The Right Way to Lie to Gamers

Publishers habitually pull the wool over customers' eyes in marketing their games, but they can only do it with our cooperation.

As I was writing up a story on Prototype 2's Blackwatch Collectors Edition last week, it struck me what an awful package Activision had put together "for the fans." The $80 premium bundle includes the game (along with the Radnet downloadable content all preorders will receive), a soundtrack CD, an art book, a digital comic, the first paid DLC pack (when it's released), and a 20-percent-off voucher for the Prototype Merchandise Store.

So for an extra $20 beyond the standard price of the game, the fans Activision touts so highly will receive a CD and book of the sort Atlus often gives away for free with its games, a comic book that serves as little more than a commercial for the game they've already purchased, access to a DLC pack that won't come until a month later (keeping them from feeding their copy into the used game mill), and a coupon that will let them spend even more money on Prototype-branded stuff. It's like "for the fans" has an unspoken "Because we can gouge them for more money" right after it.

Don't the fans deserve something a little more inspired than an art book and soundtrack CD?

Given the steaming piles of publisher propaganda I sift through on a daily basis, it took me a little time to figure out why this PR in particular irked me so much. Eventually, I found an explanation already exists in a concept commonly used when talking about games.

"Suspension of disbelief" is an important concept for many games. It's what makes them work, even if they don't always make sense. As an audience, there are things we must ignore in order to get wrapped up in some game experiences.

We must accept that Mario has multiple lives and can fall into a pit of lava only to magically reappear a few feet away in perfect health. That Greg Jennings can outrun an entire team of NFL players for 99 yards on a broken leg. That the jovial Nathan Drake has killed more people than your average epidemic. That a phoenix down will resurrect anybody in any situation, so long as you didn't die in a CG-rendered cutscene. That the characters in Heavy Rain are intelligent enough to not only blink but also breathe and feed themselves. All of these things are clearly absurd, but if we can somehow ignore them while we play, there is enjoyment to be found in all of those games.

Interestingly, this doesn't stop when we put the controller down. Our willing suspension of disbelief is essential not just for interacting with the games themselves, but also for the industry's marketing and hype cycle.

In order to get excited about games, we need to believe the publishers when they tell us this year's lineup is their best ever. That Mass Effect's multiplayer mode and transition from role-playing game to shooter happened for creative reasons instead of financial ones. That Dead Rising 2: Off the Record was a clever recontextualization and not a quick-and-dirty double dip. That there's a good reason to bring back X-COM and Syndicate as first-person shooters. That Madden 12 fixes everything that was wrong with Madden 11 and is itself perfect (at least until Madden 13 comes out to fix all that's broken in Madden 12).

No Caption Provided
This is a little heavy on examples pulled from EA games, but at least their games have been good enough to support our suspension of disbelief.

Notice how there's no shortage of people out there who consider those games I just mentioned among the best in their genre (Syndicate and X-COM aside, because the masses haven't played them yet). There's a social contract, a gentlemen's agreement between gamers and publishers, that states roughly that the better we feel your games are, the more we'll suspend disbelief and preorder collector's bundles and talk about the game on message boards, Facebook, Twitter, and so forth.

As gamers, we've proven more than willing to hold up our end of the bargain. We get cautiously optimistic whenever Sega says it's taking Sonic back to his roots. We get excited for Capcom's latest fighting game, even though it will likely feel stripped down at launch and rendered obsolete by a super-duper version with a few more characters within a year's time. We buy systems at launch, fully knowing that often means hardware failures, pitiful software lineups, and an inevitable redesign or price drop once the kinks have been worked out. We preorder games that are being shipped by the millions on the off chance that somehow they well sell out (or to avoid a bizarre guilt trip from a GameStop employee).

Clearly, we're pretty good at suspending disbelief. The publishers generally do a pretty good job holding up their end of the bargain as well. We rarely see a terrible game hyped to high heaven these days (see: Daikatana, Atari 2600 Pac-Man), and publisher hype is usually restrained to sentiments that it's possible some sane person somewhere would hold.

But in the case of Prototype 2, Activision crossed the line (subjective though it may be). The publisher is saying the Blackwatch edition of the game was made "for the fans," and while fans may enjoy what comes in the package, it's difficult to think the package is ultimately worth the extra money being charged. It's still more galling when you notice the publisher pads out the list of advertised goodies with the DLC all Prototype 2 preorders receive and a coupon with the only purpose of giving fans incentive to spend still more money on the game.

The curious thing about this social contract is that I take offense to it being breached. I apparently don't mind being lied to, so long as it's done "the right way." When publishers push the marketing hype beyond the realm of the plausible, I get riled up because they aren't treating me with the basic respect to which a customer is entitled. So go ahead and keep lying to us, publishers. But at least have the decency to pretend that there would be consequences if we caught you doing it.

