Street Fighter 5's Toned Down Focus on Female Bodies "Not Due to External Pressure"

Producer Yoshinori Ono says changes were flagged internally.

Street Fighter 5 producer Yoshinori Ono has discussed Capcom's decisions to de-emphasise the focus on female bodies, saying the change wasn't a result of external pressures.

Speaking to UOL Jogos, Ono explained aspects of the game such as R.Mika's Critical Art and Cammy's entrance, which were scrutinised for the attention paid to the female characters' bodies, were also flagged internally at Capcom.

"We didn't make any changes due to external influences," he said. "These changes came up internally. We decided to remove [the animations] because we want as many people to play as possible, and we do not want something that might make someone uncomfortable."

In early versions of the the Street Fighter 5 beta R. Mika, a female wrestler, was shown slapping her rear when executing her Critical Art. After the update, her behind isn't in frame when she slaps it.

Cammy, meanwhile, is now framed so that her behind is also out of shot during her entrance animation. Previously it was in-shot, and the camera was low enough so that her crotch area could clearly be seen. A comparison of both animations, before and after the changes, can be seen here.

In the interview, Ono continued to say Capcom wants "professional players and casual fans [to come back] again" for the new game, but to also "reach those who never even played a fighting game."

He continued: "There cannot be something [in the game] that makes people think, 'this is not acceptable.' We probably won't be able to remove everything that might offend someone, but our goal is to at least reduce that number as much as possible to think 'okay, there's this issue here, but its within the limits.' We want everyone to play and enjoy [the game] without worrying about anything else."

Capcom has announced a new beta test period for Street Fighter 5 which will begin on December 18. The beta will be available on PlayStation 4 and PC.

The Street Fighter 5 release date has been confirmed as February 16, 2016. During PlayStation Experience 2015, Capcom revealed the final launch character is Fang, a character that uses poison attacks.

Following launch, Alex, Guile, Ibuki, Balrog, Juri, and Urien will be released as new characters. Each one is earnable through gameplay for free. Those that want to get them immediately can purchase the 2016 Season Pass, which is available to pre-purchase now in North America.

People will always find a reason for offense. You could be sitting alone in a dark room for the rest of your life and someone will still have a problem with it.

Forget this sexuality controversy. The current art style of both men and women in street fighter has gotten too weird. They are all caricatures now.

So it's okay for a half negat man to walk around fighting in a thong (Urien), but it's now okay for a woman to show off a little ass before a fight. That's crazy lol Being that I play SF for the gameplay, I will not be cancelling my preorder, but this is so one sided.

@meharu: I agree, but I preordered it because I actually like the game as a whole. SF is about matching your wits against either AI or anther player to see who comes out on top. In short, I'm in it for the fight. While a little censorship may discourage some...but as long as the core gameplay hasn't changed, I'm all in.

you are not fooling anyone here mr ono. its pretty obvious you were pressured by outside sources and every gamer knows it. the crappy DLC character lineup was bad enough, but to challenge our intelligence like that is the real offensive insult. just admit that those outside sources and others pulled your development team's leg and was forced to do the censors and move on. its not the first time a gaming company was forced to do censors from outside sources and it wont be the last.

Well. I have no trouble believing Capcom does want more players. They chose to remove something that they feel might turn off potential players. Doubtful they believe it would have been a lot of players but a little might be worth their time. I donno.

They say it wasn't external, but these days, even if it was mostly internal I just don't think most people will see it that way. If they never included these things in the first place, people wouldn't even miss them or feel like they were being taken away.

I guess Ono at least acknowledges that he isn't going to be able to remove every element that's going to offend someone . . .

@Wolfkcing:

the only people that find those elements offending are anti gamers like that lawyer and parental advocate groups that want to keep every game kid friendly.

probably the reason why there are some people that would just import the japaneese version of some games cause their not edited unless their region locked.

Yeah because we all know the huge market section that SJWs are... oh wait, they are an irrelevant group that has no interest at all in Street Fighter.

So all that whining from the GamerGate anti-"censorship" crowd blaming this on feminists or 'SJWs' was completely wrong.

I'd say I was shocked, but then I'd be lying.

The game hasn't even been released. Of course Capcom is fine-turning it's marketing strategies and of course they want to develop a robust player base, just as they did with SFIV.

The FGC is generally a pretty cool group of people. I guess if anyone out there is outraged and feels deprived of an animated butt-slap... don't buy the game.

If SF would only come out in Japan they would have done the opposite, they would have increased the sex appeal. Most of them have no problem internally with it, it's the problem of external forces that makes them do these changes internally, they have a reputation to uphold to whatever that is, they don't want any moms with overinflated defense mechanisms or any other morons coming at them.

Also don't worry StudioFow will show how it's properly done internally. XD

Capcom lies and contradict themselves with what they say... feminism is one of the problems here and is ridiculous! BUT the real problem I see is that they shouldn't have put those camera angles in the first place. No one would have noticed it and this wouldn't be happening... maybe, I think.

How is it fair them censoring Mika smacking her rear on camera because it offends females but it's OK to have Urien running around in a g-string shaking his package all over the screen since they don't care what males think. The only explanation is that Capcom is afraid of the feminazis.

This only shows that the feminazis have infiltrated gaming studios to further their vile agendas, just like the communists infiltrated USA during the Cold War.

But we have no proof that any communists infiltrated USA during the Cold War, so it isn't likely that feminazis have infiltrated Capcom either.

In either case, the fighting genre is the worst offender when it comes to sexualising women, so them toning things down isn't a monumental shift. It's a small step in the right direction, but nothing outrageous, so everyone can relax (if they're at all able to do so).

AKA "Your standard sugarcoated PR"
Come now - no video gaming company is going to be honest about this though I kinda wish every single company out there would give SJWs the "George Kamitani-styled" treatment.

Either way, I'm not too bothered by this particular change - it's just the camera angle and the character models seems to be untouched.
Shame about Cammy though - the new camera angle regarding her entree seems less badass now - the side-view landing looks pretty awkward.

They haven't changed any character proportions, any animations, etc. Mika still slaps her own bare ass before doing her “Ultra” or whatever it’s called in this version. The change is that the camera no longer zooms in on her ass cheek first. Cammy’s entrance animation and outfit are exactly the same. The difference is that the camera doesn’t linger on her crotch during her entrance.

Believe it or not, women play fighting games too. Some of the best DOA players I have ever played were women. Stuff like some of the camera angles they changed from the early versions of SF5 would have been over the top even for the DOA series.

IMO, There's nothing more beautiful or mesmerizing than the female form. And that holds true without the need for exaggerated and unrealistic representations of it. This "fan service" merely plays on the primal male sex drive; something advertisers and media have relied on as an "easy sell" because of high success rate.
