Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Hands-On

The PlayStation 3's download service just got heavy with the release of the latest game in the Tekken series.

Though it isn't available on the US version of Sony's PlayStation Store just yet, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is now available for purchase in Hong Kong and Japan. No, we're not talking about another PSP download. This is the same fighting game that Namco put out on the PSP, but it's running on the PlayStation 3, with full support for widescreen and 1080p resolution. It appears to take after the arcade release, meaning there aren't many extra modes, but it's most certainly the same exciting game of Tekken that you've come to expect from Namco.

The download clocks in at over 800MB and is selling for around $16 in the Hong Kong store. What you get for that money appears to be an arcade-perfect conversion of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which is the upgrade to Tekken 5 that adds new characters and moves. The game offers single-player play, a versus mode, and a ghost battle mode. Like in the PSP version, you can take on computer-controlled fighters that are governed by ghosts, which are profiles based on how another human player plays the game. Dark Resurrection on the PSP had you manually uploading your own ghosts and downloading others. This PS3 release appears to grab new ghosts automatically. While you probably won't mistake the ghosts you'll fight for real human players, they tend to fight a lot better than the average fighting-game artificial intelligence, since you can "teach" these ghosts more elaborate combos and tricks.

All of the Tekken 5 fighters are here and immediately selectable. The new fighters--which aren't all that new anymore, since Tekken 5: DR has been out for a while now--are the returning Armor King, the Russian special forces operative Dragunov, and the rich girl who fights for laughs, Lili. New to this PS3 release is a playable version of Jinpachi, the game's final boss. Jinpachi unlocks after you beat the arcade mode and plays reasonably well, though you can't customize his look at all. The rest of the characters can be customized using money you earn by winning fights. You can purchase new colors for each of a character's costumes, as well as body items (like a guitar to sit on Hwoarang's back), new hairstyles, sunglasses, and more. The game also has a gallery mode, where you can spend some of that in-game cash on ending videos and character art. To keep the game's overall file size lower, the ending videos that you can purchase aren't part of the package. So when you purchase them, you'll have to download them individually.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.

With support for 1080p, you'd be right to expect Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection to look sharp. Namco hasn't done anything noticeable to enhance the graphics on the PS3, but it's a nice-looking arcade game to begin with, and the higher resolution seems to help the game look as good as it ever has. The frame rate is typically solid and smooth, though there were a few rare spots where it dropped a handful of frames.

While it doesn't offer the same bowling modes or online world rankings that the PSP game offered, this budget-priced version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has it where it counts: in the gameplay. Plans for a US release of this game haven't been announced at this time, but since it's already sitting in foreign stores (and since more crafty North American PS3 owners are figuring out how to purchase from those stores by the day), it probably isn't too far off.

Can someone Help me I've got a Japanese PS3 and because i can't use my Visa card on the USA playstation Store i downloaded Tekken 5 from the European Playstation store. when i try to play it, it keeps saying "This game is not Supported. (80028f10)". Now i've been able to down loaded Blust Factory and Lemmings and can play them with no problem and there the full games. Downloaded GT HD but that won't work i get the same code that i get with Tekken 5. But yet the USA version works fine can someone help me?

Oh, it's a port. That's why it looks so ugly. Graphics are last generation. Hopefully gameplay will be fun. It will be a good deal for $15. I don't think I'm going to buy it unless the price drops to $10 here in the US. Tekken 6 will look better. This should hold over die hard fans until 6 comes out. Tekken 5 will be a good download initiative for the PS store. This is the beginning of what's to come in the future for PS3 downloads. :)

amh77025: thank you. you saved me from writing another long ass essay that can be summarized into a paragraph by someone else. :) Ltriggs: please understand that the board running the arcade version of tekken 5 dark resurrection is basically a suped up ps2. and also. tekken dr is a port to the psp from tekken 5 DR arcade. not the other way around. the psp version didn't come out first. and people who have been wanting a "true" home experience of tekken 5 dr now have it. and people don't have to rip open psps to play the game properly now. now... if only we can get some decent sticks running on it. Markman? where you at? what's the news on them sticks?