As long as there's a sucker there will be a snake oil salesman.....need I say more? I play games also but I do decide with my dollar....I played Skyrim on someones pc for an hour and decided to buy Kingdoms of Amonlur: Reckoning instead....I'm still playing Kingdoms and feel like I got my money's worth even though they do the same by offering 7 additional missions which, if you've played this, doesn't really feel like a bonus since the game is ridiculously huge by itself. Bottom line, you as an individual cannot be fleeced unless it's mutual so stop blamin the publisher for milking you dry when it is you the gamer that allows it.

So what happens when the game you buy is just bare bones? Now you have to pay for more weapons, extra levels, etc... So all you get now for \$60 is the first three levels and not a full game.

Games aren't worth as much as their price is , they are really not worth 80 bucks when first released. It doesn't matter how good a game is. That's just crazy.

Artbook and a soundtrack alone, for an extra $20 is pretty standard. I'm not sure what the issue is here. Its a pretty box with a couple of exclusive items thrown in. CE's are not for everyone. So what is the issue then? Are you complaining that consumers are given choices? The choice to reserve a copy? Collector's Editions are a choice, generally for those who enjoy the pretty little extra stuff. Devs continue to support games after launch with DLC, and provide more choices. PC games have had expansions, map packs and all sorts of addons for DECADES, but on consoles its a consumer rights violation. Funny. DLC makes your game incomplete? What are you smoking? =/ We're being lied to in advertising? Sonic returning to its roots? If you believe that, you'll believe that drinking soda will give you sex appeal. I'm not interested in Prototype 2, personally. Didn't play the first. But I disagree that offering a CE with an artbook, a soundtrack CD and some DLC for a mere $20 is any kind of to fans. James Cameron's Avatar on PS3, however. Now that was a crappy freakin CE. Reasonably sized box, about the size of the Arkham City CE box. But inside, its nothing but the game, a 12-digit code for some useless in-game weapons, and one of the worst, cheaply-made action figures I've seen this side of a 1980's counterfeit GI Joe from a Bali flea-market. (The one I got has a leg attached the wrong way, and it doesn't stand upright). 3/4 of the space in the box is unused.

@Corrupted_Wolf The tagline 'for the fans' is not a factor at all,the same people would still buy the edition even if they advertised it differently

Suspension of disbelief. I believe that is real. My bro and I rented Lost Planet 2 and installed it on a friend's PS3 while we babysat his offspring.(Which sucked because it took all of one day to install.)But the next day, after a few missions of relentless surprise knock back attacks and one hit kills,I was more than done. It was one of the worst gaming experiences I've ever had. My brother kept playing on,making gigantic exclamations of rage, fighting through the same level again and again to beat it,and when he did,it wasn't triumphant joy I heard, but and exasperated gasp an angry grunt of,"Finally, that level is OVER." And he tried to convince me that was fun. Nope,I had much more fun taking care of the younglings.I would much prefer to change diapers than to waste a moment with that game. And it's funny, because the article is so true, yet if never fails. How many people simply MUST have the latest CoD or the newest iPad? Every year millions get convinced that what they have isn't good enough, and I sit back and laugh, all the while suspending my disbelief that a gorilla would wear a red tie and run all the way across an island and risk his life for a pile of bananas.

A pre-order incentive makes you buy the game before being able to find out whether its crap or not.

I like the way Valve does it best. Give consumers more content than they originally paid for all for free. Team Fortress 2 before it was free to play has more than four times the content it launched with.

Well I don't buy into this "preorder for exclusive bla bla bla!" or the "plays better on whatever console!" propaganda. I dont even rush to buy things on release day anymore, it just isn't worth it to me unless I get a discount or someone like amazon gives a $20 gift card with it. The publishers are just milking many consumers with these collectors editions of games, charging $20 extra or more for less than $5 worth of extra goodies. The ones that are actually worth the extra $ are few and far between, I can think of maybe a couple Sony exclusives have made it worth it, like GT5 or God of War III and LBP2. Still didn't get me to pay extra tho.

@irishdude199210 Indeed. NamcoBandai are starting to make a good image. And From Software are hardcore gamers, and it shows in their games. Also KONAMI, amazing stuff there. ESPECIALLY Kojima productions. Hideo Kojima is a gaming demi-god, and never was there an MGS with BS DLC and expansions needed. You get a complete and very note-worthy game. BTW MGS always came with an Artbook.

Its all about how much respect you feel a company should give its customers collectors editions are almost always overpriced for what's in them but this package crosses that line and treats gamers like idiots. content like this ought to be used to drive retail sales and discourage piracy, The pre-ordered retail copy of the Witcher 2 came with more stuff than this, the Deus EX: HR augmented edition was another pre-order upgrade that gave a fair amount of extra content for the asking price. Some publishers see this as a way of reducing piracy, others just want to milk more money from fans.

