Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Hands-On

The PlayStation 3's download service just got heavy with the release of the latest game in the Tekken series.

Though it isn't available on the US version of Sony's PlayStation Store just yet, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is now available for purchase in Hong Kong and Japan. No, we're not talking about another PSP download. This is the same fighting game that Namco put out on the PSP, but it's running on the PlayStation 3, with full support for widescreen and 1080p resolution. It appears to take after the arcade release, meaning there aren't many extra modes, but it's most certainly the same exciting game of Tekken that you've come to expect from Namco.

The download clocks in at over 800MB and is selling for around $16 in the Hong Kong store. What you get for that money appears to be an arcade-perfect conversion of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which is the upgrade to Tekken 5 that adds new characters and moves. The game offers single-player play, a versus mode, and a ghost battle mode. Like in the PSP version, you can take on computer-controlled fighters that are governed by ghosts, which are profiles based on how another human player plays the game. Dark Resurrection on the PSP had you manually uploading your own ghosts and downloading others. This PS3 release appears to grab new ghosts automatically. While you probably won't mistake the ghosts you'll fight for real human players, they tend to fight a lot better than the average fighting-game artificial intelligence, since you can "teach" these ghosts more elaborate combos and tricks.

All of the Tekken 5 fighters are here and immediately selectable. The new fighters--which aren't all that new anymore, since Tekken 5: DR has been out for a while now--are the returning Armor King, the Russian special forces operative Dragunov, and the rich girl who fights for laughs, Lili. New to this PS3 release is a playable version of Jinpachi, the game's final boss. Jinpachi unlocks after you beat the arcade mode and plays reasonably well, though you can't customize his look at all. The rest of the characters can be customized using money you earn by winning fights. You can purchase new colors for each of a character's costumes, as well as body items (like a guitar to sit on Hwoarang's back), new hairstyles, sunglasses, and more. The game also has a gallery mode, where you can spend some of that in-game cash on ending videos and character art. To keep the game's overall file size lower, the ending videos that you can purchase aren't part of the package. So when you purchase them, you'll have to download them individually.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added new characters to an already-robust lineup when it was released into arcades, and now they're all on the PS3, too.

With support for 1080p, you'd be right to expect Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection to look sharp. Namco hasn't done anything noticeable to enhance the graphics on the PS3, but it's a nice-looking arcade game to begin with, and the higher resolution seems to help the game look as good as it ever has. The frame rate is typically solid and smooth, though there were a few rare spots where it dropped a handful of frames.

While it doesn't offer the same bowling modes or online world rankings that the PSP game offered, this budget-priced version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has it where it counts: in the gameplay. Plans for a US release of this game haven't been announced at this time, but since it's already sitting in foreign stores (and since more crafty North American PS3 owners are figuring out how to purchase from those stores by the day), it probably isn't too far off.

nice work sony. (and please consider that I'm something of an xbox fanboy. now after reading that, don't just blam me, but read the post.) all they need to do now is make sure that high profile content like this is released worldwide. I mean GT en Tk should have been released to everyone and not just the japanese crowd. all you need is a translator. and someone to change the text. boom. you have a kick ass fighting game. It costs more than an xbox live arcade game, but you get tekken, not some bogus stuff like MK or SFII. I've been somehwat dissappointed by the content on MS live arcade. best games are still the launchgames: hexic and geometry wars. They do seem to be goin more for low profile indie games and stuff like small arms and assault heroes are fun, just not a blast. I'd like to see some more high profile content for xbox live in line with what sony is doing here: GT and Tekken over playstation live arcade? nice... anyhow, bring me ascendancy and colonization and tyrian (!) to arcade and I would loose my social life.

This is brilliant! It might not be as good as the next Tekken game for PS3 but it's still pretty decent.

i'm really shocked by all the complaining this article has enlisted. well, maybe i guess i'm not all that shocked; frustrated, yes, but not shocked. this is Sony we're talking about here; they could give copies of Motorstorm away for free and people would probably still complain. as for me, i have never been big into Tekken or DOA (Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter is where it's truly at). but for $16, with significantly enhanced resolution, it can't be naught but good. unless you're one of those misguided, diluted gamers who was actually expecting a $16 re-release of Tekken 5 to sport next-gen graphics. kudos to Sony. it's headlines like these that they need a lot more of.

the download for the tekken 5 dark resurrection game wasnt made to be awesome in graphics and all that stuff.sony just made it to where people can download it and play it that dont have a psp.m$ only comes out with 30 to 50 meg downloadable games that are 100 yrs old and not even brought up to a ps1 graphics not to mention ps2 or ps3 graphics.dont dont complain about what this game is or isnt.this game being a 800 meg download and its a big file as it is--but the only time you get to download a game that big on the 360 is a demo that lastes 10 minutes--at least this download is capable of being played for hour aftr hour..way to go sony--now release soul reaver series for download..i would buy them for 15 to 20 bucks each--just to get to play them again--ps3 is starting to shape up--now is the time for microsoft to begin to worry

the first impressive thing on the PS3 (and it's download service), a step in the right direction. M$ need to stretch out a bit and do similar 'big' games like this. bravo Sony.

Well since it's only for download, I guess they've had to greatly limit the look of it. But still, I was expecting a bit more from Sony's ''Amazing Cell' they keep raving about.

