Star Wars Battlefront Beta Open to All

Plus, EA answers frequently asked community questions; Still no word on release date.

Publisher Electronic Arts is pledging to provide enough server capacity so that anyone who wants to play the Star Wars Battlefront beta will be able to do so.

Mathew Everett, a Battlefront community manager, confirmed on EA's Star Wars blog that the beta would remain open once it is deployed. He also offered new details about what gameplay modes will be available, but was not able to offer more insight into a release date.

He said the beta "will consist of both our offline and online modes, including co-op and split-screen co-op, and it will take place on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and via Origin for PC."

As well as connecting as many as 40 players together in sprawling multiplayer battles, the beta will serve as a demo for an offline co-op mission mode called Survival. This horde-style mission drops players on Tatooine and throws various waves of Imperial AI opponents in front of them.

Everett also answered some questions that were said to have come from the Battlefront community, which follow:

Q) Will there be any AI bots in multiplayer in addition to other players?

A) Yes! Our Fighter Squadron mode features AI units (10 on each side).

Q) Will there be sidearms or only primary guns?

A) We offer a primary blaster along with a hand of Star Cards. How you customize your Star Card hand will be up to you.

Q) What comes with the various editions, i.e. Deluxe vs. Standard?

A) The Standard Edition of Star Wars Battlefront will include the base game. The Deluxe Edition will include the base game and have the Ion Grenade, Ion Torpedo, and DL-44 unlocked right away along with the exclusive Ion Shock and Victory emotes.

Q) Can I buy the Deluxe Edition on disk in a retail store, or is it just digitally online?

A) The Star Wars Battlefront Deluxe Edition is available as a physical item for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only.

Q) Can I upgrade my vehicles in Star Wars Battlefront?

A) Vehicles in Star Wars Battlefront come with their own weapons and abilities that make them authentic to the Star Wars universe.

Let's all play the beta and decide if it's worth the investment. I like star wars and it will be cool as a battlefield game but I too am apprehensive

@TORCEDOR: most of the people that played titanfall, played its beta... so i wouldnt assume anything to be honest, i would wait and get the thing only if the reviews are good... the only reason to pre order it, is the little Han Solo fridge you get in SOME pre orders...

Does anyone here, who has played SWBF2, actually think this game is any good? I understand, we are Star Wars fans, if its Star Wars, its day one or bust, blah blah blah. But really, is anyone actually interested in this game?

@Pokemon18986: I tried the game out at Fan Expo in Toronto recently and it did play quite well. Definitely feels a bit more like Battlefield with the weapons and equipment of the Star Wars universe.

Still I just can't get over how the new game has refused to take steps forward from Battlefront 2 and is probably going to be a bit lacking on features. Surely with updated tech and a higher budget we should expect them to really push the series forward? I was really hoping for seamless space to planet battles and updates to modes like Galactic Conquest and Instant Action.

@Pokemon18986:

I am.

At first, I was skeptical. I though DICE was gonna shit on the franchise and just release Battlefield: Star Wars, but throughout development, there have been a bunch of positive things I am excited about.

Cool. Now I can play the Beta and not have to buy the game. A few matches of this game is about all I'll want to play.

@Tripwolf:

I think it makes sense that you cannot. The vehicles in Star Wars behave a certain way and have certain features/abilities, and people are expecting them to behave a certain way. In order for upgrading to really work in this sense, you would have to start out by giving players vehicles that are less than they are, so like an X-WIng that isn't 100% X-wing yet - that's just lame.

@prats93: It will be directly linked in the PS Store, just like all the other past betas (like Black Ops 3 and Planetside 2). Or you can search it whenever the Battlefront Beta launches. ^_^

@quink: There is no sign up, because it will be available to download immediately (on whatever day they release it). Check Origin on PC, Xbox Store on Xbox One, and PS Store on PS4. ^_^

You absolutely SHOULD preorder this right now -- but only to get the Han Solo mini-fridge, which is the only part that will work properly on Day 1. Just install the game a couple of months later.

Do yourself a favor and pick this game up a year after release. They might have sorted all problems by then and you can pick up the cheaper version with DLC pass.

We know how EA games roll

I've got a bad feeling about this game. It's pretty, sure. But dev comments and answers have all been vague and wishy washy at best. The lack of content compared to past entries along with the rush to release it to capitalize on the film hype means it is likely a shadow of what it could be.

Imagine a battlefront created by DICE without any EA meddling and taking all the time they need, rather than meeting Disney and EA's desired release window. Would likely be twice the game.

@spikepigeo: I agree. The new game absolutely had to be out right on time for Episode 7 to maxmise the profits. If DICE had been given an extra year, they could have added so much; space battles, clone wars, galactic conquest, instant action and more general upgrades to the entire game. I can't help but think of all the ways they could have progressed forward with 10 years between it and the original. Instead it feels like the game is going to be really light on features, and yet everyone will just eat it up anyway.

@spikepigeo: I feel the same. I want to get hyped for this, but I feel that they're banking a lot of the game on this 'authenticity' they keep hammering away at. That's great and all and can provide for a fun atmosphere for a while, but in the end they need to make sure that have..you know, a game that people enjoy playing with all the features, customization, and variety that this usually entails. Even if that means taking a few liberties.

That's fuckin' wicked, all developers with online modes in their games should take a massive note. Shame you have to use origin though, really don't like it.

I'll buy this game for sure, but I'm still on the fence about whether I buy it right when it comes out or wait for the price to drop to around $20.

The beta will help me decide I'm sure. Although I bought Destiny based on the beta and kind of got screwed there.

@JustinGoSka: Do EA games ever drop that low in price...? Titanfall was the only game I saw near the price point, but then you've got the full priced DLC on top of that, which brings it right back up to $60 :(

I'm considering this game at a lower price point too, but that'd have to include the DLC!

I paid $12 on the X360 for the Deluxe version of Titanfall. Today, one can just get the base game as all of the DLC is free.

@xisiuizado: Ah yes, that's right. Unfortunately I'm on PC and they only offered that kind of deal after the community had all but vanished. It's still worth playing on Xbox 1, but the PC community was dead before the game was ever reasonably priced (for me) :(

That's too bad. While I didn't play it much because I prefer Garden Warfare, the fluidity of movement in Titanfall is shockingly perfect. Hopefully the next one will get better traction for you on PC.

Or, better yet, get an X1! ;)

@nl_skipper: The DLC for Titanfall has gone on sale for super cheap too though.

All games drop in price eventually, its just a matter of when. Games that are really good and have a lot of replay value drop slower though because there aren't as many uses copies people are trying to get rid of.

Right now I'm waiting for the price on Mad Max to drop.

They didn't even answer half the questions...

I might as well try the beta though, since I'm definitely not buying the game.

Q) Will there be sidearms or only primary guns?

A) We offer a primary blaster along with a hand of Star Cards. How you customize your Star Card hand will be up to you.

Non-BS A) Maybe...?

Q) Can I upgrade my vehicles in Star Wars Battlefront?

A) Vehicles in Star Wars Battlefront come with their own weapons and abilities that make them authentic to the Star Wars universe.

Non-BS A) Probably not.

@nl_skipper: The Star Cards are customizable loadouts basically. So you can use the space for a sidearm or you can use the space to equip other things.

And no, the vehicles aren't customizable. Their configuration will be as depicted in the films.

Hope this helps. :)
