THQ sales, losses nearly double

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine ships 1.2 million; publisher tops forecast with $146 million in sales, $92 million in net losses; new "exciting core title" to be announced next month.

The September release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine sparked sales for THQ but couldn't improve the company's bottom line. THQ today reported its financial results for the three months ended September 30, revealing that Space Marine shipped 1.2 million copies to retailers as the publisher posted revenues and net losses that both nearly doubled year-over-year.

Titus racked up 1.2 million new notches on his bolter.
Titus racked up 1.2 million new notches on his bolter.

For the quarter, THQ reported sales of $146 million, up 89 percent from $77.1 million for the same quarter last year. While the publisher's sales nearly doubled, so too did its net losses. The quarter saw THQ post a net loss of $92.4 million, compared to $47 million in red ink for the same period the year before.

Despite the losses, THQ expressed optimism for the future. The publisher expects its October-December quarter--anchored by Saints Row: The Third, WWE '12, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 launches of the uDraw Game Tablet--to be the company's biggest ever in terms of revenues and profits. In a post-earnings conference call, THQ CEO Brian Farrell said preorders for Saints Row: The Third and WWE '12 are both up significantly over the preceding installments in those series.

While the uDraw is set to launch before year's end, the game THQ described as a "killer app" for the peripheral--Disney Animator--has been delayed. In the conference call, THQ CFO Paul Pucino said Disney Animator has been pushed from its original March 2012 launch window and is now planned to debut on the Wii U and uDraw in the company's fiscal 2013, which runs from April 2012 to March 2013.

Finally, Farrell said THQ has more up its sleeve. Specifically, he teased that the publisher has "one more exciting core title that will be unveiled next month."

Space Marine casts players as Captain Titus of the Ultramarine chapter of the iconic Warhammer 40,000 fighting force, one of humanity's last hopes in an intergalactic war against the sinister Orks. Players are charged with defending an Imperial Forge World from the Orkish invasion, a task made more complicated when the forces of Chaos make their presence known.

@squidshoggoth True, but by now the mainstream community market is actually tainting other game franchises and it sickens me. Such as the stupid CoD vs. BF crap that's going down (That is obvious), but now since the confirmation of GTAV, both GTA and Saints fans are at a complete dispute, and the rivalry is following the same idiotic pattern as BF vs CoD. 1. The games play nothing a like 2. They're made for completely different age groups (CoDs are Tweens, BF's are adults / Saint's are Tweens/ GTA's are adults, by adults I mean 18+, also I'm an adult and I love Saints) 3. One is mostly combat focused, the other is strategy focused 4. One looks realistic, the other looks like a cartoon 5. One is meant to implement strategy, the other is meant to be zany and silly. See the pattern? My point is that now these mainstream rivalries are affecting other game franchises... and the abundance of Gears fans bashing 40k Space Marines shows there is a rivalry insuring in these two games as well, which is shocking because Gears already has an unnecessary rivalry with Uncharted, more games with the same pattern as I listed.

This explains everything... They are short on money, EA must have promised them money and they sell their games on Origin, dooming Steam. Just when Steam was figuring a way of "trading games" and making it better for us gamers... EA smells the money though. God help us if EA manages our digital game distribution stuff.

@dxBIGBOSSxb indeed, but douchebags need to be offloaded somewhere. personally i think the mainstream is fitting for them, after all almost everything mainstream is nothing but mindless sheep praising something.

I really think THQ's November Games Release of Saints Row: The Third and WWE'12 are reallying going to show companies who's better. Im not a huge WWE fan but i still take the time to play for the fun of it. Im more of a Saints Row Saga guy, and by the looks of it alot more people then i expected is as well. So I really think that THQ is going to get over any issue that they are having.

They should stop making everything but Saints Row and some WWE games (for those people who always buy em') the other games aren't gonna sell, sorry. THQ hasn't become a reputable developer yet like Ubisoft did with GRAW and Assassin's Creed. In order to sell games well your reputation must be worthwhile, you get this rep by making REALLY GOOD GAMES.