JeTGoDLiKe, I fell asleep there... what did you say? Oh... wait, I wasn't dreaming... What a crazy, 12 year old thing to say! Thats like a 12 year old child coming into a boxing ring (or something which needs rules) and spouting off how terrible things are... things like "the ropes will chaffe my armpits!" and "it's too light in here, this place is no good for my demonic demeanor!". Fair point, the graphics are not particularly oozing PS3.. but neither is alot of xbox live arcade games. My point being are that I think that the price of this game will be more expensive than the hong kong conversions that gamespot has done, did they convert the taxes etc with this $16 total? The graphics are accurate to the arcade conversion, and of course this game will tide over the people who want a tidy fighting game. But personally I think the ps3 needs a PROPER tekken game, say Tekken 6... its having a hard time selling itself, like the 360 did before. I hope that this game doesnt bog down and delay the progress of Tekken 6. Usually you will find that any attempts like re-releasing etc is a way to make up for an upcoming delay... :( If the game is $16 (i.e £7) I will be well happy. But I dont think it will be this price at all, I think teh conversion rates are wrong because historically GS have usually never got this right.

JeTGoDLiKe, congratulations on demonstrating us your innate ability of having a bellow average, one-digit IQ and fanboyish opinion. NEXT!!! As for Tekken, it looks great, and is at a great price. The only real downside is that it doesn`t include the endings, but as long as you can download them (using in-game points, and not actually paying for them), then it isn`t so bad.

Hellooooo, people! This is a budget re-release available as an extra download from the PS store! It's an intentional novelty. Besides, it's not the graphics that count to make a good game. Stop dissing Sony. Hate 'em? Okay, just leave your whines to your own heads. That's what i do for sprouts. I hate sprouts, but i don't have to make everyone else hate 'em with me.

The graphics look a little stale now, imo. For $16 this is a real steal, but I certainly hope that its not taking any glory away from the to-be-released Tekken 6. But if this game is cheap and plays well, im in! At the moment, I am just waiting for the Euro ps3 launch, and seriously I want to have a bunch of Ps3 titles which show off the system, I honestly wil be peeved if I have to wait a full year for the good games to start coming out. For $16 this is at least a start, but this is HongKong conversions right? Gamespot never get these right, they avoid taxes and all sorts of things! It will probably be in the region of about $20 - $25 for the USA, and £20 for the UK.

The PS3 doesn't upscale games but that shouldn't be a problem for any modern HD TV. These TVs should already be able to up / downscale between NTSC / PAL, 720p & 1080i (& even 1080p) via their signal processors. If you have a modern "HD Ready" TV, PS2 titles should upscale just fine. It's only people who have crappy old 480p / 1080i sets or those with scales that can't upscale properly from 480i via HDMI who have a problem. I expect that Sony decided that the problem was small enough that it wasn't worth bothering to address with a scaling buffer within the PS3. The 360 does have a scaler, but then again it doesn't have HDMI, and has it's own display problems such as the numerous titles in Europe that only play on PAL-60 compatible TVs. Still, the PS3 should still have had a scaler in the console simply to hide these sort of issues and ensure scaling was consistent from one TV model to the next. Perhaps Sony are even considering a hardware revision to address the issue, or perhaps they'll prevaricate long enough that the problem will go away entirely.

I'm not the biggest on 3D fighters. But I'm looking to try one and actually be a ble to do something other than lose. So I can't wait to give this a try, I just wish the Tekken series had online, so there was some way to watch, play many others, and get better. I like these steps Sony are taking. Can't wait till 2007 gets rolling.

It's really sad that unlike the 360 which came out a year before, the PS3 doesn't upscale PS2 games. I should be able to pop in my PS2 disc of Tekken 5 and have it look like that, instead these bastards are trying to get me to pay again for a game i already own. All I can say is VF5 can't come soon enough, then maybe I'll have a reason to turn on my PS3.

" You can yes but I choose not to and I don't fill my pants about it either.... Looks to me like Nintendo and Sony have both ripped off the xbox arcade but put less effort in.

It is pretty nice to have a console version of Tekken DR... I'm sick of having to send game data from my PSP version to my friend who doesn't have the game. (and basically don't bother buying a copy) taking a heck of a long time to start the fight.

Not really fiting the excitement here but, Jeff is back!!! And yea, great job Sony and Namco Bandai, I think its a pretty good deal seeing this on the PS3 network. I would pay to get a copy if I have a PS3, but Jeff says theres times you lose some frames, the ps2 version never got that, even if the new game is upscaled to 1080p, that shouldn't be an excuse since its running on the PS3, a powerful system and a last gen game.

Xbox fan here, I really don't like Sony. That said, if it really is an arcade perfect port it is a very good deal and I wish the 360 did things like that. I know why they don't; you can make more money if a game fits on a memory card. I don't think it will be long until Microsoft alows such things though. Before I get things like "It's not a port, they said so." Yeah it is, unless console manufactures base the consoles on last gen arcade boards, which I haven't seen since the Dreamcast, it would have to be. sigh, i'm jealous though. Not cuz it's tekken, cuz I think it would be awesome to get newer arcade games on my 360.

thats really not bad. 16 bucks. a psp port or not, dark ressurection is tekken 5 so i don't see the problem. also, i think the price is bound to be raised. i living in Hong Kong (REALLY!) know the prices around here. the psp value pack only costs 210 USD so that pricing is bound to be raised slightly higher. and also, the ugly blue and silver models of the psp have hit Hong Kong and nobodies buying them lol XD

Er, it's not a PSP port, fool. It's the arcade game ported with some slight additions, 1080p support and Jinpachi, etc. Read the article before you make smartass comments, moron.
