Super Street Fighter IV ships 1 million, series ships 29 million

Capcom expects latest PS3, 360 installment in fighting series to go platinum as game launches in EU just days after US launch; franchise hits new console shipment milestone.

Super Street Fighter IV launched in North America on Tuesday, in Japan Wednesday, and the UK and Europe today. And while it's early days yet, Capcom is confident the game's glowing reviews will make it a best seller along the lines of 2009's Street Fighter IV, which shipped over 2 million copies within a week of its launch. That game helped the Japanese publisher hit nearly $1 billion in annual sales during its last fiscal year.

Capcom is adopting an aggressive SSFIV shipment strategy.
Capcom is adopting an aggressive SSFIV shipment strategy.

In preparation, Capcom today announced it has already shipped 1 million units of Super Street Fighter IV to retailers worldwide. The figure puts lifetime shipment figures for console Street Fighter games at 29 million units internationally, since, as of March 31, the series had already shipped 28 million units, according to Capcom. The series started in 1987 with the arcade original and will continue with the arcade version of Super Street Fighter IV, which was just announced for the Japanese market.

Much like Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter IV takes a preexisting game, in this case Street Fighter IV, and remixes it primarily by adding new characters. Super II veterans T. Hawk and Dee Jay make their return to the series and Korean tae kwon do expert Juri appear for the first time. Other familiar faces include Cody, Guy, and Adon from the Street Fighter Alpha series (and Final Fight, in the case of Cody and Guy).

In addition to extra fighters, Capcom's newest double dip will feature new ultracombos for every character, enhanced online play, balancing tweaks, and more. For more on Super Street Fighter IV, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

crabapple87 Posted Apr 30, 2010 5:23 pm PT "i love this game but i suck hard at it. I have a question, do fighting sticks make fighting games feel somewhat easier?" Good sir, as an excellent mouse + keyboard rocks for FPS, as a superbly-tuned racing wheel owns for driving games, as stock controllers excel in action-adventure games... for Fighting games, an excellent arcade stick or 3-over-3 gamepad instantly and profoundly improves one's experience in the genre. So: yes. You'll play better and enjoy it more by using an interface that is dedicated to the gameplay form. Games have been this way for a long time, letting players personalize their choice of controller on a per game basis--decidedly a reflection of comfort and performance benefits.

Capcom did it again. Another successful continuation to the SF series. Midnight release was crazy in my town. There was around 50 people at gamestop which is good for a fighter. At least one company understands how effective more for less can be.

Why are there news stories about how many copies of a game were sent out to retailers? I'm more interested in knowing how many copies were actually sold.

Lamprey263, this would be absolutely the perfect time to get the game, you definitely didn't have to play street fighter 4 to enjoy this one, practically the contrary. Plus the price tag makes it easily more than worth the price. If you want a street fighter game this is an awesome deal.

I don't know if I should get this SFIV since I didn't get the last one, or should I just wait another year for the Super SF IV Turbo or Hyper SF IV or whatever it's gonna be called. But at least it's $40, they weighs in heavily, maybe I'll pick this one up.

If BlazBlue can do it, so can SSF4 with 10 additional characters + modes for $40.

all DLC purchased on SFIV is transfered to SSFIV, so no DLC is obsolete. The game is a big improvement, and if you really want something to do with the old one, give it to a friend and spread the word of fighting games. You may think of this as a silly thing to do as you get no credit to buying it, but passing your old SFIV to somebody will allow them to feel the same way you felt, and will earn you more potential opponents in SSFIV. its funny people are speaking about there being another incarnation of the SFIV saga even after capcom NOTED that this is the farthest they are going with SFIV. Also, if you call adding all characters that players requested for to be in SFIV after it came out as 'milking', then yes, Capcom did their fans justice by giving them better online options, most of the characters they wanted, an easier way to get titles/icons and colors, and balancing characters at a reduced price of a normal game. to all the people who think this could have been DLC, you obviously haven't played it. To everyone who still feels bad they shoveled cash into SFIV and not SSFIV exclusively, try to remember that there couldn't be a Super without a normal. This game is a 9.6 in my book, with SFIV being a 9.0

DLC costumes from SFIV carry over. I don't begrudge buying the original, I've had a year of play out of it, on and off. I'm not even that serious a player but I got more out of it than most games. For the extra content alone SSFIV's price tag seems a lot better than the going rate for DLC. While it's an awesome deal for new players the SF fans are bound to get more out of it in pure play hours.

it does suck for those who bought the original, since it is obsolete now, as well as any dlc purchased for it...that is a problem which i think everyone can agree with (unless you just like throwing money away). too bad you can't get credit for any of that stuff.

If you played the first game for 5-10 hours then don't even bother buying this, and do not complain about milking. This is for SF fans, people who played the first one regularly. It was worth 60 bucks back then, the new version is easily worth another 40 bucks now.

Unlike alot of Companys *cough* Activision, Capcom care about there games and fanbase. Look at Resident evil 5 on the PC. That''s one of the best Ports in video game history. On a side note i would love for a Capcom vs Namco game.. Ahh the dreams of pitting Seigfried against Chris Refield.

@ Fightingfan Because most of these guys, like the two posts below yours, indicate how ignorant people are when it comes to fighting games. Companies do the same thing with FPS's but people are foolish enough to buy them again...AT FULL PRICE. At least with fighting games, we usually get a discount with new content and major gameplay tweaks to fix flawed elements of the game

Why are people complaing? 10 new characters, new stages, new music, better online. EA doesn't do half of that and you don't complain about their sports games.

I feel ripped off especially when I bought the original SF4 for 60 bucks, It sucks that owners of the SF4 game dont get a discount for it. Hopefully they give the original owners a sweet deal on DLC and by sweet deal I mean Free and by DLC I mean the bonus characters.

@ thorsen-ink It's fine, I understand. It threw me off a bit, but I know that it happens especially when referring to two similar things. Just for people like me I re-read it and thought about it cause I thought I was reading it wrong or didn't know something. It happens and I'm glad you fixed it.

Just cause you dislike Fighting games Shadow_Fire41...then it doesn't mean it's overrated... You can basicly only call something overrated if you have other comparable stuff to compare it to.
