Valve's popular PC online platform Steam now has more than 100 million active accounts, which is up by 25 million from the 75 million figure announced in January. Valve revealed the new user figure today as part of a wider announcement of the major Steam Discovery update.

It is unclear how Valve defines "active" in the case of Steam users, but we've have followed up with Valve for further clarification. We'll update this story with anything we hear back.

Valve also announced today that there are now more than 3,700 total games on Steam. More than 1,300 games have been added so far in 2014, which is up substantially compared to last year when only 304 titles were added to Steam in the first nine months of the year.

For more on Steam's wide-ranging Steam Discovery update, which introduces a range of features and functionality aimed at helping you filter through the flood of new releases, be sure to read GameSpot's interview with Valve about it.

Well just FYI, since 2013, steam officially opened to mobile, school, and Linux. the most played game on steam is DOAT2, which has a mere 790,600 player base and no more than 300,000 ppl playing at once. meaning less than 1/10 players counts in any version COD from last gen 360/ps3. games like counter strike is like ultra high end graphic for average steam players, So.... you get the picture.

That individual games on consoles, although CoD is multiplat to PC as well, outnumber even the most played games on PC. Of course, this doesn't count games like Candy Crush and Flappy Bird which crushed everyone. :D

You are uninformed. My first statement pc revenue is higher:

<< LINK REMOVED >>

Second statement more people play on pc than on any other platforms combined:

<< LINK REMOVED >>

Thanks to digital on consoles? What a joke, More than 90% of pc gamers buy digital less than 30% on console. Have you ever seen a used console for sale ad? How many games included? Very few and thats exactly my point. I bought 250 titles last year digital i dont represent pc gamers in general yet you pretend like you do.

<< LINK REMOVED >>

No that was not the point, Would have mentioned other games then. Point was the amount of number playing has absolutely (might be hard for you and the initiator of this discussion to believe) nothing to do with how well a game sells or how profitable it is. Look at civ series 20-30 million or something like that how many players on steam? Not that many. You might be interested in knowing that out of all games owned on steam 37% have not been played at all. So you see the problem of posting bs like this and twisting numbers? Facts remain. Lets remember also, steam is not the only platform for pc gaming, battle net is huge and i doubt many asian players play on either of those. Sorry but you dont know what you are talking about. @xisiuizado @turianshepard @GameFan1983 PC has more people playing on it than the other platforms combined, including mobile according to microsoft. And pc revenue is higher. Many pc gamers have 200+ games in their library. Its not like on console where people buy 5 games during its fife span and replay them 12 times and what they love most is alternative endings. Dayz sold more than 2million and Arma 3 more than 1 million. Yet how many concurrent players on steam? Exactly...that number matters not,

That's completely untrue. Even if every Wii sold was only played by one person apiece, its install base is still greater than the number of Steam accounts on its own.

As for games owned, thanks to digital on consoles, many of us have over 100 titles as well. I have over 150 on the X360. :)

I wouldn't use franchises with sales in the 1-2 mil range for proof of superiority. I'll just post a few here:

Mario Kart Wii - 35.5 million
GTA 5 - 34 million

CoD MW2 - 28.5 Million

The list of games on consoles, and multiplat with CoD, that's over 2 mil is nearly endless.

"You are uninformed. My first statement pc revenue is higher"

I didn't dispute that, as it is a well known fact. The f2p games that have huge followings are highly profitable.

"That's completely untrue."

Referred to PC gaming having a larger audience. Yes, there are more PCs, but far fewer of them are used for any significant amount of gaming, unless we add in facebook and mobile-esque gamers.

"More than 90% of pc gamers buy digital less than 30% on console."

I replied that "MANY" of us do, not all. You cannot deny that 30% is a large percentage of total sales, especially considering how digital was almost non-existent for half of the console generation.

Ugh, yes, the number of people playing a game at any given time is related to the total number of sales. Obviously, there are many factors to consider, but the number of players is quite important. Also, obviously Steam <> PC gaming. However, the article is about Steam and too many people equate their account numbers too directly to PC gaming's overall health/profitability/etc.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes then we agree pc is dominating the field, but its not only f2p. Serveral titles sell better on pc and it has genres that bring revenue that the consoles are lacking pretty much, Such as mobas, mmos, strategy, simulator, early access titles where players can be part of development.

Maybe you should have read some of them links. 51% of all time spent gaming is on PCs - more than on consoles and mobile devices combined," according to Microsoft. Care to explain how that goes with your logic?

Well, maybe you should have read the link again. 30% is not the amount of total sales its the amount of console gamers that have ever bought a digital game copy. Its a small amount of the total pop, So most of you do not. "MANY" is in fact false.

You will never understand. 40% of steams purchased games not touched at all likely a higher amount because many just tinker with settings like i have and optimize them at purchase. You cant put an equaliser with people playing and games sold that is crazy. And if you look at the steam current players and know the sale stats published by devs you would know why.

