Super Mario Bros. actor Bob Hoskins dies

British actor Bob Hoskins passes away at 71.

Super Mario Bros. movie actor Bob Hoskins died this week after being hospitalized with pneumonia, his publicist confirmed to The Chicago Tribune today. He was 71.

No Caption Provided

Hoskins rose to prominence through movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, but gamers know him best as the man who played Mario in 1993's infamous Super Mario Bros. In a 2007 interview, Hoskins recalled what a trainwreck the Super Mario Bros. movie was.

"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a f**kin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F**kin' nightmare. F**kin' idiots."

Hoskins was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 for Mona Lisa. He has appeared in dozens of films, the most recent of which was 2012's Snow White And The Huntsman. Hoskins retired from acting in 2012, explaining at the time that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease.

@Deadlysyns87 @mattcakeyou realize "cult following" just means no one likes it except for a handful of morons? Everything from the holocaust to the leprechaun movies has a cult following....

<< LINK REMOVED >>, Mario's creator stated, "[In] the end, it was a very fun project that they put a lot of effort into," but also said, "The one thing that I still have some regrets about is that the movie may have tried to get a little too close to what the Mario Bros. video games were. And in that sense, it became a movie that was about a video game, rather than being an entertaining movie in and of itself."

the man himself,... he gets it. you don't base a movie's setting on a game's and make the movie like the game; that'll make a shiste movie. you base the movie on the setting in the game and you make the movie different then the game. simple. God.

"Super Mario actor" have some respect video game site or not there is no excuse most people know him best for "Who frame Roger rabbit", not super Mario brothers and film connoisseurs know him best for "The Long Good Friday" an awesome performance, one of many from a brilliant actor and genuinely and thoroughly decent human being ! Rest in peace Bob

@de-astroturfer The excuse would probably be that this is a video game site and explaining why his death is news here requires making the connection that he acted in the Super Mario movie, otherwise a bunch of folks would be in here complaining about non-gaming news on a game site.

Not like the article tramples all over him. Mentions his nomination for an Oscar and stated he appeared in dozens of other films.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Fair point I guess Im just annoyed that other sites such as IGN are doing the same, which is both a gaming and a movies site. and it could be argued Gamespot is too with its recent star wars episode 7 coverage

Bob Hoskins was an excellent actor, and delivered many great performances. My sons loved him in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and I will always remember him for The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa.

On a side note, it's painful seeing his name shackled to that abomination Super Mario Bros. by this headline. :/

R.I.P. Mr. Hoskins.

While this is definitely sad news, I'm sure Super Mario Bros. is one of the LAST films Hoskins wishes to be remembered by.

I remember reading an article that Bob Hoskins regretted doing Super Mario Bros. Movie, it was the worst job he ever did in his career. If it was all about the Money, It's understandable.
