The Witcher TV Series In Development For Netflix

Bewitching.

The Witcher is being adapted into a TV series for Netflix, with Platige Image--a production company that worked on the video game series--involved in its creation.

The series looks to be based on the eight-part novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, instead of the games. Sapkowski will be working on the English language drama series as a creative consultant.

Now Playing: GS News Update: The Witcher TV Series In Development For Netflix

"Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar," said Erik Barmack, Netflix's vice president of international series. "We couldn't be more excited about bringing The Witcher saga to Netflix members around the world."

Sapkowski added: "I'm thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over 30 years writing. I'm excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life."

Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) are executive producers on the project. From Platige, Tomek Baginski, who has worked on Oscar nominated short The Cathedral, and Jarek Sawko, will be contributing to the series.

Platige worked alongside developer CD Projekt RED on the cinematics for The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

"The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world," explained Daniel and Brown. "The characters are original, funny, and constantly surprising, and we can't wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling."

Baginiski and Sawko continued: "There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts."

The Witcher video game series, meanwhile, has come to an end, for now. Developer CD Projekt RED initially said the third game would be the last in the series. However, following the widespread critical and commercial success of the title, it has softened on the idea of returning to the franchise.

In March studio executives said that the series was conceived as a trilogy, making a fourth game in protagonist Geralt's story difficult. However, a new game wasn't impossible. The Witcher franchise has now reached 25 million units sold across the trilogy. CD Projekt RED is currently working on Cyberpunk 2077.

I hope that, whoever ends up playing Geralt, they dub in Doug Cockle's voice.

I'm happy for the creator who made the mistake of not taking royalties from the games. At least here he will get his due.

Also it would be better to leave the Witcher game series alone after 3.

@yukushi: Especially if they made 1 and 2 with Witcher 3s engine and combat system. That would be a dream collection.

@yukushi: You can get the Witcher 1 and 2 for about $3-4 on sale and Witcher 3 is normally half price every other week.

@rolento25: But you have to play on PC for PS4 users and Witcher 2 is a real memory hog.

They'll make it TV-MA again and ruin it for anyone with a family. Netflix originals seems to cater only to people who watch shows alone.

@siarhei: If you've read the books, it's a very mature storyline to begin with. If they want to stay true to the source material, it will probably not be one for the kiddies.

@siarhei: Ruin it? Since when is anything Witcher for children? Graphic evil monsters, violence, dismemberment, gory deaths, nudity, sex...making this anything other than an MA, show for ADULTS, would be ruining Witcher. Regular TV airwaves are FILLED with sanitized, SAFE, kids/family/PG/PG13 level entertainment...networks like Showtime and HBO, and services like Netflix do a great job of bringing less censored, more adult oriented shows that would never make it to air on ABC or TNT. Didn't Netflix make Fuller House, go watch that.

@siarhei: The Witcher is far from a family show lol... It better be TV-MA to stay true to the source.

@siarhei: Why would it be anything other than TV-MA? I haven't played the games, but I've read one of the books, and it's definitely not suitable for children.

PS - I have young children and have to play/watch some things when they're asleep/away. It's a sacrifice we have to make as parents.

Interesting.

Probably has the best chance of doing some kind of justice to the series. I understand the temptation to make it into a movie but something like that would no doubt cut out many of the things (characters, quests, interactions, etc…) that people of the franchise love.

Like almost every videogame to movie adaptation it probably would be a poor reflection of the series as a whole if they tried to limit it to a 2 or 2 and a half hour experience. I still have my reservations about anything Hollywood tries to adapt but the format they have chosen is a good start.

-SERIES>MOVIE NINJA APPROVED-

@videogameninja: Youre wrong. Its not videogame to movie adaptation - its book series to movie adaptation. Sapkowski created this whole thing, the rich lore, the characters etc. and while CDPRed did a good job with Witcher games they borrowed a lot from already estabilished universe.

@videogameninja: Gave you an upvote Ninja, but it is not strictly speaking a video game to movie adaptation. They are making it based on the novels (think GOT) and apparently have nothing to do with the game or CDPR. I think that improves the chance of it being sth good, actually.

The Witcher has great lore, and Wild Hunt has proven that the lore can be translated to the TV-screen. Looking forward to the series already.
