The Game Awards Player's Choice Game Is Down To Five Titles, With A Clear Frontrunner

If you want Hades to get the top spot, you'll want to act fast.

The Game Awards will air on December 10, 2020, and voting for the Player's Choice game of the year is still open. Separate from the full nominee list, voted on by press and industry, the third and final round of the Player's Choice vote has whittled the entries down to five games, with one a clear frontrunner.

The five titles, in order of votes right now, are as follows:

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

  • The Last of Us Part II
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Hades
  • Doom Eternal
  • Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

You can vote for your favorite right here.

It's a very PlayStation-heavy list, except for Hades--which is also the only game of this five to get a 9/10 review from GameSpot.

At the time of writing, The Last of Us Part II has 40% of the vote, and Ghost of Tsushima has 34%. As this is a player-driven vote, games that sold well naturally have an advantage, and both games have been huge success stories. The Last of Us Part II was the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 game, and Ghost of Tsushima was the fastest-selling new PlayStation IP.

Last year's winner was Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but Nintendo fans seem not to have mobilized this year--Animal Crossing: New Horizons bowed out after round 2.

You can vote for the Player's Choice award until December 7, at 11:59PM PT.

I can't believe I'm saying this but justice prevail for once! Neil Druckmann and his media goon squads have been squashed after Neil shamelessly and publicly pleaded votes for his trash. Ghost of Tsushima is player's choice 2020 and it's well deserved!

Gamespot must be so proud when they wrote this article lmao.

Funny how EVERY SINGLE page with this awards mentioned link to TLoU 2. It has become such an blatantly pro-TLoU2 rigged thing that it should be disregarded in its entirety. Sad, cuz I do believe it must have been at least a solid 7-8 game, but unfortunately the industry pours hundreds of thousands of dollars into the reviewing community, and this is what we get... :/

I would say Ghost or Animal Crossing based off the feedback I got first-hand.

And Ghost of Tsushima is now leading by a lot 43% to 34 % .

Rightfully so since it was an amazing game that told a tragic and beautiful story.

@jyml8582: If you didn't play Ghost of Tsushima then I could see someone voting for The Last of Us 2. It was a pretty good game.

Was it great? No it wasn't its a solid 7. But it wasn't the worst game of the year.

@dragonsama: I have to disagree. TLOU2 was, IMO, the worst game of the year. For some reason this bad game is constantly pushed as a contender for GOTY. Part one definitely was, but not this one. I can't wait for this year to be over. Gamespot pushing TLOU2, Covid-19, lack of stock on computer components (especially new video cards), etc.

@mgools: The Last of Us 2 is the best game to come out in the last 7 years. Only game better than it in the last 10 years was The Last of Us 1.

TLOU2 is a 10/10 game.

TLOU is an 11/10 game

@locke90: No it's not a 1 by an stretch.

A game that would be a 1 would be an asset flip on Steam, Something so loaded with microtransactions that it's pay to win like Madden or, FIFA or NBA 2K, or maybe something really broken like Big Rigs.

TLOU 2 is very well made in terms of Art and Sound design, and it plays well.

The issues are the Gameplay didn't evolve from the first game whatsoever and the story is full of plot holes. That's is major issue.

That does not make it a 1 at all.

Is TLOU2, Game of the year? Not not even close. but it's not the worst game ever made. Again it's a solid 7 It's good but not great.

I want Hades to win as much as everyone...but there's literally no path to victory for it with the time remaining and the votes already tallied.

I recommend everyone jump ship to Ghosts of Tsushima to make sure TLoU2 doesn't steal it.

I don't even understand how TLOU2 is even on the list to begin with. Worst game of the year award maybe.

*Spoilers*

I don’t get why TLOU2 gets so much attention, the game is good but never a contender for GOTY in my opinion.

The game was good up until half way in to Abby’s campaign, after that I just felt it was a chore to finish the game.

Then playing with Ellie in California was absolutely tedious and the game had over stayed its welcome.

The game looks gorgeous and naughtydog did a great job with the setting, the music is pretty nice but the story did feel a bit overhyped. The story has it’s good moments but it doesn’t deliver moments like the giraffes from the first game even though it tried.

