Valve's popular PC online platform Steam now has more than 100 million active accounts, which is up by 25 million from the 75 million figure announced in January. Valve revealed the new user figure today as part of a wider announcement of the major Steam Discovery update.

It is unclear how Valve defines "active" in the case of Steam users, but we've have followed up with Valve for further clarification. We'll update this story with anything we hear back.

Valve also announced today that there are now more than 3,700 total games on Steam. More than 1,300 games have been added so far in 2014, which is up substantially compared to last year when only 304 titles were added to Steam in the first nine months of the year.

For more on Steam's wide-ranging Steam Discovery update, which introduces a range of features and functionality aimed at helping you filter through the flood of new releases, be sure to read GameSpot's interview with Valve about it.

"Active" accounts in question. They're probably counting every person who ever created an account. Not to mention multiple accounts by the same user.

Steam is nothing but 85% casual arcade/dated title gamers anyway. Meh

Who would have thought my 20+ fake accounts would actually amount to something besides metal farming/idling, scamming newbs, damaging the marketplace and griefing people in DOTA and TF2?

Wow, as if Steam's amount of users wasn't impressive enough already. With Steam already being so big and old, I didn't think it would grow so much in such a short time. Now it'll be even harder to see how large PC gaming is in economic terms, since Steam doesn't release sales numbers.

Pretty sure they count any account that has had activity (played a game, purchased a game or logged in) in the past 30 days as "Active"

Just thinking that even though quite a few of the new 25 million are probably fake accounts, still put that in perspective. More people have joined steam since January than total consoles sold of the xbox one and ps4 since their release. Pc gaming dead, nope.

Using this as an indication is massively flawed due to two reasons.

1. Steam released around the time of the PS2 (if we were to compare PS2/PS3/PS4 sales to the free Steam accounts you would find the Sony consoles ALONE massively overtake their steam free account counterparts)

2. You are comparing free accounts to Actual sales figures, it's essentially like using facebook or twitter to dictate PC gamings popularity over consoles.

Truth is, aside from a few massively unreliable sources that can essentially be traced back to 'insider leaks' and 'survey based reports / predictions' there are no objective statistics in regards to PC gaming and console gaming.

There really is no factual way to find out which is more popular. If, however you dig deeper and base your opinion around for knowledgeable facts and observations on the general markets orientation you will find the odds favor consoles.

Every major gaming event, gaming outlet or game in general is on console (with it being exclusive a lot of the time!). Why would the more relevant / corporate developers ignore/neglect PC gamers if they are easily the biggest market / as big as people make them out to be? Why are consoles always prioritized? Why are PC exclusives so obscure and unknown aside from it's prehistoric MMO's?

I'm a PS4/PC gamer but saying PC gaming is far more popular / relevant than console gaming is gross misinformation on a grand scale.

Fact is nobody knows / will know but you can get a well informed idea.

I'm not really sure why people think this is a huge milestone. First of all, anything that's free is going to get downloaded by people. Flappy Bird was downloaded about 100 million times and in just a few months, just to put things in perspective.

Second, if you want to talk about quality of service: GOG>Steam.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It is a huge milestone because they only count user who are actively on and using the service to play games. People who just download the program, and do nothing on it aren't in the listing.

@ExoticCharm comparing steam to gog is like comparing apple pie to apples. If i want to play a 2d platformer or classic games then i will be sure to head over to gog but if i want to play modern games then i will use steam.
Although i do play classic games released on steam, i still prefer it over gog.

GOG>Steam

Almost always if we are talking about the quality of the service. But I have yet to buy a game off gog while at the same time I have 600 games on steam. I want to love gog, but It is only old games. Gog will always get more popular no doubt. But the thing that will keep it from ever getting close to steam is new releases. Besides The witcher gog has nothing of national oomph from the past 2 years. the closest I got to buying a game from Gog was theme hospital which I think is a classic which is was gog is mostly about, classics.