In my opinion, and from my limited knowledge about the company - THQ has made some bad decisions this year and it costed them a few great title(S). I'm talking about Homefront here. The game was supposed to have it all, Red Dawn writer, spot on concept... etc. But they pushed it out before it was done - yeah guys let's just wrap this up!? What were they thinking? And then no dedicated server on what was looking like a pretty decent multiplayer shooter... I don't think the guy in charge over there has any idea what gaming is all about. You know that "let's meet the deadline" "fasttrack" kinda guy. While I say that, I don't think Duke Nukem Forever has set a good precedent for the "done when it's done" moto. And that brings us to Gearbox Software....

If all of your games are selling well and your still losing money it shows your higher ups don't know how to run a company well.

Well if I have my math right they went from a profit of 30 million last year to 53 million this year. So they made 23 million more this year than last year. This is actually good news...so why do I feel like the article is suggesting THQ is in trouble?

Dawn of War 1 with winter and DC, Metro 2033 were absolute incredible to play. DoW 2 and Space Marine felt very shallow. I dunno, getting nervous. THQ do put together reasonably good Warhammer games, and would like it to continue. Get those profits up THQ.

@OreoPoptart As @xHOJUx, I liked Metro 2033 too. I think most people who disliked Metro 2033 did so because they thought it would be another "cod like" action shooter. it IS NOT a shooter, it's a survival horror game, just like the original Resident Evil (does anyone remember that title anyway?). Yeah, that's the why weapons in the game isn't so easy to shoot, ammo isn't so easy to find and the action pace is frequently stoped between levels, when you stop to breath in the stations. In other words: an absolutely audacious and amusing game.

Taking the profits minus losses they end up over 50 million $ in the green. That's a good thing, why the negative angle on the story?

Red Faction: Armageddon had more of the 'feel' of the original games. Guerilla felt thw opposite of that. It was open world and takes place outside. Armageddon adheared to the origins of Red Faction by keeping it underground, dark and more linear. Also, I'm very choosy about open world games. Red Dead Redemption and Prototype are two of the few I actually enjoy. The Fallout games as well but those are more 'open world' RPG than 'open world' Sandbox.

There must be something a bit odd going on at THQ if they double their sales, and yet also double their losses. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but the idea is to sell stuff to make more money to make more stuff to sell, which doesn't really work if selling more stuff makes you lose money.

@Brokenhope69 WHAT? you have it backwards my friend. and I think MOST red faction fans side with me. While I really like Armageddon. It was not a good red faction game. good game... yes. good red faction. no. gurilla was amazing. and the addation of aliens to red faction universe is now perminent. it can not simply be magicly undone. the game was always mans struggle agianst mars and each other. while the aliens were fun, they were a terrible cheap addition to the red faction world. AND to show how juvline it at who ever's idea it was. they kept calling them aliens! BUT they were from mars. so they were martians. and the humans are the ALIENS!

thq is probably one of my favorite companies. none of their games are quite AAA quilty, but all of their games are super fun, and unique. yeah saints row is a GTA clone, but so are 50 other sand box games. THQ games like Saints Row have far more flavor than most games out there, same with red faction, de blob, etc etc etc.

Looks like supporting yourself with casual/non-gaming stuff (this uDraw thingy) is becoming a lifeboat for certain companies. Hope this won't pull them away from making hcore titles.

When it comes to the W40K IP, everyone talks about Space Marine. It's ok, my only complaint being that they could have mixed up the enemies and environments more. No one even talks about DoW2 though. No one who liked it, liked it all that much. At best it was ok, but at worst it was utter garbage compared to the first DoW. Kind of like Red Faction Guerrilla and Armageddon.

I have a lot of respect for THQ. They took a lot of risks with Metro 2033, Stalker, etc. and they published amazing games (Warhammer, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, etc.). I hope they'll do better in the future. Can't wait for their next sale on Steam.

I don't think it's their games or marketing that are the problem, it's the fans. Gamers are generally disrespectful little welts.