I don’t think i’ll go back to TLOU2, I didn’t enjoy it too much.

My pic for GOTY is hades hands down. Funny enough it’s a game where you’re stuck doing the same thing over and over. Characters are very well written, weapons feel satisfying, the music is just great, the art is very nice and it’s a very deep game.

Trying to escape and being able to get the gods you want on your side is very satisfying and if things aren’t as good then you can always upgrade something and try again and again. The sense of progression keeps me coming back even after escaping and I want to know much more about some characters. I could praise Hades all day long, i found a new love for roguelike games.

I don't get why people like TLoU Part 2 so much. That game has some of the worst pacing I have ever seen. It wastes so much of your time going from point a to point b with very little combat or interesting gameplay. Just walk and sometimes move a box or use a rope. The original game managed to balance the story and gameplay segments way better in a way that kept me riveted. I quit playing Part 2 7 hours in because I was bored and it didn't seem like it was going to change up the structure. And if it does then it should have done it sooner. Shame too because you can tell a lot of talented people poured their hearts into this project.

@able_to_think: I played it for 120 hours, it was as engaging and exciting going through it the third time as it was the first. Absolute 10/10 masterpiece. Other games I struggle to complete even once. Only other games I've completed more than once is Metal Gear Solid 4... (100 times)

Most people didn't. Mainly a media created success. Most people actually voted it as poor. Even Metacritic stopped allowing negative reviews which skewed the true negative results. Before they did this the rating was 2.9, and even after doing this best they could get was 5.7. Add in all the employees over at Naughty Dog that lost their jobs because of this game, and it makes the game even worse than it was :(. However, everyone can have their own opinion, and some liked the game. Heck, I admit I really liked the Matrix game on the original Xbox, so not too far fetched that some would like TLOU2.

@able_to_think:

I loved the first game but I didn't complete it for a second time until the remaster came out. Once you know the story and the surprises then playing it through again is a chore because of the fairly bland gameplay. The sequel I completed 2 days after I bought it. And 2 weeks later I'd finished it again. It is slow in places but then so is the first game imo.

The sequel mixes it up with more enemy types. More combat and traversal options. I just find the gameplay much more engrossing whereas the first game always was a bit clunky and sterile and still has long sections of doing nothing but looting.

TLOU franchise is my GOAT but they could both do with being injected with a bit more action especially on a second play through. I wish they'd change enemy locations or add a random enemy spawn for NG+ mode to make repeated play through more interesting.

Not a surprising list but I have to ask why there is still such blind hate for The last of us ?

Spoilers

Is it the fact that jole was killed ? If thats the case how could you not see that coming ? A sequel to the first game with the same character's again would have been a terrible direction for the game . Even worse then what some might think is already the worst.

Was it who killed him ? If that is the case who would have done it? Any one else killing him would have felt cheap.now If you were fine with who did it but not the way the characters looked well thats a personal preference and you can have that . Id just say if you are able to get passed that there is actually a very good game there.

Was it the way he died ? I mean personally for as fucked as it was I thought it was perfect for the story to play out the way it did.

Let's not forget he was a terrible person his actions throughout the first game were pretty bad . He even eluded to some of what he'd done before his mission. So honestly with in this game world his death fits .

Personally I thought the story was great the environments were super cool one of my favorite parts was the section before you got the bow and arrow. Reading all the little notes and stuff about the nabiours how they fucked him over but he got them as well and then you end up in the courtyard only to see the 3 nabiours as clickers in his backyard only to then end up fighting him. I fucken dug that.

Also the surprise work bench scean and when you realize those people were not related to anything other then just trying to get buy . So fucking good

The combat was like butter it just played so nice little detailes like throughing shit through a window. Sure its simple but the sound to the glass breaking the way the glass broke it impressive

Sure some things were a bit heavy handed and It went on a little longer then it could have but honestly this game was fantastic and if you can get passed some of the more let's say social issues and look at it for what it is at its core a video game well id say you'd be pretty hard up to find a better one this year .

