Switch Online Will Apparently Delete Your Cloud Saves When Your Subscription Ends

Don't forget to pay, or you might lose your game saves.

Although the much-requested cloud saves system is coming to Switch, there's apparently a pretty big catch. If you ever stop paying for an online subscription for your Switch, Nintendo won't hold on to your save data and it will be deleted.

According to an FAQ page on Nintendo's website, "Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership." Nintendo then adds that if you keep your save data stored "locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership."

So if you do buy a subscription, it might be in your best interest to also keep your most important game data saved on your console because if there's ever a problem with your subscription payment, you'll probably lose your saves. It's also worth noting that not all games will support cloud saves--like Pokemon, Let's Go Pikachu!/Eevee and Splatoon 2--so depending on what you play, you might not be able to completely rely on Nintendo's online storage to begin with.

Nintendo's online membership can be continuously maintained through automatic renewal. All subscriptions will renew automatically unless you select the "Terminate Automatic Renewal" choice in the Account Information settings. Renewal rates are determined by your latest online membership purchase. If you buy a three month membership and then buy one for 12 months, your account will automatically renew every 12 months.

The FAQ page details a few other clarifications from the other services that relate to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you're playing in an online party with a group who's using voice chat, you won't be automatically added to the voice chat group. You'll be asked beforehand whether or not you want to participate in the group's voice chat when you first join the party. Also, you'll only need one online membership for your family of Switch consoles provided all of your consoles are linked to the same account.

Man, Nintendo's always good for a joke. They add a feature but make it completely useless unless you feel like subscribing to their service for life. Better not ever let your subscription run out or you'll lose all your saves.

@Atzenkiller: Yes, I know. But it's wrong. And I'm not just pulling that out of thin air. It's listed on the Nintendo Switch Online Service page and the service reps are all saying it. This site misquoted an FAQ from Nintendo UK. The official company stance is that saves are guaranteed for an extended period of time AFTER your sub ends, but beyond that they aren't guaranteed. When asked how long this "extended period of time" was, they will only say that it's at least a month after your sub ends but aren't ready to announce how long yet definitively.

Not saying it's great, but it's not the same thing as ending the second your sub drops.

@Deltath: Really, dude? So it's true after all but you felt like making a post just because they don't do it right away? Saying that it's at least a month makes it sound like they just give you enough time to resubscribe, in case you completely forgot about it, before deleting your saves as punishment so yeah, no difference.

@Atzenkiller: FYI, Nintendo made the announcement public today. They keep saves for six months, guaranteed. Just like PSN.

@Atzenkiller: Of course it's a difference. People are reporting all over the internet that if you forget for even a single minute or single day, your data is deleted. A month is a lot lot lot longer. Also, it could be even longer than that. And almost every company in the world deletes cloud data after a time for paid services. They can't legally be expected to keep it forever. If they made a claim like that, someone could sue them in 5 years if they ever decided to shut the servers down. FYI, Sony deletes your saves too after your sub ends.

This is what happens when a company run by people older than your grandparents finally discovers the internet twenty years after everyone else. You know the Nintendo IT department spends their days scraping postage stamps off of screens because executives keep sticking them on there every time they send emails.

@Thirdrail1: Hahaha, that's great imagery. And Nintendo is definitely a little trapped in the past. I think the Wii and Wii U era were a lot more evident of that. And I think they're making strides toward being more modern now. Also, this article isn't actually accurate anyway. They don't delete your cloud saves as soon as the sub ends.

@uubershikamarux: The only reason you could before is because they offered a grace period. It was announced before the Switch even launched that online was paid. It's really funny to me that people get offered a discount or a grace period or free trial, then get mad when the gravy train is over. Also, it offers a lot more than just online play anyway.

And this is why I hope future consoles never go digital. They shut down the servers one day and then what? Its not just the saves but games also we moving game data to external hdd's or sometimes replacing faulty hdds or consoles you get it digital and you want the game back in the future then what?

@Archangel2222: And then what? The servers for last gen games are still up. Not talking about online servers but as far as I'm aware you can still download any PS3 game from the PSN store. And if eventually the day comes when you can't then you'll be able to download it elsewhere and play it on an emulator. Yeah, digital only is so bad.

Wanna buy any of the dozens of PS3 games that I've still got lying around and don't feel like selling for a coupe bucks? Cause I've got no use for them, but being able to add them to a digital library so they don't take up space would be nice. Just in case I ever felt like playing any of them again on a PS3, which is not very likely considering that a majority of all PS3 games is getting rereleased for PS4 now.