No, we don't agree. Consoles dominate standard release numbers. Period.
"Such as mobas, mmos, strategy, simulator, early access titles"

Most MOBAs, MMOs, and Strategy titles are f2p. Early access purchases are idiotic. Who buys a games before it's finished? O.o

"according to Microsoft." There's my explanation. People who pay games on Facebook on PCs are PC gamers. That SERIOUSLY boosts PC numbers, just like that more casual gaming audience boosted the Wii.

Many is not false. Nearly one out of every three bought a digital title. Also, does that count the GWG and PS+ digital games that are not purchased. Additionally, you didn't address the changes in digital on consoles that have led to increases year after year. We aren't too far from a majority buying games digitally on consoles as well.

"You will never understand."

I do, actually. Either go Intel + Nvidia or go home. Still, as a console AND PC gamer, if you have to fix or download anything to play 60% of your games, you are doing it wrong. You must be an AMD gamer. :D

Haha give it a rest. most people play fb games on their pads and smartphones and that number is included in the 49%. I would need a source that most fb games are played on pcs not phones and pads, But you will find none.

Even when the info was given to you you failed to grasp it, its funny. Ofcourse not, we are talking sales and revenue.

Fix what for what? No you are no pc gamer i can spot a lie, download something to play 60% of the games? What? Library is huge and available by clicking twice. If you are talking about game patches they are on console also nowadays and games autopatch. Drivers also autoupdate.

That statement is FROM YOU. Remember this:

"40% of steams purchased games not touched at all likely a higher amount because many just tinker with settings like i have and optimize them at purchase."

40% not touched = 60% touched. That number gets close to zero with Nvidia. Even as a PC gamer, you still estimated that only 40% of PC game software runs without issue. YOU SAID IT.

Finally, PC revenue is primarily comprised of f2p revenue. Blizzard helps with subscription revenue, however, since you insist on using worldwide numbers, you'll find that the VAST majority of revenue from games on PC comes from f2p purchases, not full pay to play sales.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes what i meant by that was you go into game settings put everything to max or you play for a little while on your machine to see how the framerate is and lower settings if needed.. I usually turn the graphic settings up when buying a game even before playing and steam will write last played that date. But it hasnt been played. So real amount of games not played likely higher than 40% although they are still sales. Just remember people playing doesnt equal sales or money made especially not on Steam with the high amount of never played games. I never commented on having problems with running the games at all, we are all fine and over 30fps here over at the pc crowd. You would actually believe that someone struggle to play 40% of their pc games - And call yourself a pc gamer, LIAR shame on you!

No f2p is not the vast majority of pc revenue . Its profitable especially dota2 and lol but the rest of pc gaming is more so. Give me a link or be quiet.

I game on both consoles and PC, so I hope nobody takes this the wrong way as some "master racer" bs. But I really do want to see PC keep rising. Consoles used to be special for having tons of exclusive content. They also used to support couch co-op, and PS had free online (like PC). But now, more and more console games are also PC games, and couch co-op is so under-supported it virtually doesn't exist except for Nintendo's efforts. And of course gaming online now costs internet+PS+/XBL fees. And with backwards compatibility dying an ugly death... consoles are just losing most of what made them worthwhile relative to PCs. The biggest remaining thing is their low cost of entry, but of course then you still have the old "PC games are cheaper (and free to play online" rebuttal. And lastly, I don't want to pay for my games as a "service", so don't get me started on the initiatives in that direction.

All in all, I still have a place for consoles in my house, but it is shrinking. The onus is on Sony and MS to make their products valuable to consumers. My hope is that the growth of the PC as a platform will force Sony and MS to up their game. I still have my old consoles and handhelds to enjoy, regardless of what the future holds for this current gen of consoles.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are so many debates that go on with console gamers and with pc gamers, and in the end I think they all come down to preference and price. But the only one that I think that matters that makes me in the end wholeheartedly support pc gaming is backwards compatibility. Nintendo is all that is left out there from consoles to support previous gen games. And anything more than one gen back you have to purchase again from the Nintendo store. I love my pc because I have 600 games that will never expire on pc.

I have a disc from each version of windows if I need it to play old games, but I never do, my whole library keeps on working. Even old discs from the 90s, games like urban assault, age of empires 2, need for speed hot pursuit 3, still work. But on console I am in an odd financial predicament. I have a ps3 with about 10 games, and they are all games I love. But the ps3 was one of the fat originals that within the past year gave me the red light of no workum. So what do I do now? Do I go and buy a new but old and almost unsupported ps3 with no future so I can play my favorite exclusives, or do I buy a new ps4 for around the same price but yet have no games, and only one controller, all of which I would have to rebuy.

Even If I were to buy some of the remastered games like the last of us, It would be $40 on something I have already bought. If the new consoles had backwards compatibility I would own both an xbox one and a ps4 right now.

But what am I to do. Console gamers always talk about the high cost of pc gaming. But whats the cost of a new console 4 game controllers and 5 games? around 900 dollars, and that is only one console. I know you don't have to buy 4 controllers, or even buy these things new, because the price of used is a lot cheaper. I had 4 controllers when my ps3 went down, so If I want the same experience on the new gen I have to start spending continuously. and that's only if I choose one console over the other. If I get both, I'm easily racking up the cost.