"Lt_Riggs Ok dude for one thing DR is a PSP GAME not a PS2 GAME. Second of all, No, if this was on XBL I would not buy it. ITS A $16 FREAKING DOLLAR DOWNLOAD! Please tell me what on XBL costs $16. The only games that should be on there are either the small budget titles like their are on XBL for a small fee, or FULL games at normal/slightly smaller price. I mean who wouldnt want download Halo 3 for $50 instead of traveling out to buy it? I sure wouldnt download a PSP game onto a console for $16... I would wait for the real thing to come to consoles and pay higher price cause you know it would be well worth it. $16 is too high a risk for an arcade game ported from a portable. " If you had read ALL of the article, you would realize that TDR is PSP game, and that T5DR (note the 5) is an arcade game, which indeed plays as if it were on a beefed up PS2, but it also can play in 1080p, which really makes the graphics look even better. The fact that you can DOWNLOAD a current arcade game for such a low price is great, especially since the arcade machines can sell for about $6000. So as you can see, this is not a PSP game, it is an arcade game, and a nice one at that. I myself do not own a PS3, but I have played T5DR in the arcades, and it is a wonderful fighter. Please understand what you're talking about before talking about it next time.

sizzlemebacon2... you must not be a fan of tekken. $16.00 is too much for an arcade game? wow.. i never thought I would have seen the day where someone just got too cheap for a game. stickman116: i'm happy that you were able to take my two long essays and sum it all up in that nice little paragraph of yours. makes me want to step my writing skills up. i bow to you sir.

Listen to Stickman116 what he/she just said applies to all consoles not just the PS3 let Sony and Microsoft duke it out while gamers in general just go continue to enjoy (or hate games) regardless of their console and I won't pay 16.00$ to play an arcade game I don't care if it's the best arcade game ever that's too much cash.

Do people like to rain on the PS3 parade or what? If you guys hate the graphics, don't buy it. Simple. Besides, it's Namco that makes this game. Would you still be complaining so much if this came out on 360's XBLA? If so, would you blame MS then? Please just make some sense and let people enjoy the good news. Everything doesn't have to be twisted into a system wars battle. Pro-games. That's what gamers should be, forget the system wars.

that's funny nikefreak. because you right. doa4 is rather pretty on my 73". and no. i didn't pay full price for the mitsu either. gotta love having friends in the industry b. You just gotta! my point being. is that all i'm lookin for. is pretty. doesn't matter if it's gears of war, doa 4, tekken 5 dr, or gthd.. and if tekken 5 for the ps2 looks **** sexy on that screen with the progressive mode... tekken 5 dr just seems to tickle my fancy with the 1080p. and i've seen hd screens of this game on not just this website.. but others as well. and i say again. these screenshots. don't do HD justice. that's for any game. and i rock the 1080 and have a 720 pavv (aka samsung) as well. also as for projectors: I'm not really a big fan of em. yeah they nice I won't hate on em. but they just not me. i prefer my tv. i can hug a tv and not be able to wrap my arms around it.. but the projectors... eh.... eh...... EHHHH.... not me. also again. I love readin graphic whores. cause they want the shiny. pretty ain't enough.. so you hate on it. cause it ain't shiny. but you good sir.. i respect the fact that you shot at a lot of issues that a casual gamer goes for. price, online play, release, etc, blah blah blah. and in your opinion Doa4 is the better deal. mine.. says tekken is. mainly cause. doa hasn't been good since Doa 2 for the dreamcast. but also, you didn't touch on gameplay issues. you didn't touch on the controllers and how both games feel and play compared to each other. but to that though.. you need to be able to play both games effectively. and i do mean effectively. not just little **** and think you some **** you need that real tourney cred. if you got that for both games.. then you speak on it a bit. but for now.. we'll leave that be. otherwise.. you just a casual gamer like me. lookin for the pretty. maybe a step above with the shiny... and mind you i saw this game runnin on a 1080p tv. and yes. i say again. screenshots on this or any other website do not do this game justice. nor.. do they do any hd game justice. and i have a feelin you're thinkin i bought this tv for the ps3... and that's just not true. I bought it for the games b.. for the games. cause gears of war.. on that 73... lookin pretty. Doa4... lookin pretty. i'm lookin forward to the sigma of ninja gaiden. lookin forward to Final Fantasy 13.. hell even VF5.. and yes.. even more games. Is it pretty on the screen? that's all we want. that's all we want. and if the game is fun to boot? hell.. that's a game right there. cause they will and do look pretty on that 73. don't sleep.

