Ubisoft Loves That Microsoft Is Buying Activision, And Here's Why

CEO Yves Guillemot believes the deal is a good thing and shows that Ubisoft is on the right path.

During Ubisoft's latest investor briefing this week, CEO Yves Guillemot was asked for his thoughts around Microsoft's deal to buy Activision Blizzard, and he's a fan. He said the deal helps show how valuable IP is. Not only that, but Guillemot said Microsoft looking to buy Activision Blizzard in part for its mobile game business with King and Candy Crush helps to validate Ubisoft's own investments in the mobile market.

"I think it's good news that the transaction can go through because it really shows the power of IPs, and where the industry is going. So there will be lots of opportunities in the future for all the companies," he said. "It also shows the value of IPs that can be on console and PC, but also mobile and become more worldwide brands. That's a fantastic opportunity. Microsoft is saying that the mobile part of the Activision deal is important. So all the investment we are making to be stronger on mobile is also in line with that."

Some of Ubisoft's upcoming mobile games include a new Assassin's Creed game for Netflix, Assassin's Creed Jade, Rainbow Six Mobile, and The Division: Resurgence.

In 2022, it was reported that multiple companies were studying Ubisoft, with the suggestion being that these unnamed companies might be interested in buying the company. However, no deal has ever materialized, and the Guillemot family remains Ubisoft's biggest investor.

As for the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal, the companies recently agreed to extend the merger deadline to October 2023. The extension was due in part to the appeals process in the UK and Microsoft needing more time to make its case. In the US, Microsoft and Activision secured a partial victory recently in its battle with the FTC.

I wish every game had the environmental detail that Massive pours into their Division games. Bravo boys.

So, this is just the corporate version of a reassurance thread.

@fanboyman: I don't know, man. If EA eats Rockstar and MS continues to eat, someone might get hungry enough to eat Ubi.

Nothing delights investors quite as much as having their company get sold. Ol' Yves knows this.

EA acquiring Rockstar/2K? That ain't happening, they won't have enough, especially after GTA6.

@hardwenzen: EA could buy Rockstar/2k and have Billions, lefts man. EA has major deep pockets at this points. They hold all the licenses to the NBA, PGA and NFL. don't count them out.

@xboxplayer1: EA makes a lot of money from those sports games, no doubt, but let's not act like they don't spend a pretty absurd amount of money on those licences.

Actually, has EA gotten back into Basketball? I haven't seen an EA NBA game since the PS3 IIRC. NBA Basketball seems to be locked down to 2K (to the point where the NBA works with them on the 2K League), much like MLB is locked to Sony.

I don't think you understand how big GTA/Rockstar is. Outside of Sony and MS, nobody could/would be acquiring 2K. Of course there's other companies like Tencent, etc that could, but from the big publishers like Ubi, Square, EA, etc, nobody would touch 2K.

@hardwenzen: Sony can't afford Rockstar/2k never could really. Microsoft could but that deal would be stopped because they now own COD, If anything Rockstar would just stay 3rd party at this point.

@xboxplayer1: It won't be viable for Sony to acquire them, but they certainly could.

@hardwenzen: no they couldn't Sony would have to sell off major components of it's company to even have enough money to file the paperwork. Sony isn't work close to 100 billion dollars as Ubisoft would cost them more than 70 billion dollars to buy.

@hardwenzen: Yeah, Activision is probably the only company worth that kind of scratch. Ubi MIGHT be worth half that.

Not even. They might have a lot of IP's, but Ubi has been a failure for a long long time, so no way they're worth 30B+.
