Tomb Raider reboot coming to Mac

Feral Interactive porting action game to Mac later this year; unclear if DLC and microtransactions will be available.

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot will be released on Mac later this year via a port from Feral Interactive, the company announced today.

"We're excited to bring Tomb Raider to the Mac, and in doing so introduce a new audience to Lara Croft's original story," Square Enix head of product development Darrell Gallagher said. "This is one more step on the road to achieving everything we wanted with the game."

Details regarding pricing, system requirements, and multiplayer support will be announced at a later date, Feral Interactive said.

It was not mentioned if Tomb Raider's various downloadable expansions or numerous microtransactions would be supported on the Mac version of the game.

Tomb Raider launched in March 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Despite having the strongest first-week sales in franchise history and achieving 4 million copies sold overall, the game failed to meet commercial expectations for Square Enix.

Crystal Dynamics is currently working on a sequel for next-generation consoles.

@sephsplace Give 'em a little bit of time after SteamOS is generally available... Then we'll see a nice-sized flock of ports to lil'chubs.

As an aside, I really enjoyed hooking up my HDTV to my computer for this game. Console sized graphics with PC level of detail and resolution. Kinda gives you an idea of what Next gen consoles will look like, basically.

@pip3dream I highly recommend leaving your gaming PC attached to your HDTV. I recommend getting one of those service trays (like "breakfast in bed" trays from Target, BBB, or wherever), and flip it upside down for your wireless keyboard & mouse. PC + HDTV + couch = WIN.

I literally just finished this game today. I loved it and would probably put it in my top 20 games of all time. On a side note this is why developers need to be careful with getting rid of used games and rentals. After my last few experiences with Tomb Raider games I had no interest in this game but because I could rent it I tried and will be buying this one eventually and will probably buy the next one around launc.

You know SE is complaining that the last 3 AAA games they put out have failed sales wise. Hitman:Absolution, Sleeping Dogs and this. Now in the US, all 3 of those games were DIGITAL only for PC. There was no physical PC copies. And SE is saying TR sold 4 million PHYSICAL copies. If SE added Digital copies, I guarantee you that adds at least another 2 million copies worldwide if not more.

Do companies write off Digital copies like 'oh Steam's not gonna pay us so let's not include that in stock calls and shut down devs left and right'. Last time I checked, Steam said they kept 30% of the sale and gave 70% to the dev compared to retail where those numbers are usually switched. If you make more off Digital, wouldn't you want to include those numbers and consider dropping physical?

Until publishers add Digital sales to the equation, they have no right to complain if a game exceeds the copies it was expected to sell.

And if developers looked beyond that abomination that is Microsoft Windows, they'd see a significant increase in sales...

I don't know how big the Mac OS userbase is, but the Linux userbase is (a LOT!) bigger than people give it credit for, not to mention the expected success of the upcoming Steam Machines.

If they're whinging that this didn't sell enough, they have no one to blame but themselves and their own short-sightedness...

When I was in school back in 2001 there were very few games for mac. I did manage to find Age of Empires and it was amazing. I'm sure there are at least ten more games by now!

Good luck with running the game on an Apple computer. The cheapest iMac that can play this with decent settings will set you back 1.8k.

Porting games to OSX must be a great business. You're not selling games at retail price, and probably cutting a good bit to the original developers, but working with OSX isn't hard. And the content is already there. I do it for small personal user things here and there.

This is pretty good title to bring to OSX. For me, it was a console game. And I never really had it in me to complete it 100 percent. Though if it's specs are low enough to play on my Mac, I might just play it on my Desktop every so often and do the tedious boring task when I'm away from home with my Macbook. The game had SO much that was a chore, but most of it led to something fun, you just REALLY had to work hard to have fun in this game. Might actually buy this from Steam to play on my PC and Mac. Honestly I never thought I would actually do this.

Oh, and the best part is that this opens up the path for Linux distros to get ports as well. Maybe Ferral and Aspyr can train their team to work on OSX and Linux. It'd create more jobs, and bring more games to more platforms. Maybe even sink Windows...probably not, but I can dream.

Can't wait for SteamOS. I hate the sight of Windows. I only boot into that garbage when I want to play games. My PC is nothing but a toy at the moment.

Maybe... But a lot of developers are still VERY anti-Linux.

Hopefully that will change with Steam OS, which is a Linux-based operating system (it actually shares the same Debian base as Ubuntu, the world's most-used Linux-based operating system)... But time will tell - some "key" developers have repeatedly indicated that they have little faith in the upcoming Steam Machines (oh I can't wait for them to be proven wrong!).

Now if only they had a Mac with a good enough graphics card to run this game on a decent setting.

@canuckbiker They do. They can come with high end video cards. Mac and PC are the same. Just the name, the OS, and price are not the same.

@2tonjunk @canuckbiker The most powerful graphic card for apple computers is the 5870, which came out in 2009. It will run this game at 1080p, ultra settings at 24fps, but it will cost you $2700 without monitor, or $3850, with 27" monitor.

@2tonjunk @banana23man Or you could spend less than an entry level mac mini and play this game on ultra/1080p and get 40+ fps.
