Timothee Chalamet Reveals Important Acting Advice He Received: No Hard Drugs And No Superhero Movies

"One of my heroes--I can't say who or he'd kick my ass--he put his arm around me the first night we met and gave me some advice. No hard drugs and no superhero movies."

Actor Timothee Chalamet has revealed the important advice he received from one of his "heroes," and it might not be what you'd expect. Speaking to Time Magazine, Chalamet declined to share the name of the person, but he did impart the wisdom he received.

"One of my heroes--I can't say who or he'd kick my ass--he put his arm around me the first night we met and gave me some advice. No hard drugs and no superhero movies," Chalamet said.

Chalamet's career has been taking off since he starred in 2017's Call Me By Your Name and received an Academy Award nomination for his leading role. Before that, he played Matthew McConaughey's son in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. One of his next major projects is movie Dune, which is getting great reviews ahead of its release in the US on December 22.

He is also lined up to play a young Willy Wonka in the movie Wonka from Paddington director Paul King. Chalamet recently revealed the first images from the film, showing off his Wonka costume. The movie will be at least in part a musical, as Chalamet told Time that he recently spent time at the world famous Abbey Road studios to record music.

"I felt out of my league," He said. "Like I was desecrating history! It's not mining the darker emotions in life, it's a celebration of being off-center and of being O.K. with the weirder parts of you that don't quite fit in."

I don't think that they don't want to act in a superhero movie because they're not prestigious, they just kill your career. After 3-5 or damn even 7 movies playing the same character people will not stop identifying you with him/her. Typecasting is the name for that.

@JimmyCos: Right. It happened to everyone involved in Star Wars except Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill only escaped it by technicality of transitioning to voicework (which, admittedly, he is very good at). It's the same thing with big superhero movies. Long-term success in Hollywood requires acting talent and versatility, not just a pretty face and a barrel chest.

@BLKCrystilMage: "Long-term success in Hollywood requires acting talent and versatility".

Not necessarily. Schwarzenegger played the same meathead role for how long? All he had to do to pack in the crowds was flex, and shoot about 10,000 people in every movie. What about Bruce Willis? Mostly the same meathead character for the bulk of his career as well, (minus all the flexing since he was never really that built). The Rock? Vin Diesel? Statham? And let's be totally honest here, I absolutely ADORE Keanu Reeves, but he couldn't act his way out of a wet paper sack.

I'm not saying that these people aren't awesome, and I'm definitely not saying that they don't have any talent. But acting talent? Versatility? That's seriously debatable.

@thecupidstunts: Acting goes beyond crying on camera. I doub you will say that just because Keanu doesn't do Othello like Kennet Branagah, it not an actor that is willing to spend hundreds (if not thousands) of hours on the shooting range, or practicing his lines.

Acting is integral, but it's true that some actors are betten than other on some fields, and some are more integrals than other. Di Caprio it's a good example: everybody knows that Leo stops exactly at the required mark, but you will never saw him being the next terminator or the next Cobretti...

Which is why I specifically indicated that I wasn't trying to say they don't have talent. I can absolutely appreciate the physicality and preparation that goes into those types of roles.

@thecupidstunts: Schwarzenegger and Stallone were action stars. They were at their peaks in the 80's when you could get away with doing things like that for more than 2 or 3 films. But even then, what are arguably their most famous roles are both in movies that are considered classics. Rocky is the quintessential underdog story, and Judgment Day was groundbreaking not just for its action and pioneering special effects, but its characters and story.

Consider how many stinkers Stallone was in after the 80's, and how frequently Arnold has been mocked (affectionately or otherwise) over the years, and I think the pattern holds.

@BLKCrystilMage: I understand what you're saying. Doesn't change the fact that having longevity in Hollywood does not mean that someone has to have actual acting talent.

@thecupidstunts: The point is, starring in flashy movies lacking in substance won't give you as many career options as being able to act in a variety of roles will, and being defined by a role in which you don't have to do anything but look pretty isn't a great way to sell yourself to Hollywood producers and casting directors.

@BLKCrystilMage: I understand your point completely, and I don't disagree with what you're saying. I'm just saying that there will always be a place in movies for people who can't actually act well. They can spend their entire careers in roles that don't require actual acting chops, and can absolutely draw huge crowds and command big bank.

Sounds like DiCaprio. He once said you will never see him in a superhero movie.

I agree with him on the whole superhero movies thing. They're money makers, but they're also dull and empty with very few exceptions.

One question thou.

No superhero movies, but joining another attempt at Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, although this is touted to be a "prequel", is a good idea?

Another Willy Wonka reboot is hardly more prestigious than a superhero movie, just saying.

Also, maybe not the best advice, as some of the most successful actors in the industry have had prominent superhero roles

@P00DGE: That really depends on how you define "successful", and which actors you're referring to. Scarlett Johannson and RDJ, for instance, had film careers long before they were in superhero movies, so they don't count. Michael Keaton wasn't in the kind of superhero movie that Chalamet was warned off of, so neither does he. Chris Pratt seems to be a big name these days, but I'd give it another 5 or 10 years to see if he really stands the test of time.

@BLKCrystilMage: the advice to stay away from superhero movies implies it is a bad career move, which is absolutely not true. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and many many other very successful actors were barely known before their superhero roles. And like you said, many well established actors did superhero movies and it didnt kill their career in any way, but often propelled it even further

@P00DGE: Again, it's too early to make that call. If the Chrises and Toms are still getting roles in another 4 or 5 years, THEN you can say that getting discovered in superhero movies didn't kill their careers.

Also, you're thinking too much in terms of profit. Not every actor is just in it to make a buck, some of them actually want to take more serious roles and win awards and that sort of thing. Having your name associated with big comic book franchises first and foremost makes that exponentially more difficult, especially when you've done nothing but for near on a decade.

I had never heard of this kid until this year, but now I hear about him almost every day, even though he’s been in just about nothing. I don’t really get it, but we’ll see if the new Wonka movie ends up being any good.

You might want to correct your article: Dune is out in the US on October 22, not December.