Developers lie, marketing is a lie... Sometimes I bought a game after having read a positive review on Gamespot, and then I discovered that the game is actually s**t... In those cases, for a moment I have the disbelief that in the review it's told lot of b******t, then I reconsider that maybe it is just a matter of personal taste, maybe the game cannot be appreciated by a gamer like me, maybe the person that wrote the article is an "expert" and I am not.... Well, "Suspension of disbelief" works ;-))

Great article, some gamers are dupe, others want to be taken in, so gaming is a sort of religion - sure it is, we need to believe in something because skepticism demands an awful lot of thinking. However sites like Gamespot have their share of responsibility : articles written before a game is published add to the marketing hype, even when there is nothing to be excited about.

wait wait wait! what was that about mass effect? come on, at least they're trying to make the game appeal to a broader audience, without striping the core gameplay, but improving it. unlike other games, Mass Effect 3 allows choice of how you play the game you buy. it's only a shooter if you choose it to be, but fans true to the saga will still be able to play it rpg style all the way. multiplayer is just bonus to me, a great additions as it seams. played the demo, loved it! preordered N7 edition. as for other games, you're being lied as much as you let them to.

Dark Souls came with a CD soundtrack,an art book and mini-guide, and in Europe Demon's Souls came with the same only the guide was a full one. All that at no extra cost, not even a pre-order needed. Now that's a good publisher!

It isn't the Prototype 2 package that's bad, it's the game. It hasn't evolved or turned into anything good. Same Prototype pile of dung. You'd think they'd learn how crappy Prototype 1 was. Learn from Sucker Punch. Make a good sandbox game and don't waste a good premise because of you're a talentless developer.

To be fair, the Prototype 2 pack isn't as bad as many others. What about things like Skyrim (plastic dragon for more than the price of the game) or Saints Row the Third (access to the items shown in a preview before being turned into DLC)? But yes, the fact that people actually buy these packs is ridiculous. If people didn't buy them, then publishers wouldn't sell them. I make sure that any expensive editions (I can't call them limited or collector's editions with a straight face) of a game that I buy are worth it.

I don't really understand. $80 is a cheap price to just get the game alone, let alone one with "collectors items". I agree that the collector editions are made "for the money", not for the fans. I don't believe the hype these days, I get a demo, look at gameplay videos or get a copy from a friend to try it. Sick and tired of getting ripped off for games that just look good on the box and play like rubbish, or are boring to play.

I think that's an awesome way of looking at it. Maybe we need the cycle of excitement, and then either disappointment or exceeded expectations. If gamers were pessimistic about every release, the gaming industry wouldn't be where it is today!

Man, remember the good days when some skins was an unlockable not 4.99 on the digital store, or when the game was fully packaged, not released with a 10 map pack at launch ( That could've been in the in the first place). Or when 40 bucks would get an awesome orginal, non-generic RPG that would last you the longest, not a caimpaign you beat in one or three days. I miss those days :(

Not sure what big deal is. Let me restate that, not sure what the big deal is "this" time. I've never seen a "collector/special/fan's edition" version of the game that was worth the price. Don't buy the collector, special, fan's edition. They do state what those editions contain and the price. Now if they forced us to buy those editions only and no regular version, that'll be a problem.

well done, this is a well written article "The curious thing about this social contract is that I take offense to it being breached. I apparently don't mind being lied to, so long as it's done "the right way." When publishers push the marketing hype beyond the realm of the plausible, I get riled up because they aren't treating me with the basic respect to which a customer is entitled" Yes. gamers who can afford that extra bit of money can buy whatever DLCs and "extra contents" the game publishers dished out on us, and of course if any consumer is unhappy, he or she can keep the money and don't buy it. Its a free world and free market. The game publishers should at least treat us gamers with some respect, and don't expect to fool adult gamers with some silly marketting gimmicks. There are instances where we know something is over-priced and over-hyped but we still play along, because we love the franchise so much and we wanna support the industry. The bottom line is: you play the fool too much with your customers, you gonna lose support. That is how simple it is. There are already a few examples where we see loyal fans shy away from the so called : collector's edition/ special edition/ whatever gimmick edition there is, because later on there will be a GOTY version or whatsoever which makes it feel like a slap on our face for purchasing an overpriced item not so long ago. Adult gamers can afford it, but only if they think it's worth it. Game publishers please wake up.

Good article... after some years of buying recent releases, and a pre-order pack of the Gears of War 2... I finally accepted the fact that, unless the game has a proved-awesome multiplayer experience... i can wait until the price drops down at least half-the price... because it just impossible for me to afford these games at that price... and it´s amazing how the industry´s quality of the game, and quality of the xtra stuff in a special edition... can sometimes be sooooo low.

@Gelugon_baat im sorry i forgot to put the quotations before and after 'weak', i was referring to what someone else said. I'm merely saying i appreciate the hard work and effort that people put into their games and in no way think they are weak. i think modern games can be absolute works of art and are over looked. no one in their right minds who are trying to make a game say "lets screw over our fans and blatantly lie to them" blame the publishers, not the developers that's my point. Support your favorite developers so they no longer need any publishers and everyone will be happy, but that's just my pipe dream. and dont selectively quote me you just sound like fox news

As a student currently working on a bachelor's in game design, this article truly hits home. I think the industry needs to learn this lesson ASAP. A great game designer makes games to create an experience, not make money. Its unfortunate that in today's industry, one of the few successful methods of making games is to relay on a greedy publisher to front the money.
