Ubisoft Loves That Microsoft Is Buying Activision, And Here's Why

CEO Yves Guillemot believes the deal is a good thing and shows that Ubisoft is on the right path.

During Ubisoft's latest investor briefing this week, CEO Yves Guillemot was asked for his thoughts around Microsoft's deal to buy Activision Blizzard, and he's a fan. He said the deal helps show how valuable IP is. Not only that, but Guillemot said Microsoft looking to buy Activision Blizzard in part for its mobile game business with King and Candy Crush helps to validate Ubisoft's own investments in the mobile market.

"I think it's good news that the transaction can go through because it really shows the power of IPs, and where the industry is going. So there will be lots of opportunities in the future for all the companies," he said. "It also shows the value of IPs that can be on console and PC, but also mobile and become more worldwide brands. That's a fantastic opportunity. Microsoft is saying that the mobile part of the Activision deal is important. So all the investment we are making to be stronger on mobile is also in line with that."

Now Playing: Best Ubisoft Forward Trailers 2023

Some of Ubisoft's upcoming mobile games include a new Assassin's Creed game for Netflix, Assassin's Creed Jade, Rainbow Six Mobile, and The Division: Resurgence.

In 2022, it was reported that multiple companies were studying Ubisoft, with the suggestion being that these unnamed companies might be interested in buying the company. However, no deal has ever materialized, and the Guillemot family remains Ubisoft's biggest investor.

As for the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal, the companies recently agreed to extend the merger deadline to October 2023. The extension was due in part to the appeals process in the UK and Microsoft needing more time to make its case. In the US, Microsoft and Activision secured a partial victory recently in its battle with the FTC.

What worries me is that too many companies are merging and too many companies are being purchased. At this rate, we’ll be having 3-4 AAA companies that control the gaming market, and this if we’re lucky!

Before anyone listens to Yves Guillemot. I'll remind you that he is the idiot who put "Beyond Good and Evil 2", "Prince of Persia remake", and "Skull and Bones" in development hell. And quickly pushed games like "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Frontline", and "Hyper Scape". Two video games that were forgotten within seconds of their reveal.

So, he's not the smartest of game CEOs.

Honestly, too many corporate buyouts is really bad for creativity and leads to more monopolistic businesses. I deal with this firsthand and it’s not the best outcome for any industry.

@patriotman: for decades no matter what kind of industry they are part of all companies does is replicating whatever society wants and therefore for decades basically all games has the same and about the same. for example when witcher 3 became so popular assassin's creed series turned into some BS RPG witcher's creed lol. in movies because of such business mentality even the script is not apropos for it but they always force romance and lots of pointless actions to satisfy every kind of people. in that regard real creativity in video gaming died around 2005 when real deal gamers were part of video game development and they had passion to develop a game. for a long time some programmers who copy paste codes on internet try to develop some AAA games, they don't actually play games but they are just into it for money. as a result they release digital garbage like cyberpunk 2077 lmao. and the worst is popularity of another industry can affect other industry too. like just because netflix got popular all new games are just interactive story programs in which you watch for hours but play a little. video gaming already died long time ago. all we can hope for is indie video game developers

blizzard was dying for years and when activision came blizzard started to die in more agony so now perhaps Microsoft can save it so we can play decent games or not as always anyway. but if Microsoft only care about mobile games then real deal gamers has no care about all this situation because real deal gamers has no interest in mobile "games". mobile games mostly played by housewives while they take care of their baby or something lol

I liked starcraft 1 and diablo 2 for how fun and high on testosterone with killer music these games are in which most of the video games in existence lacks these 3 and all they can be is some edgy teeny BS like how call of duty series became. then blizzard got soft and nerdy and therefore they released sci-fi redneck starcraft 2 and nerdy softy pussy diablo 3 and since then blizzard dying lol

Yves Guillemot approving of the transaction is by far the most damning thing I've heard about it. It's like a dictator patting you on the shoulder and saying, "I like the way you run this place". At worst it's a major red flag that what you're doing is very, very wrong. At best, it's deeply disconcerting and kind of insulting just to have had it happen.

