THQ sales, losses nearly double

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine ships 1.2 million; publisher tops forecast with $146 million in sales, $92 million in net losses; new "exciting core title" to be announced next month.

The September release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine sparked sales for THQ but couldn't improve the company's bottom line. THQ today reported its financial results for the three months ended September 30, revealing that Space Marine shipped 1.2 million copies to retailers as the publisher posted revenues and net losses that both nearly doubled year-over-year.

Titus racked up 1.2 million new notches on his bolter.
Titus racked up 1.2 million new notches on his bolter.

For the quarter, THQ reported sales of $146 million, up 89 percent from $77.1 million for the same quarter last year. While the publisher's sales nearly doubled, so too did its net losses. The quarter saw THQ post a net loss of $92.4 million, compared to $47 million in red ink for the same period the year before.

Despite the losses, THQ expressed optimism for the future. The publisher expects its October-December quarter--anchored by Saints Row: The Third, WWE '12, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 launches of the uDraw Game Tablet--to be the company's biggest ever in terms of revenues and profits. In a post-earnings conference call, THQ CEO Brian Farrell said preorders for Saints Row: The Third and WWE '12 are both up significantly over the preceding installments in those series.

While the uDraw is set to launch before year's end, the game THQ described as a "killer app" for the peripheral--Disney Animator--has been delayed. In the conference call, THQ CFO Paul Pucino said Disney Animator has been pushed from its original March 2012 launch window and is now planned to debut on the Wii U and uDraw in the company's fiscal 2013, which runs from April 2012 to March 2013.

Finally, Farrell said THQ has more up its sleeve. Specifically, he teased that the publisher has "one more exciting core title that will be unveiled next month."

Space Marine casts players as Captain Titus of the Ultramarine chapter of the iconic Warhammer 40,000 fighting force, one of humanity's last hopes in an intergalactic war against the sinister Orks. Players are charged with defending an Imperial Forge World from the Orkish invasion, a task made more complicated when the forces of Chaos make their presence known.

Assuming that THQ is meaning that the phrase "core" means "money-making", I suppose that the possibilities for the "one more exciting core title" are: Possibility #1: The next WWE All-Stars game (if THQ is modest about its definition of money-making - all of its versions supposedly sold a few hundred thousand copies combined, though I can only surmise this from VGChartz, which is only good for very rough figures. Possibility #2: The next WWE Smackdown VS Raw game - typically the one for 2012. the 2011 version (released in 2010) is no slouch in sales, as are the previous games. UPDATE: Apparently WWE '12 will be the next game. Pardon me for not knowing much about the wrestling entertainment business. :P Possibility #3: Some variant of video game UFC, with a different title other than "Undisputed".

People keep thinking I'm knocking SR3, when all I say is that I'm not going to praise the greatness of a game that isn't even out, yet. If it turns out to be all that, then great, but come on. I'm just saying we don't know yet, so it shouldn't be an example of how well THQ is doing.

THQ is banking on Saints Row, a mediocre WWE series game and a periphreal game/device to create a solid 4th quarter sales figure? I am not hating on any game here, but from a business perspective (and with the eye of a gamer with common sense), I think THQ needs to reevaluate its future ambitions, licenses and prospects, less they go the way of other studios which became lost in the mediocre and obscure. They have done great work with the 40K license, and it has grown immensely from days of Firewarrior on PS2 to the RTS to Space Marine, and I hope to see more of the like. I think it should also be noted that aside from solid license names, what garners praise, awards and primarily investors is a unique, original game that creates a new "world" full of future possibilities, characters and sequels.

These guy seriously need to start making/publishing better games. I haven't enjoyed playing one of their games in a long time. The only THQ game I bought recently is Metro 2033 for $5 on Steam to use as a benchmark.

@j0abell Saints Row alone has been handled very well by THQ. Saints Row 2 had many of it's predecessors faults fixed, and the amount of added features made a more deserving and well made game. If even HALF the stuff in SRTT is true, than it shows they are a very competent company and can make a real, true game franchise out of what was essentially just a GTA clone to begin with but has now become it's own personal entity.

To be honest I'm surprised it sold decently, I thought it was very much an obscure game in front of the other big hitters coming out. Still glad to see other games doing well.

@KoLBEH @squidshoggoth @Meteor7 Agreed, and while even though Space Marines lacked the budget the mainstream games have (CoD, Battlefield, Gears, Uncharted, Halo, Killzone, etc.) it held up pretty well. Most review were 8's, promting people to invest into an enjoyable game and it shows. I honestly didn't think 1.2 million was gonna be possible for this game. Don't get me wrong, I was hyped as hell about the game, and still have my copy and play it often, but that's just because I'm a huge 40k fan, and I honestly thought this game was gonna bomb, because all I ever heard for months watching the demos, reading articles, and consistently checking for updates on forums was nothing but Gears fans bashing, and hating on the game for NO reason, and when the game released they were shocked to find out it was NOTHING like Gears, and Epic games themselves had to post online that W40k was their inspiration to begin with and that their fans are being ridiculous. The fanboys aside, and my love of the series, the game on it's own is a pretty decent one, worth a purchase, if only people would stop worshiping mainstream. :)

I support THQ with some of its franchises, mainly W40k, or anything Relic, but they have waaay too many crap games that for some reason continue to get produced. If they at least break even on these franchises, cartoon movies and kids network games, then fine. If not, its time to cut them out. What exactly are their losses?

@loopy_101 - If milking WWE pays for more stuff like Saints Row and Space Marine, then they should keep it up. At least they're investing in projects that aren't just cookie-cutter sequels of their big hits (even though I quite like them, and I wouldn't call SRTT exactly cookie-cutter.)

@jcbullen sales have been down this year so it is sort of worrying for all those involved in gaming. As a gamer I think it's obviously because devs have started shoveling junk and throw away games at us expecting us to snap them up, when we really don't give care. Nobody can say games aren't selling when all the well thought out games are doing great and all the bad games are failing. Most of the good games this year are only coming out since September.

could be Dawn of War 3, because relic said it's been in production since a while now. Sure they confirmed the rumors about Dow3 being in production, but they didn't really officially announce it with trailer/ release date and so on.

Maybe they should stop making crap sequels and trying to suck the life out of IPs that deserve a more serious effort. Now everyone's going on about SR3, but it's all hype and with THQ's track record lately, I don't know. It could just be another huge letdown.

Played homefront demo all summer on PS3 because of dismal economy, once they announced demo was ending joined Gamefly just to get it. Despite all the negativity f***ing love this game. Maybe its just for us old dudes that appreciate a decent well thought out scenario & appreciate getting to play in our own back yards.

I know Space Marine received pretty average reactions from reviewers, but it has been one of the only wholesome game I have played this year. I hope this kind of financial situation wont repel THQ from investing in a sequel!