@Archangel2222: Yeah that's why I will resist this streaming future as long as possible. The only reason they want people streaming games is for higher profits and less cost plus they will eventually cut off your access to the game.

Deal breaker. I've maintained a sub of some kind since college and in all that time I've forgotten to resub quite a few times. The original Xbox and PS4 in particular do a poor job of reminding you. I would have lost my saves.

Thankfully, I never use cloud saves, but this is a very real problem if you do.

@Barighm: You forgot to resub? I'm sure that wouldn't have been possible if you actually had a need for it. So I assume you were resubbing just because, whether you were actually using it or not.

I know Nintendo is not as rich as Sony or microsoft, but are they THAT poor they have to delete saves in their cloud servers once the subscriber drops the service for some time?

As for the saves, even the GameCube and the 2 Wiis allowed you to copy your saves as long as it wasn't an online game (fine, the GC had no internal storage, nor was it cartridge based, but the 2 Wiis still allowed us to do so). Nintendo took a few steps backward. I can somewhat understand the situation with the cloud servers (it's expensive), but them gluing the saves in their consoles seems weird.

The cartridges are not acting as memory cards anymore, and even with the N64, some games still required a memory card.

@CRAPCOM1926: Nintendo had playing cards exclusive to Japan, then they created consoles.

Microsoft has Windows which is the biggest PC OS ever. They also have Xbox (doesn't work quite well...).

Sony had music players, radios, TVs, cameras, and then went the console route (after a failed attempt at teaming up with Nintendo). They also have a movie branch, a software developing branch, and they create SD cards as well. Even if Nintendo is far from poor, they are quite small in comparison to them and the funds they have.

Both Microsoft and Sony can pump a little more resources into their gaming divisions if they feel like it could increase their overall profits, but Nintendo can't do that since they are not really anywhere else. They made a lot of money from the DS and the Wii, but they burned a lot of it with the Wii U. So they might not really have the funds to have top notch servers with a lot of space.

Pokémon Go's profits is shared between 3 parties (Niantic, Google, and of course Nintendo), and the rest of their mobile games don't seem to be big enough. FE:H works fine but doesn't seem to have Candy Crush's success (not casual enough).

In short, it's not because a company is very old it is super rich. Look at Google. It's relatively young, and became a monster that bought a lot of smaller companies over the years. Then we have Facebook as well.

@Bread_or_Decide: switch was hacked long ago through other means, so that is not a sound argument. sony and microsoft implemented the feature and it still took well over 3 years to hack those platforms... hacking is inevitable at some point anyways so it is foolish to think you could prevent it from ever happening and instead take away a feature that is deemed mandatory.

@Bread_or_Decide: For me, it's less a concern of "my Switch might break" and more a concern of "this game might have some kind of bug/glitch that renders my save unusable".

I've never had any of my systems break or fail...but I have had a few instances where an in-game issue caused my save to either be corrupted or stick me in a place where it is functionally useless. Until games stop having issues like Twilight Princess' "Cannon Room Glitch" or Skyward Sword's "Golo the Gamebreaker", I'd like the option to back up my save data locally.

I mean...local save backup is present on the 3DS, and even the Wii and Wii U allowed you to backup to an external device. Now, all of a sudden, Nintendo strips the feature out of fear of hacked consoles (while the Switch itself had a hardware exploit that allowed people to hack it).

@Bread_or_Decide: Meanwhile, I’ve had more dead cell issues with my GBC, DS, and WiiU than I’ve ever had with any smartphone I’ve ever owned.

Doesn’t the Switch have a bend issue with their system? I remember reading about it around launch but I’m not sure if they’ve addressed it.

@Bread_or_Decide: well, for one, i have heard many reports of switches overheating and warping -- which then caused the system to malfunction and require repair. in many of these cases, no save data could be retrieved and was lost. the chance that your system could break is reason enough to give people more options to backing up their data. as we have heard already, some games won't even support cloud saves so people are shit out of luck i guess.

@Xristophoros: "many reports"

You mean two people who create youtube video and start a hysteria. If this had been a real problem it would have been widely covered, reported, and nintendo would have issued a statement, which they haven't. Isolated incidents do not a problem make.

@Bread_or_Decide: Just because shit doesn't happen to you, doesn't mean it doesn't happen, get out of your damn bubble and realize you're not the center of the world, stop being so self centered, Quality of Life features should not be ignored that easily just because you have no reason to use it. If you don't want to use then don't fucking use it, but don't start talking that others should live by your example alone.
