Switch Online Will Apparently Delete Your Cloud Saves When Your Subscription Ends

Don't forget to pay, or you might lose your game saves.

Although the much-requested cloud saves system is coming to Switch, there's apparently a pretty big catch. If you ever stop paying for an online subscription for your Switch, Nintendo won't hold on to your save data and it will be deleted.

According to an FAQ page on Nintendo's website, "Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership." Nintendo then adds that if you keep your save data stored "locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership."

So if you do buy a subscription, it might be in your best interest to also keep your most important game data saved on your console because if there's ever a problem with your subscription payment, you'll probably lose your saves. It's also worth noting that not all games will support cloud saves--like Pokemon, Let's Go Pikachu!/Eevee and Splatoon 2--so depending on what you play, you might not be able to completely rely on Nintendo's online storage to begin with.

Nintendo's online membership can be continuously maintained through automatic renewal. All subscriptions will renew automatically unless you select the "Terminate Automatic Renewal" choice in the Account Information settings. Renewal rates are determined by your latest online membership purchase. If you buy a three month membership and then buy one for 12 months, your account will automatically renew every 12 months.

The FAQ page details a few other clarifications from the other services that relate to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you're playing in an online party with a group who's using voice chat, you won't be automatically added to the voice chat group. You'll be asked beforehand whether or not you want to participate in the group's voice chat when you first join the party. Also, you'll only need one online membership for your family of Switch consoles provided all of your consoles are linked to the same account.

As I was already saying was the case, this article has been proven wrong definitively. Nintendo has now officially gone on record saying your cloud saves are kept for a guaranteed 6 months after your sub ends. Just like PSN.

This is on the Nintendo Support service page for Switch Online:

"We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended."

I just called the Nintendo Switch Online Support center and the representative I spoke with said that they've been instructed to inform customers that while they're not ready to announce the exact duration of time that they keep saved data, they can guarantee that even if your subscription is lapsed for a month, your data will still be guaranteed at the minimum.

This is what Nintendo has REALLY said about cloud saves:

"We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended."

They don't say how long, but your cloud saves are NOT deleted right away. They're kept for an "extended period of time" after your membership ends. Someone should ask Nintendo how long that is. The nonsense GameSpot was saying about being able to use your own local data again after resubscribing was SPECIFICALLY and EXCLUSIVELY talking about the NES app saved game states and game data. They hacked up the quote and took out the part that said that.

Also, for anyone who wants to see for themselves Nintendo's official stance on this:

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/22521/~/nintendo-switch-online-service-faq

It's under Save Data Cloud Backup.

It's $20/year. Suck it up - it's less than half the price of other services.

@wookietim: $20 for now at least. Don't you worry it will raise up if there's alot of people subscribing. (Though I highly doubt alot of people will stick around compared to XBL,PSN and PC)

@Deltath: For one, I don't game online that much anyway. Even more so, I don't want to have to keep up with the file management...i.e. what's on the console vs what's on the cloud. Also, I don't want to risk losing my 90hr RPGs saves if there's any sort of problem or lapse in my subscription. The benefit of cloud saves for me was to serve as a back up and to make my saves available on other consoles (friends consoles or even new consoles). For example, if my Xbox One dies, or I sell it to get an XBox One X, I won't have to worry about transferring save files.

Short answer, I was already on the fence and this feature is no longer a selling point in my opinion.

@lionheartssj1: Makes sense. All of it. I will say this, though, the reporting in this article isn't accurate, to my knowledge. The kind of hacked up some of the quotes and twisted the meaning. The quotes they used were taken from a section about whether or not the save data from the NES games are stored locally or on the cloud. It's both. Anyway, this is what their official service page in the US says:

"We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory."

That says that they definitely keep them for an extended period after your membership ends, but that they can't be guaranteed beyond that. Which is how most cloud services work. The only real question is how long is an "extended period". I'd say a minimum of a month to as long as a year. No way of knowing without asking Nintendo.

@Deltath: It charges for things other people or Nintendo have provided for free. It provides negative value. And with policies like this, the features are actively harmful.

@Thanatos2k: Every console maker charges for online. And Sony charges for cloud saves, meaning that two out of the three charge for that. And Nintendo Switch Online has always been a paid service. Months before the system even launched, this was made clear to consumers. It's a perk that it had such a long grace period, not a negative.

And the idea of negative value here doesn't make sense. It literally provides services that you otherwise don't have access to. To provide negative value, current Switch gamers who DON'T have Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions today would have to have access to more features than people who DO have subscriptions. And subscribing would have to actually take them away, not give them.

Finally, this article is also false anyway. Nintendo's own online support page says that save data is kept for an extended period of time after the service elapses. I contacted customer support and they've confirmed that while Nintendo isn't ready to say exactly how long that period is, that they're cucurrently guaranteeing at least a month after your sub ends, they'll still have the data.

@Deltath: "Every console maker charges for online"

Nintendo didn't. Now they do. Now they suck. PC doesn't.

"And Sony charges for cloud save"

Microsoft doesn't. Sony also doesn't delete them when you stop subscribing. So Nintendo sucks.

"And Nintendo Switch Online has always been a paid service"

"It literally provides services that you otherwise don't have access to."

