doesn't sound like it.

"We basically created this game as one you need the GamePad to play"

What more needs to be said?

"Basically one person would control flying the Arwing and the other person would be aiming and shooting. This is something maybe parents and children could be doing together"

That sounds horrible. That doesn't sound like they're thinking of pro controller support at all. Sounds like how there's "co-op support" in Mario Galaxy, where one player actually plays and the other person does pointless nonsense.

If you want to play the game ALONE (given it's a single player game, this is the regular use case!), you have to use the tablet, and the tablet gimmick controls.

@Thanatos2k: Ok. It doesn't really matter to me at this point, I've explained my position as much as I feel was necessary and your responses amount to, "I disagree and read something different out of this than you." And that's fine! I just hope the game turns out ok, with more than two control options to boot.

@Thanatos2k: My claim that a control style other than gyro is being worked on is not wrong just because it wasn't available at E3. The only direct word on dual analogue control is it's being implemented, with E3 being used to introduce the gyro stuff. I don't understand why you insist otherwise.

@Steel_Shadows: "My claim that a control style other than gyro is being worked on is not wrong"

It's wrong because there's nothing in the links you provided that suggest they're working on them and making the gamepad optional. Those quotes I provided up there are direct quotes from your "evidence"

@Thanatos2k: I've never claimed the gamepad was definitely (as opposed to maybe) going to be optional, only that gyro will be, because my "evidence" says that dual analogue is being worked on as an alternative to motion controls, not as an alternative to using the gamepad as a controller. I've told you multiple times now that I thought HonorOfGod meant gyro when he said "gimmick," and you keep insisting that "gimmick" instead must mean gamepad use period. You don't speak for him, and at this point it's clear you just want to argue because it's too hard to admit that maybe you were wrong about this. And hey, guess what, I'm willing to admit I was wrong as far as current information goes if HonorOfGod meant using the gamepad rather than gyro, since the only confirmed things being worked on are dual analogue and gyro. Let the original comment maker be the decider there, since it's clear we were talking about different things.

Shame. I don't care about graphics. At first I tought the delay was to add a much needed multiplayer game mode but seems it's not the case.

I found Star Fox Zero to be kind of underwhelming, at least what they showed of it anyway. If a delay's going to help it, then I'm all for it. It was 8 years between Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Assault. It's been 10 years since Star Fox Assault. Zero didn't look like the triumphant return that people would've hoped for after such a long time since a console release.

With such a large gap I think people expect a jump like the one between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. Granted that's not fair because I'm talking about a jump from 2D to 3D in the case of Metroid, but Zero looked like just another entry that you would've seen from a series that gets a release every year or two. This is further magnified when you look at what they're doing with the new Zelda game relative to the ones before it.

Star Fox: Zero could use an extra layer or two dozen of polish anyway. I just hate how the game itself is being held back by the dumbass second screen which, to add insult to injury, looks fucking horrendous and an utter waste of time.

@davillain-: I pray it's just a completely optional gimmick that Nintendo has forced in to try and make the gamepad more relevant.

I love the WiiU sure but I dunno about it with this game.

@davem1992: the hud can be on the second screen, not so important stuff can be on the Wii U tablet and the Gyroscope could be used as a yoke,

Sony pretty much did nothing with the PS3 sixaxis gyroscope controller.

Sony comes up with ideas but doesn't follow through, worse than Sega...

@Nightelf123: the fanboy is strong in this one lol I have a PS4 and a Wii U. I love in Nintendo always have and I bought a wii U because of Mario Maker. I'm 26 married, no kids. Don't get me wrong but the Wii U is a failure....even though i bought one on Sept 11th to get the Mario Maker version. I used the credits I had on my 3ds to get Smash Bros on Wii U as well...these are probably the only must buy games for me on Wii U. I'm not hating on anyone that likes other genres, but I personally only need these 2 games (might get mario kart eventually). I loved Star Fox on the SNES growing up...but in all honesty I hated the one on 3ds and I will probably hate this one, so it is a pass for me...but bashing Battlefront because it doesn't have space battles just seems low....they could have done space battles if it looked like this game..but come on...I played the Beta for Battlefield on PS4 and it is honestly the most beautiful game ive played on a console...I'm not a graphics whore at all...but I was really wowed by the graphics...I'm not getting it but comparing the 2 is really like comparing apples and oranges....and mario maker is the best game ever made...needs more stuff in it though in DLC.

@playstationzone: Not sure if it will fail, but decisions regarding what Nintendo does come mostly from Japan, and apparently it's terribly organised, any single person in management can veto a decision (!!) and some of them have been there since NES (!!!) and can't possibly understand the importance of online vs local couch (!!!!).

Nintendo won't fail outright, but, they may slowly fade from existence in 15 years (3 consoles from now).

@playstationzone: because Nintendo has very successful properties like Zelda, Mario Bros, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Pikmin, Smash Bros and Poke'mon you think Nintendo is living in the passed?

Sony barely makes games for their PS4 and PS Vita everybody else does so if Sony video game consoles sales drop off Sony is F#CKED all the publishers will leave.

See example PS Vita

I doubt the Nintendo NX can be any more of a disappointment than PS Vita, Sony has being setting the bar pretty low for portable video game consoles.