Well with an install base in the billions hell yea all these corpora.. game companies are keen off of microtranctioning themselves billions off of lesser quality stuff or else they are limited time before they bail if there's no profits like apex.. cod mobile rakes in alot microsoft are gonna get that cheese ..and I can't remember if thats take two that owns tencent or if tencent made cod mobile but cheap chinese made games makes money and gaming has been tainted by the greed of the business side of things , here's hoping those Ubisoft games are halfway decent not sure why mobile can't just be another platform without getting the cheaper version of things lot of tech surpasses the switch as far as power is concerned but no development accept the occasional pc indie

This freaking sucks. I generally see Ubisoft as the least sketchy of the big-3 non-console-creating video game publishers (Activision being the worst, EA in the middle, then Ubisoft being my favorite) but this is definitely the stupidest opinion I've ever heard them get behind.

I strongly agree with @mediastupid1 that subscription services where nothing is actually sold to us will be the death of the economy in the future. It's just reminding me of the Great Depression where people invested in non-physical property so much that it eventually caught up to the economy before people realized it was killing it. Relating that note to the article, I just see publishers (rather than developers) time and time again siding with greed and the stupidity that comes with it and therefore Ubisoft believing Microsoft is perpetuating any good ideas in the gaming industry anymore is downright laughable, depressing, and scary. They don't realize the seemingly good investment choices they choose now won't hold up once those investment choices actually go through and then bite them back in the future.

*Me observing the video game industry economic collapse in about 10-15 years*: As Todd Howard from Bethesda meme-ably said, "Who's laughing now?"

Gaming as a whole is on a downward spiral and surprise surprise Microsoft if leading it.i don't think the young generation i.e the 17 to 30 year old realize how bad xbox as a brand is destroying physical and game preservation. call me a fan what ever, I have been part of this industry since the 2600. Saw the crash, and now seeing Microsoft pushing gaming services where you don't actually own your games and are a pawn to their terms. I miss the days of collecting, enjoying gaming as a niche hobby, Thanks Microsoft for popularizing what OnLive tried and thankfully failed at.

@mediastupid1: I'm not too worried. Gamers want good games more than a value package. And Nintendo and Sony are providing that. While Microsoft isn't doing anything that groundbreaking or interesting to make it stand out from the crowd, outside of "Games for cheap".

@mediastupid1: The scariest thing to me is the control they hold over you and your library. A little less than a year ago, I was one of the unlucky people that received an erroneous weeklong suspension when they were, allegedly, testing out some sort of AI that sweeps for inappropriate profile icon pictures -- mine was the famous Conker shot where he's sitting in the king's chair wearing a crown with his legs open while sipping milk.

Not only did this happen to thousands of us, but they refused to reverse the suspensions or even acknowledge the error. You get no detailed reason why- the only reason we figured it out was because we all banded together on Reddit and discovered that all our profile pics had been removed. Worse, they have a "3 strikes, you're out" policy on Xbox.

So god forbid this happens two more times; I own hundreds of digital Xbox titles across every generation. I've been a Live subscriber literally since day one when they launched it with the port of PSO I&II. If that account got banned, I would be devastated.

Needless to say, I ceased purchasing cross platform titles on my Series X. Now, especially seeing as they killed retail emulator support and seem incapable of putting out a compelling title that isn't named HiFi Rush, that system only gets used while I'm (slowly) clearing titles from my totally unreasonable backlog. Every new release gets purchased on my PS5, although they aren't exactly on my good list, either; the injustice and pettiness of basically bricking people's PS5s who has the audacity of sharing their free PS4 games you received when purchasing the system during the launch window just enraged me, and I wasn't even one of their victims. Can't imagine the devastation these people felt, and if I get one more person tell me "it was against the terms- their fault" I will lose it. Who tf reads ANY of those absurd, overlong, intentionally deceptive EULAs?

I'd buy physical, but more and more titles ship in a state where the disc may as well be a fancy receipt for the download.

@mediastupid1: Long as GamePass doesn't completely replace ownership (which probably won't happen in at least the lifetimes of those of us who grew up with the 2600), I think we'll be OK. There HAD to be something to fill in the void left by video stores going out of business.