"you need to sit it down on a 73" HDTV with 1080p support. there's your HD lovin right there. anyone who saw this on that 1080p, hell even the 720... they saw it on that tv.. anyone can tell you.. it looks pretty. and that's all we want.. that's all we want. graphic whores... they want shiny. not pretty. shiny. and that's why i love them. " muahaha... Little do you realize, this game would look FAR worse on a 73" HDTV (Which if you bought that new, boy you got ripped rofl... An actual HD projector is in that case, a far far better choice, than the Mitsubishi from a few years ago ;p ) because it would be far larger, revealing more pixelation and problems.. And considering this game doesnt look that great from screenshot or video on a 1080p HDTV or 720p HDTV (Both here), I dont see how it would look better on an even larger screen. Further, DOA4 looks stunning in 1080p... And next gen, things that are meant to be shiney should be. Things that are meant to look rough and nonreflective, should. Not all one or the other.

"Guys, this is a BUDGET download so you can't really expect them to go out of their way to enhance the graphics." Read my post. This is a budget title NOW, In the same way DOA4 is NOW. Both are roughly the same price NOW, and were more THEN (When they first released). The primary difference is DOA4 then and now has/had far more features and gameplay than Tekken 5, of which Sony rereleased, old or not, arcade or not, instead of Tekken 6 (Which if they had spent their time wisely all this time, they should have been able to release), where the 360 has has DOA4 since Dec 2005... This is 2007 people lol... Either way you look at it, its a poor value then and now, and is yet another way Sony shoves out recycled content for their new console they simply werent ready for...

"People, stop complaning about the graphics. This isn't a PS3 game, it's just a downloadable port of the PSP/Arcade version to play on the PS3, not an ACTUAL game in the making for the PS3... The one in the making for PS3 is Tekken 6. " Yes, stop complaining... Instead compare. Tekken 5 - Just now (In Japan, No official ETA on US) DOA4 - Year earlier (to arrive on 360/PS3) Tekken 5 - Current retail 16.00 DOA4 - Current retail 20.00 (or less used) Tekken 5 - Came out Feb 2005 (For PS2) DOA4 - Came out Dec 2005 (For 360) Tekken 5 - Previous gen graphics DOA4 - Next gen graphics Tekken 5 - No online play, ghosts downloadable. DOA4 - Online play with full lobby and accessorie/body/etc purchasing with points earned during online matches. Also has full leaderboards, achievements and ghosts, recording of matches, and more. Considering the main points, I would then, and now, still recommend DOA4 over this. Whether or not its a "Full" title, it is the only choice, and what Sony decided to spend its time on (Again, instead of a new game, they chose to rerelease an older game). So as for the argument of "This isnt a full game! It just like Arcade!" No, not really. Unless you would rather say all Sony is really doing for the first year or two is releasing "Arcade" games to combat Live Arcades progress, which isnt helping their bottom line or consumer base much compared to if they had been working on full games to have ready for the launch or shortly after. Their largest franchises should have been planned out better, as a year or two from now, I shouldnt be expecting the first Tekken for PS3 (True Next-Gen game), I should be able to expect the second of Tekkens for PS3... Regardless, then and now, 360 still provides the better deal.

it is an arcade port, with a playable Jinpachi. oh goodie! yes i am looking forward to this "little" download regardless of how sarcastic i may sound. jan 18 2007 baby! can't wait. not sure if that's the actual date.. just the speculated date for the us release. on a side note: I love graphic whores. they make reading these boards rather entertaining. on another side note... screenshots does not do this or any other hd game justice. this or any other website for that matter, unless you have an hd screen and you're lookin at a direct-thing a ma bobby link.. do any hd game justice. for that real ish.. you need to sit it down on a 73" HDTV with 1080p support. there's your HD lovin right there. anyone who saw this on that 1080p, hell even the 720... they saw it on that tv.. anyone can tell you.. it looks pretty. and that's all we want.. that's all we want. graphic whores... they want shiny. not pretty. shiny. and that's why i love them.

Its a port of a PSP game and is a download game. thats why it doesnt look as good as DOA on XBOX 360 because its not a full fledged PS3 game.

this doens't really look next gen, more like ps2 graphics. seriously DOA 4 looks way better. i thought ps3 was supposed to have better graphics than xbox 360.

hmmm, sounds interesting ... no ending videos ... need to buy them seperately ... at least provide some artwork as ending pictures!

People, stop complaning about the graphics. This isn't a PS3 game, it's just a downloadable port of the PSP/Arcade version to play on the PS3, not an ACTUAL game in the making for the PS3... The one in the making for PS3 is Tekken 6.
