The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has been officially announced by Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The game will be released in 2014 and will be coming to PCs as well as all other "high-end platforms."

No Caption Provided

The main source of inspiration for The Witcher 3 seems to be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with Geralt's third adventure taking on a more open-world role without acts and chapters.

According to the GameInformer reveal (digested via NeoGAF), the world will be 20 percent bigger than Skyrim's and will take up to 40 minutes to traverse from one end to the other on horseback. The new version of the proprietary Red engine features new streaming technology designed to minimize load times.

Right now The Witcher 3's visuals are running on an old renderer that will be upgraded before the game is released next year. "Right now you see the game in the old renderer, but it's going to be taken to a truly next level," says gameplay producer Marek Ziemak.

The game's quests and narratives are being designed around an interwoven three-tier structure, with Geralt's personal plot sitting at the top and feeding into the invasion of Nilfgaardian and then into typical quests like monster hunting and crafting.

Monster hunting promises to be far more in-depth this time around, with redesigned enemy AI and a much larger focus on gathering clues and information from townsfolk and books before engaging enemies. Factors like the time of day also affect where monsters will appear and their abilities. You can learn that it is possible to kill a vampire in one hit by stabbing both its hearts simultaneously, for instance.

The game's skill trees, magic signs, and inventory will also be tweaked, with CD Projekt Red admitting that many found The Witcher 2's inventory frustrating. Spells can be modified and developed, with Igni now having a new flamethrower effect and also the ability to be transformed into a 360-degree blast.

The Witcher games are based on a famous series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a member of the socially maligned but powerful monster-hunting Witchers.

In The Witcher 3, Geralt's memories (he had been suffering amnesia in the first two games) have been resorted. The game's subtitle suggests a confrontation with the band of spectres known as The Wild Hunt, which are presumably responsible for Geralt's amnesia and are also considered an omen of death.

CD Projekt Red also says Geralt's barber will be available from the get-go, but there will be absolutely no chance of dyeing his distinctive silver locks.

The Witcher series has sold more than 4 million copies as of last summer. CD Projekt Red has been teasing The Witcher 3 since 2011, with the latest barrage of speculation coming last month, when the company showed off a teaser image depicting Geralt's sword. For more on the series, check out GameSpot's review of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

The Witcher 3 is not the only new game CD Projekt Red is at work on. The company is also developing Cyberpunk 2077, a new role-playing game set in a "dark future" where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity."

PS4 and xbox next will be getting it, Wii U will be left out, not exactly a 'high end' system to begin with.

@Gamer_4_Fun Shame I won't be able to see your face when you realise the PS4720 is only going to be slightly more powerful than Wii U.

Oh, and here's an example, WiiU has 2GB RAM and next gen is rumored to have 8GB RAM, that should give you an idea of how much more processing power PS4 and 720 will have by comparison.

@Daian @GriffinBalls @THM80 Unfortunately I don't think that is the case. Ram will be one of the cheaper components in comparison with the cpu/gpu, the difference in cost from 4gb to 8gb to them is probably pennies - a few pounds.

As @THM80 says, I would expect better, but no massive leap.

@GriffinBalls @THM80 You misunderstood, I didn't wish to imply RAM is so important, only that if one spec is so much better, chances are the rest (CPU,GPU) will also be much better.

Whilst I don't dislike your reasoning. Its just not that sound logic.

I recently sped my computer up by taking ram out of it. I had 3 x 2GB, 2 of my sticks were 1066mhz, one was 800mhz, with the 800 gone, the system has 4gb instead of 6gb. But the pc is faster and all benchmarks are better.

Lots of ram is only useful if its being used. Most pc's while gaming do not use stupid amounts of ram. My PC on high settings on everything I haven't ever seen use 3GB, most it consumes is generally 2.8GB.

RAM means diddly squat!

@THM80 I disagree, while current high end PCs are already way better than what those 2 will have to offer, they'll probably be considerably better than Wii U. The standard Wii U is only 50$ more expensive than current gen offerings from Sony and M$, so it probably doesn't pack much of a punch.

I predict 400$+ price points for next gen, just my thoughts.

@THM80 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM, ASUS P8Z77 VLK, Intel i5-3570k @ 3.8Ghz, 1GB Evga 560Ti @ 900Mhz. I'm already laughing at next-gen consoles, the only thing I'll need in the near future is a GPU upgrade if anything, as for right now I have a 7.9 graphics rating on my WEI. I do admit consoles are much more convenient if you're aren't computer savy.

@Daian @THM80 I can't see it myself. I think the difference will be small like 360/PS4. I think too many gamers are putting all their eggs in one basket with Sony's and MS next gen offerings. Guess I'll only know when I have the other 2 sitting under my telly :-)

@JURGMANDR Depends on what you have right now, a good PC will run anything you throw at it at great quality for a few years, don't forget next gen will just be ok hardware in a small, slightly more portable "box" than your usual PC case, what you have right now may already be better than next gen specs, but like I said, it depends on what your specs are.

@Daian @JURGMANDR He said ultra. I can't play even TW2 on ultra (ubersampling) and don't think many people can.

@tmthywtsn @theend3r ubersampling is overrated, the cost in fps speed is too much so it isn't really worth it, you must have a high end GPU to use it or else it slows down the game too much to be worth it for the better image quality.

If you have a high-end processor followed by a good gtx nvidia 680 graphics card the ubersampling becomes a no-brainer real quick.

@gamefreak215jd Ask yourself, WHY?! Why sacrifice visual clarity, graphics, and performance (which in turn limit gameplay) for something impossible to capture on human eye?

@Gamer_4_Fun @gamefreak215jd I guess you are right. When I read it at first I did think the guy who wrote the article was either crazy or drunk.60 fps alone looks unnaturally fast. Then the guy also mentioned it was a representative from Sony who said it.Then I began to have doubts.I guess he must have meant that the games ran almost glitch-free.

@Gamer_4_Fun @gamefreak215jd maybe your eye, or maybe I'm not human. After playing at 120hz I'll never go back to 60hz. Saying 120hz makes no difference is like saying a good sound card makes no difference from the onboard sound you have, and trust me it does make a huge difference.

@Rafass @Gamer_4_Fun @gamefreak215jd

When gaming my fps regularly goes above 60fps and honestly, I can't tell. Don't get me wrong, 30-60 I can most definately notice a difference. I thought the whole point of 120fps was for 3d as you need to output 2 streams so 60fps each.

When you are talking about playing at 120hz, are you talking 3d or just standard?

@gamefreak215jd if they look like they do now, maybe, if they push the graphics, no chance, you can't put good enough hardware for that kind of performance in a console and still make it affordable, if you want spectacular performance like that you need a good PC.

@Imperiacommando @MAD_AI It's weaker graphic wise just like any other multiplatform game, and needs a very powerful rig to run the game on high setings.

Awesome news.

I hope CDProjekt RED doesnt' sell themselves to some big company like EA or Activision.

The Witcher series and the dev's support have been awesome, so far. I hope it will be like this in the future as well.

@quigonzel @jorge69696 They mean PC and other platforms which will be able to run it . Like Mac , Linux and may be steam box . If it comes to consoles then it won't be before 2015 . They haven't used word console , right now they are only sure about PC version and clearly stated "PC" , same move that they did with the development of The Witcher 2 , exact same statement .

I liked the Witcher 2 better than the Elder Scrolls games. I have trouble staying interested in the meandering Elder Scrolls games. I hope going "open world" won't dilute the story aspect of the Witcher. Plus, the one comment that scares me is "40 minutes to travel from one end to another on horseback" as it sounds like it could be tedious to travel.