I do plan on buying stuff from gog, and I visit the storefront just about as often as I do steam just to see what is there, but nothing is there that I want. But Gog is a drop in the ocean compared to the wanted content provided on steam. Again I agree that DRM free, support for old games on new versions of windows/linux, and better sales than steam, is something that monumentally makes me respect gog more than steam, they love pc gamers, in fact they define pc gaming love . But gog as a service is for those people stuck in the 90s and early 2000s of pc gaming who feel that it was better then to what is offered today.

I know it all comes down to opinion since there are some new great titles from smaller devs that have been released recently on gog. but it is 1/10 of the big titles that come to steam. And the thing is those 9/10 are never coming to gog because devs still appreciate DRM, and steam is one of the best versions of DRM out there. Sure no DRM is better than DRM, but just because a game fantastically has been supported to run from 1998 with drm removed doesn't mean I need it. If Humble Bundles starts including GOG keys on purchase, or keys or games from my steam library can be transferred and activated on GOG, then I will start using it. let me know when they put age of empires on gog though. then drm free would be worth it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> to be fair, GoG does have excellent new releases besides Witcher, it's just that they aren't really the AAA games you are talking about. Divinity Original Sin, Wasteland 2, things like that - those are coming out on GoG (as well as Steam). I agree with your point - they have an uphill battle to face, though, getting devs like Ubisoft and such to release new games DRM Free on GoG. Still, guess I'm stuck in the 90s because I love GoG ;-)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I guess I just missed a lot of the charm of the 90s. Back then I was a child and had a limited library. If they put all the old lego games on gog, I would purchase all of them. Is there a way to request games on gog. I like all the age of empires, urban assault, old sims games, stuff like that. But I am lost as to most of the games I see on gog. I'm glad they are there though. I still see gog at most getting 30-40 percent of new releases, no matter how big it gets. Devs just won't risk drm free when potentially millions of copies could be sold more securely elsewhere. I think a good way to compare games on steam to games on gog is like watching a movie in a movie theater and then waiting for a new release dvd to come out on redbox. because even when everyone else gets the movies 30 days earlier on redbox you still have to wait. So it still the same product, but the selection is minor and guaranteed to have a wait compared to seeing it in theaters (which would be steam).

Lol right...is that why PC gamers don't get all the exclusives anymore? X1 and PS4 owners will have their 2nd remastered version of GTA V before you PC tools even get to see your first. And how about that Destiny you guys never saw? The Last of Us? Lol....so yeah, PC FTW my arse. Woo. Idlot

Slenderbox (reference to the Xbox logo looking like this: << LINK REMOVED >> ) along with parodying the Slenderman Song lyrics on youtube to make a joke about how bad the system was before launch. I also called it the Ex-box as another word play on the name.

@vadagar1 Also, a Skyrim that's 10 times as fun as the one available on consoles. Dicking around with the editor and installing mods are a huge part of what makes these games replayable and enjoyable

Congratulations to STEAM, it is a great platform.

With that said, I'm afraid that they are gaining too much power in the industry.

If they can make physical copies go away, they will have the monopoly of the PC industry.

The prices on STEAM without any discount are already too high for a download.

I predict prices on STEAM to go through the roof in the next years.

PS:need more Half-Life!!!!!!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well physical copies were already going away on PC before Steam got involved, and are beneficial to indie devs who can't afford physical releases.

The pricing for larger games on Steam being near the same is because publishers don't want to undercut retailers that are still huge to their business on the console side for multi-platform games.

I'd still trust Valve with huge power than Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo any day.

There is plenty of other services.... Just that Steam was the first to do it, and is therefore the best.

Others seem to still be learning from Steam's mistake which are years old and solved already by Valve.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I disagree, they have the lead now but when other companies start to launch their own online store service like EAs Origin they lose some future mayor games and people will get sick to download 20 clients for 20 different games and that's worry me a little more, the prices are high for a digital buy, but only on launch if you wait a little you get some good discounts, that way you only fully support games you really really want at launch