@YukoAsho: That's just it though microsoft is goin for that. I respect the fact of competition, gives variety, but to jist.blindly.buy something due to the fact, uh oh were sinking let's grab what we can to try.and stay relavent is not good. I my self enjoy physical, I enjoy looking at my large collection of games and playing something I own especially from an older console. Bad game or not, I still OWN it and NOOne can take it from me. GamepASS,you don't own anything you are at their mercy and I don't like that,it's a form of control and gaming is a form of relaxing and get away not controlled by some jealous company sinking in popularity.

@mediastupid1: Oh I'm with you there. However, I don't think it's random chance that Microsoft's attempts to move away from game ownership has coincided with their troubles - Halo going to pot, no one buying Xbox consoles over PlayStation or even Switch, complete lack of exclusives, etc.

Microsoft is clearly desperate, as evidenced by the AB buyout, because they simply don't want to put in the work to put a compelling product out. Just buy stuff and pray for the best.

Honestly, would anyone be surprised if Series X was the last Microsoft console? I would personally be sad because I've had a great time with my Series X despite Microsoft's best efforts, but not surprised.

@mediastupid1: Its not only me,many others see that you pull made up theories or facts you cannot back up for your thesys.

Your statements are statements, not factual and not backed up by any facts.
You didnt provided any fact (a link, a quote etc) untill today to back up any of it.

You present your opinion as a fact and that is how you word it.

Example above:
"Gaming as a whole is on a downward spiral and surprise surprise Microsoft if leading it."

Xbox never led gaming or was influecing enough to move the market, was in third place for most of the time.
The spiral (if there is any) didnt started all of sudden but i must started much earlier.

Therefore i can easily pull out that Sony, who dominated the market, was responsible for the spiral of happenings.
-Didnt Sony allow and embraced MTX in games on their plattform?
-Didnt Sony bought Gaikai in order to put games for streaming and renting?
-Didnt Sony brought PSN+ where you simply pay a sub to have access to games?

Its a silly comment (combined with some facts to make it look like i gave it effort) of mine but its as silly as yours.

Doesnt Sony have an equivalent to Gamepass (minus Day 1 games) on their system?
The only thing which stops Sony from day 1 games is they think its not sustainable!!! Its all about money!

If it were sustainable to Sony, they would do the same as Xbox.
And i truly believe you would applaud Sony for doing it but things are Xbox is doing it and its the dawn of gaming.

Or you make fun of some things Xbox (deserved or not) where Sony (which you are fan of) did or does the same.
Like you said "while Microsoft is constantly adding part 4, 5 ,7 9, to all their dead horse ips, ill take sony and originality ANY day." few days ago...it was so easy to counter.

@mediastupid1: Had me until you said you said you don't care if people disagree. Look, work is stressful. Yes. You can't look at everything Gamespot or the rest of the net posts on this topic or related topics. You don't have the time or leisure at work to use a search engine or related tools to fact-check or provide a source to any ongoing debate you are in the middle of on the internet. That all makes sense. Not caring about why others disagree on the source of a debate is not going to help win a debate. Stubbornness is an inherently negative trait.

I would enjoy discussing any subject further with you, though, alongside @sladakrobot because you both sound intelligent and like you're passionate about your takes so far. I did not see sladak's removed comments, mind you, and his comments having been reported and deleted are a red flag for me, on the other hand.

People disagree on opinions, if you are expecting people to disagree with your comment then you havent given facts.

"counter all you want. meaningless to me"
Why...do you think all i would say are lies/nonsense.
I think i gave you enough examples how Sony does the same with their IPs.
If you would apply the same standards/critics toward PS like you apply to Xbox...

@sladakrobot: a simple wiki search at the origins of xbox shows gates was jealous and worried because of how powerful at the time the ps2 they would infringe on pc empire. so the molester himself gates created the xbox. why do I call gates a molester? he went to epstiens Island 36 times knowing what that sick guy was doin, that was a fact and he was confronted on tv about it. so call me.bias but that reason alone for what gates did going to that island is enough to be biased and against that brand.

@mediastupid1: Microsoft worried that Sony could own the "home computer" market back then.

That is why they needed to enter the console market.

Nothing to do with jealousy, just business.

Never researched what Bill Gates was doing so i have no opinion that.

Maybe others can/will comment on that.