That's so weird, I've been playing online for months with no problems.

"To provide negative value, current Switch gamers who DON'T have Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions today would have to have access to more features than people who DO have subscriptions"

One week ago, people who didn't have Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions had access to more features than people who have don't have subscriptions now. So negative value has been achieved - you're out some money to have the same functionality for no reason.

Also, spare us your Nintendo defense of "Well I called them and they said" - even if you're telling the truth (unlikely) some customer service rep in a call center has no idea what is actually going to happen and their words are meaningless.

@Thanatos2k: PC isn't a console and isn't a closed ecosystem and doesn't have one company running all the online games. And a lot of services do charge. Also, Sony and Microsoft used to not charge for online. How is that a reason to bitch? This stuff isn't free. They eventually have to charge or it's not worth it to run. And Sony DOES delete cloud saves. After 6 months of not subscribing.

And the negative value argument also doesn't mean anything because you said it offers negative value now. It literally doesn't matter if it was free a week ago. It's not now and if you want to get the many features it offers, you have to pay and it literally, by definition, gives features you can't otherwise have. It also gives a lot more than just access to online.

I don't understand your stance. Based on everything you've said, your only real argument is you shouldn't have to pay because you didn't have to before. Are you legitimately saying if you'd had to pay from day one, you'd be happier? Because they could have easily done that. But instead decided to give people a grace period, which saved customers money. And so we should hate Nintendo for that?

And forget what the customer service rep says, Nintendo's own service page for their online service. And if we can't trust that, then why are you trusting a hacked up misquote from an infrequently updated Nintendo UK FAQ?

@Deltath: "and doesn't have one company running all the online games"

Nintendo isn't running them all either. You do know that, right?

"And a lot of services do charge"

Some people don't even subscribe to them to play online, but for the games offered regularly. Nintendo's offering? Limited NES games that require always online DRM. Worse than that 15 year old emulator on your laptop. Negative value.

"They eventually have to charge or it's not worth it to run."

No they don't have to. Nintendo has been doing it for over a decade. PC has been doing it for forever. They're doing it because they think they can get away with it. It's pathetic that you're fine with it, having been conditioned by other bad companies doing it too. Like microtransactions.

"It literally doesn't matter if it was free a week ago"

You can say stuff, but that doesn't make it true. That's exactly what matters, and exactly why it's negative value. You seem to be deluded into thinking Nintendo "has" to do this. No. No they don't. And you shouldn't be thanking them for not charging as much as other bad companies.

Wow, I love Switch but seriously **** you Nintendo your online service is a complete joke.

It pisses me off enough that you can't cloud backup/restore on PS without a sub, but even they don't actually delete the bloody things, not to mention they work in all games too, and local backup is free out the gate.

Just because something is cheap, does not make it fine that it's shit. If two stores opened up on your street selling steaming hot turds, and one was cheaper than the other, you still ain't buying a turd with your paycheck.

@risingdawn: An actual physical turd has no use or value. Playing online, having cloud saves, deals and discounts and an NES library with online added has a lot of value to a lot of people.

Also, you should read my other comment here for more info, but the gist is this article is lying. Or at least misinformed. PlayStation DOES delete their save backups. 100%. They delete them after 6 months. Nintendo also does NOT delete them right away like this article leads you to believe. They specifically say they delete it "after an extended period of time passed when your subscription ends". They haven't said how long a time. Just that it's an "extended period". Could be a month or six or a year.

Also, they weren't touting local saves as a feature. The article hacked up the actual quote. The original line is referring to the NES app saved state data. For clarification purposes, they said that even though you can't play the NES games after your sub ends, that the data is still stored in the cloud and locally and when your sub continues, you can pick up where you left off. The article clipped out the beginning and end of that quote to make it seem like they were talking about cloud saves in general.

Doesn't everyone rely on local storage anyway as their primary means of saving gameplay? Cloud saves are just backups. You can't even control any of your cloud save data on the Xbox. It just automatically overwrites itself even if you have multiple saves locally. So you never actually know what and when the saves were made on the Xbox. The PS4 will backup multiple game saves of the same game and you can choose what to upload or redownload.

Don't think this is really a big deal as people were getting along just fine without it. Just don't delete any saves locally. The cloud is a backup just in case.

@Vodoo: I agree even though I save my games locally as much as I can. I do not put my faith in the cloud. As time goes on and the cloud evolves more companies will be moving to an paid cloud and some companies do charge to use thier cloud, it is another type of service that can create income for them. It is one big server in the sky(figuratively talking) that connects to actual servers. While it does suck and they did offer it for free as thier online services was free before Switch, Nintendo saw a way they could increase thier revenue and they took that risk. Many may complain but Nintendo will still come out ahead as long as folks use the service. Guess the saying Things that were free today, may not be free tomorrow.

But what u can't get back is time u put into a game . Like the Witcher 3 or fallout 4 or Zelda . Not if it just breaks what if u want to play on another system in your house with cloud saves u pick up where u left off . So it is very important. And any hobby gaming stamp collection painting is never a waste of time if it's something u enjoy . And if u feel gaming is a waste of time why are u on a gaming site lmao fraud