But my ps3 controllers are not being wasted right now, I have them wirelessly hooked up to my pc while I play gang beasts with my family.

WRONG. Yesterday, a Nintendo fan was spouting the same point, but, as with many things, it's marketing hogwash. I posted a link to Co-Optimus for the other commenter which, once filtered for local co-op only, returned eleven pages for over 200 results on the X360. Heck, I'll do it again, just for fun. :D

<< LINK REMOVED >>

As for PC gaming making a comeback, keep in mind that tablets and phones are overrunning all other gaming platforms. We're not too far from gaming PCs and consoles from being niche devices, even more so than now.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Firstly, thanks for sharing that link. It's a cool reference for gamers (like myself) who enjoy co-op experiences.

But to clear things up, I'm not being a Nintendo fanboy, I'm simply not under the same perception as you. For example, that list of 114 couch-coop and splitscreen titles (not sure where you got over 200 from), 5 of them are CoD, 3 are Army of Two, 4 are Gears of War, 4 are Ghost Recon, 5 are Halos, 6 are Guitar Heros, lord knows how many dance games... I mean it's mostly a bunch of sequels of the same games padding the list. It doesn't take away from your point, that there are many hours to be spent on couch co-op on consoles, but

1) this is not reflective of the current gen, which is what my tirade is about (where gaming is going)

2) it's not exactly diverse or inspiring

Yeah, mobile is taking over. That's a bad thing from my perspective. But PC gaming is still making a surge... not sure how you see mobile gaming as disproving that.

Anyway, my post was really trying not to make this a fanboy issue - hopefully you can see I'm not trashing your 360 or whatever. I'm just not happy with the direction console games are taking, not critiquing where they have been (360/PS3 and before)

Oh, and you're quite welcome. I found Co-Optimus since I was worried about losing the local co-op for which Nintendo is famous when I decided to sell my Wii for an X360. It's a great resource and it completely alleviated any fears I had of moving to the 360. Thanks to it, my first four games were all local co-op! (Gears 1/2 pack, Peggle, PvZ, and Borderlands!)

Have a great week and Happy Gaming! :)

ACK...
I forgot to post the XBLA list. It's the 200+ one. The previous link is for full retail games. I'm sorry for the confusion. :(
<< LINK REMOVED >>

I didn't think you're a Nintendo fanboy. A fan, since, frankly almost all of us are, but not a fanatic. However, I do believe too many people, you included, take Nintendo's local co-op reign as a given fact, when it is not the reality.

1)Current gen is just getting started, however, the X1 has 32 couch co-op games already, many of which are couch + online like Mario Kart Wii.

2) The full retail list is pretty diverse. You eliminated three genres as undiverse, however, they were the most popular and, thus, were made in abundance.

2a) My apologies again, but the XBLA list I meant to post, has the variety you seek. FPS, TPS, platformers, tower defense, action/adventures, RPGs, JRPGs, etc. can all be found and played with a friend or spouse on the couch! :)

Mobile gaming is having an impact on all gaming platforms, which was my point. As companies switch resources to the more profitable mobile games, fewer PC and console games will be produced as they were previously.

Nope, I didn't take it as an attack, but as an opportunity to educate. The 360/PS3 have what the X1/PS4 will have, as evidenced by the number of X1 couch co-op titles already available in about a year. Thirty-two is barely more than two per month, but it's something and will gain speed as the new consoles reach more homes. :)

To run Destiny or whatever as splitscreen something's simply gotta give, and part of devs' reticence to bother with splitscreen might also be because these days people flip a sh!t when the console isn't 1080p 60fps (which it rarely is). But I agree, money is probably a big (or possibly bigger) part of it.

@pongley @xantufrog splitscreen has nothing to do with broadband. But, regardless, I wasn't attributing those things going away to PC games. I'm just saying that they are going away (for whatever reasons), and they are some of the things that set the console experience apart

Wonder how many of those 25 million were due to people setting up an extra account so they can share their library via steam share. I added an extra 2 just to get the damn thing working.

Let's assume everyone did that once, that's still up 12.5 million.

Good for them. The way things are going with Sony and MS moving on to those bullshit anti-consumer, streaming services, I may just stick with Steam and Nintendo for the future.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ya, the day streaming becomes the norm, I'll officially retire from this hobby. Streaming will be the last straw for me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't blame you, but MS has always been anti-consumer. Arsonist consoles. Online multiplayer fees. Trying to lock PC users into Windows 8 instead of making it easier for them to switch to GNU/Linux when they feel like they want to change. Trying to make it so you can't eject USB drives as easily or run Live boots from them, etc.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Let's not forget Activision and Sony though. They also had a part in this. Sony proved last gen that they can do as they please without any repercussions. They had info stolen, removed a console feature, and changed account sharing from five to two.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I didn't use a credit card on PSN. I've always been a little paranoid about that kind of thing since my mom left behind a lot of debt for my grand parents when she died. They probably could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they didn't bother with the R&D of OtherOS. As for account sharing, I wasn't a huge fan of that myself. However, there was a point where I believed they would have reduced digital prices by 50% to somewhat reflect the changes and promote digital sales.