@restatbonfire: Buy them, 100% play them for posterity, sell them. Simple. Gamepass and other sub services such as Netflix are imo reducing society's interactions with each other IRL and binging any given media really only became a socially 'accepted' term because of these services. I seriously miss discussing my favorite games and movies at my local Blockbuster with the bored employees! And heading to movie theaters with friends instead of their gross couches! Etc.

@sladakrobot: No... the Atari VCS 2600 was the original term for the 2600 and potentially the most-used in PAL and Asian territories. However, none of my friends today or my Dad who has gamed on PC since the '80s could have understood me had I asked them, "Did you ever hear of the VCS or the Atari VCS?" Had I added the '2600' to the end, that would have given it away to my Father. But I have literally never spoken to anybody in the States who was alive when the system released or who has at least heard of it since then call it the 'VCS 2600'. In fact, the newest Atari console released in 2020 has simply been dubbed the 'Atari VCS' because that initialization never really took off in usage too well, so they decided to reuse it as a call-back for the fans that recognized it.

Would you kindly be able to provide a source on if the VCS 2600 was truly the most commonly-used term for the Atari VCS 2600 in your country or territory?

Lastly, your time-travel joke is creative yet unnecessary. You owned a 2600 yourself, yet you believed @mediastupid1 typing '2600' was an apparent typo of the year '2006'. Uh-huh.

At least i never saw him/her write about their gaming history before.

Its the first time i saw of anyone naming it just 2600.

You had to add VCS or Atari in front to make everybody know.

If i wrote i am gaming since the 800, would you guess i meant the Atari VCS 800 or i game since the 80s with a possible typo?

@sladakrobot: I would have guessed you were still splitting hairs on the 2006 joke. There was no Atari VCS 800. Had you mentioned you had been gaming since the 5200, however, I would have immediately implied since the Atari 5200 instead of 2005. Please provide a source that adding 'VCS' alone would have let everybody know what they meant versus simply putting 'Atari' before the 2600.

First of all, i never said or claimed that.
You reply to this part:

"You had to add VCS or Atari in front to make everybody know."

Please check my comment...

I wrote how noone says just 2600...its either VCS or Atari in front.

The OP corrected him/herself and replied "apparently you don't know what the 2600 is? I get it now. Sorry, Atari 2600 was a console"

If you go to every possible article,it always says either Atari VCS, Atari 2600 or VCS 2600.
Check please the sites of Atari Museum, Wiki or any other site which deals with legacy consoles.

The terms used in the market are the following dependend on the version and region:

Video Computer System (VCS) above all
Atari 2600
Atari 2600A
Atari 2800
Atari 5200
Atari 7800
Sears Tele-Games Video Arcade
Sears Video Arcade II
Unimex Atari VCS 800
VCS 800 (new version in works since the year 2017)

I would have guessed you were still splitting hairs on the 2006 joke.

Just let it go, you are beating a dead horse by now.
2006 was more logic to me than Atari VCS 2600 given the op's history of comments.

"Unimex Atari VCS800"

It says basically that the Atari VCS console which was distributed in West Germany by the company Unimex goes by the name Unimex Atari VCS 800.
1981 Atari themselves took over the distribution of the console Atari VCS 800 in West Germany.

Some sources. They say the Atari VCS was the original name for the system, but that hasn't been the common name for the 2600 in literally 41 years.

@sladakrobot: You are intolerable and I've hated speaking to you now that I've discovered how selfish you are. Get out of here.

@sladakrobot: Right. You're intelligent with words but you sure aren't emotionally intelligent. Learning when to end an argument when you know they're trying to turn it into a flame war takes patience.

@Leboyo56: I dont want to turn this into a war but i think i was proven right even with your sources presented.
You call it selfish but how else to stand for the things you think you are right about?

Maybe we think of the same but argue differently.

I will leave it at that.

peace

Probably Ubisoft is scooping out Activision Linkedin feeds and hoping Microsoft doesn't disappoint the Summer Interns while they are receiving gifts and merch. Very nauseating

@xboxplayer1: You're probably right. Problem for ol' Yves is that Ubisoft has absolutely nothing approaching the appeal of CoD or the ubiquity of King's mobile games. Microsoft isn't going to be buying them any time soon. Sony? Maybe, if they don't expect Microsoft to honor their promises not to degrade CoD after the regulatory spotlight is off them I can see them wanting expand on the Tom Clancy games and FarCry...
