UK's second-biggest supermarket stops stocking Wii U

Wal-Mart subsidiary Asda confirms that it is not stocking the Wii U in any of its 555 retail stores across the UK.

UK supermarket giant Asda, a subsidiary of US retailer Wal-Mart, is no longer stocking Nintendo's Wii U console at any of its 555 retail stores across the country.

No Caption Provided

The retailer says it will continue to stock selected Wii U titles through its online store, however. "Asda continues to offer customers a selection of Wii U games and accessories through Asda Direct, but these ranges are currently not on offer in Asda shops," said a spokesperson for the supermarket to CVG.

"Asda will stock [Wii U] games on a title-by-title merit basis as they come along through Asda Direct. We will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner," concluded the UK's second-biggest supermarket.

Speaking to MCV, Asda says that it only ever offered the Wii U in 100 stores, but that it is removing the console from stores to make way for more successful hardware, including the 3DS.

Furthermore, Asda said that it will continue stocking the Wii U online but is currently out of stock due to a recent sale on the hardware. In previous months, Asda has repeatedly slashed the prices of 3DS hardware to shift stock. The retailer is still accepting preorders for Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, both of which are due to launch later this year.

Nintendo refused to comment on the situation, but said it was "looking forward" to the Wii U's year ahead.

"Nintendo UK does not comment on specific business practices with individual retailers. However, as we have seen with Nintendo 3DS, software sells hardware, and with titles such as Wonderful 101, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World already announced for this year as well as the recently released Pikmin 3 and New Super Luigi U having reached number 2 and number 6 in this week's chart respectively, we are looking forward to the year ahead on Wii U."

A report from early July stated that specialist US retailer GameStop was also gearing up to discontinue stocking the Wii U Basic.

A few years back the WiiU was considered just an upgrade to the Wii- addition of high def graphics and beefier OS -as reported in an article on Gamesindustryinternational and I think also polygon.

But with a waning market for the wii across UK, USA, brazil, and parts of Asia they decided instead of having to pay the price of launching a new console for 8th gen they would just release the Wii-Updated as a new console with a 'hook' gimmick (tablet) controller and take a profitable share of the market. While the brand will suffer they figured the stockpile of cash will help them in the long run to launch a late 8th gen or 9th gen system after world wide markets rebound.

Lesson to be learned here is - gamers are not some 10 yr old snot nose child crying for something for Christmas and even Nintendo fan boys are now adults with kids, careers, and tastes that lean toward quality . (well most fanboys have). In the next gen they will have to take the Sony approach:

Work with devs to re-right the wrongs of 7th gen systems, put out a quality product at a competitive price point (this is a razor to blade market still yet), and most importantly concentrate on the games, - games, games, games- fe, fi. fo fum, we got the goddamn games son. That will be how you win the customers.

Personally I do not care who wins console wars just as long as those who are in it bring it. Us gamers will be the winners then.

It's getting worse and worse for Nintendo. Between April-June they only shifted 160,000 Wii U units which is half of what they sold between January and March of this year. However I do think that number should be higher for July-September's results if Pikmin 3's sales is anything to go by.

Maybe the Wii U will become a collectors item. There's so few of them sold, it'll be a rare item.

@Vodoo There will probably be 6 million Wii U's sold until their major sellers Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 releases.

But i have a very low serial number on my Wii U, it's below 20,000 so if there's anything special with it there's a slim chance of it becoming valuable.

I know, but then again, I've noticed JumpLeweegee2 making the same exact post is several other articles, I don't even see his posts in non-Nintendo related articles.

Speak for yourself though, I have a life. The first post was done at work while I was on break.

Simple, Good games for Wii U are still to come, and it was a huge mistake to launch the console without titles to help the success of wii u.

Look at new Ps4 and Xbox one, they did their homework and each console will launch with great titles supporting the launch of each console.

Great wii u games will launch this holidays and some even next year. After the new generation of consoles (ps4 and xbox one) are already in the market. That wait is a HUGE mistake from nintendo. They should act now.

So despite the misleading title, Asda will continue to sell Wii U consoles online, but not in store. That's fair enough and if the Wii U does start shifting units, then I am sure Asda may well reverse their decision.

Either this should serve as a stark warning to Nintendo that they need to get their backsides in gear and work doubly hard to make the Nintendo strike a chord with a large pool of customers.

The only way to make great games and hopefully Pikmin 3 will kick start the revolution.

@19James89 On every article that isn't favorable to nintendo there's someone who complains about the title. What were they supposed to use as a title? "Asda not stocking Wii U in stores, but will stock it online when they recover from sale-induced stocklessness?" Not exactly headline material.

Sony have done well to create such hype for their console, it now has to ensure it delivers, only time will tell on that front.

@shotgunice41 @19James89 There are dozens of unanswered questions that make the preorder rumors pointless at the moment.

Firstly, if the number of pre orders are so high, why are no figures about them being published?

Where is the prove this isn't just the retailers and the media hyping up the truth, as they have done so often before?

How does this actually affect the WiiU in the long term? There are very few crossover games that are on both the Wii U and the X1 or PS4 so if someone wants access to those games they will get multiple consoles. Most console gamers I know own either multiple consoles or (like me) have a PC with, probably, an abundance of steam games (or are still playing guild wars 1 but I suspect the sanity of that friend from time to time!).

I understand that not everyone has the money to afford more then a single console but people that do get a singular console are probably already have their sights on the console they want and won't change their mind so trying to influence them is difficult (Sony did well with E3 earlier on this year on this front).

@shotgunice41 I'd imagine next year is when those people will purchase a Wii U when there's a larger selection of games to choose from instead of old ports and shovelware at present.

I expect a price drop soon, followed by clearing out old stock. Whether they bother bringing out another form of WiiU for sale, who knows.

@Mugzippit The Wii U Premium includes stuff for over 150$.
24GB more flash memory (50$ in 2012)
Game bundled 50$
Charging cradle 25$
Gamepad stand (9$ in shop)
Sensor bar 25$

Basic pack cost only 40$ less and was the one that maybe could generate money. But when Basic Pack didn't sell, yes The Wii U is selling with a loss and i don't think a single game sale generates enough money to make up the loss on the console.

@Random_Matt Its being sold at a loss but only needs to have 1 game sold with it to turn a profit so unless there is a high number of people that don't buy a game with their games console then Nintendo is pretty much making a profit on every console sold.

Great deal whoever is interested, although does add to the doomed speculation considering it is cheap and stock is pretty low on the UK's best selling gaming shop.

@Kristan1711 Wait, a xbox 360 4gb arcade costs about 200 quids, Wii U is about 40% more powerful, you get Wii in the same package, the gamepad doesnt need additional charge-kit or batteries (unlike xbox360), Wii U has free internet multiplayer (save 50$ every year).

Oh, the xbox 360 doesnt play Nintendo games.

@Kristan1711 No they won't, the Wii U will shift units over Christmas.

While I doubt it will as high as the Xbox or PS4, I think the Wii U will have a positive holiday, especially with a strong finish to the year in terms of solid first and third party titles being released.