I wouldn't call it "blind hate". The game just wasn't any good to many people. We all have differences in what we like. You liked it, and many others didn't. Fairly simple IMO.

And @RestatBonfire, it isn't a new trend. It should be a problem or a surprise if everyone doesn't like the same game as yourself. That is why there are so many choices.

@mgools: oh man I totally get it , people are all going to have an opinion and there are no right and wrong answer. What I referring to are the people who saw out of context leaks before the game came out and just wrote the game off. And sure there are some that may have initially been in that position, but still chose to play it and still maintained that same position. But its that other group im referring to the ones that just out right hated it im just curious as to why

@esqueejy: I have no clue if what I am about to post is fact. When the game was just released there were accusations that Naughty Dog pushed media outlets to give a good review with threats that if they didn't they would not longer get future games from the studio before release in order to get reviews out in time. This would cut into readership, and harm the websites that refused this. Again, I have no clue if this is true, but was one of the early reported reasons on why there was such a huge discrepancy between Media Reviews and User Reviews.

The only item I do know that was true is Metacritic admitted to locking down the negative reviews for user reviews.

@mgools: Yes, you can find all sorts of theories out there pushed by people (a) trying to cover for the fact that a major reason for the backlash against the game was the gaming community's unfortunate penchant for anti-SJW, homophobic, reactionary toxicity and (b) yes, Naughty Dog reached out to reviewers when reviews came back so scattershot, with some being very negative and some being quite good. If you take a second to remove all the controversy, you'd have to admit it makes perfect sense for a developer to reach out to reviewers in a situation like that in order to get real feedback beyond some 5 paragraph review that was posted online. Instead, because of the hate brigade, it turns into a big conspiracy to "bully" and influence game review sites.

Metacritic shuts down the public reviews when its data shows that the reviews are being bombed and brigaded one way or the other. The small portion of the gaming community who does that crap loves to sockpuppet extra accounts to post extra votes and other crap. And yeah, that tends to be

Fact is, there were alot of people out there who hated what happened to Joe because they absolutely never wanted to play a game split between two gay women as the main characters. Removal of the main male character triggered them. Was that ALL the hate for the game? No, but the reactionary alt-right types, etc., have become quite practiced at stoking alternative reasons for these hissy fits while attempting to hide the real reasons they are doing it. Most people aren't fooled, but some are.

At the end of the day, the game did very well, both in the sales sense and in terms of the majority of players' reactions to it. BUT, you can bet your buns that the voting for GOTY that GS posted the other day was bombed with votes for Ghost of Tsushima when those people realized TLOU2 was leading in the polling. It was a rather abrupt shift.

But if someone doesn't like the game because it included things they do not like, for example SJW content as you mentioned, then they have the right to downvote the game. That is there prerogative, and an acceptable reason for them to say they didn't like it.

At first I was confused by this, but then I realized that this must actually be a Worst Game of the Year Awards, it's the only logical explanation of how The Last of Us 2 could possibly be in the lead.

Yeah, it doesn't explain what those other games are doing on the list, but then again... I guess Ghosts of Tsushima was kind of unoriginal, DOOM Eternal did have an awful lot of forced platforming for a First Person Shooter, Hades is just a mashup of Diablo/Castlevania, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales is overpriced. So if you really nitpick the details like mainstream reviewers so often do for attention, then I suppose it makes sense.

Regardless, TLOU2 definitely deserves the Worst Game of the Year 2020 Award. Gotta work on those typos GameSpot, they happen way too often, and when you miss an important word it can completely change the meaning of the article in the eyes of viewers.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: that's your opinion and your welcome to it. You had something negative to say about every game so I'm just curious, whats game of the year for you? For me, it was tlou2. Sure, there was some slow parts but genuinely enjoyed it.

Mine never is as it seems the more mainstream games are the only ones we are allowed to vote on. Mine would have been Automobilista 2.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: the only obvious is you contradict the majority opinion. All of these games are awesome and tlou2 is simply a masterpiece. I hope it does win GOTY, the attention to detail is on a level I've never seen.
