UK's second-biggest supermarket stops stocking Wii U

Wal-Mart subsidiary Asda confirms that it is not stocking the Wii U in any of its 555 retail stores across the UK.

UK supermarket giant Asda, a subsidiary of US retailer Wal-Mart, is no longer stocking Nintendo's Wii U console at any of its 555 retail stores across the country.

The retailer says it will continue to stock selected Wii U titles through its online store, however. "Asda continues to offer customers a selection of Wii U games and accessories through Asda Direct, but these ranges are currently not on offer in Asda shops," said a spokesperson for the supermarket to CVG.

"Asda will stock [Wii U] games on a title-by-title merit basis as they come along through Asda Direct. We will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner," concluded the UK's second-biggest supermarket.

Speaking to MCV, Asda says that it only ever offered the Wii U in 100 stores, but that it is removing the console from stores to make way for more successful hardware, including the 3DS.

Furthermore, Asda said that it will continue stocking the Wii U online but is currently out of stock due to a recent sale on the hardware. In previous months, Asda has repeatedly slashed the prices of 3DS hardware to shift stock. The retailer is still accepting preorders for Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, both of which are due to launch later this year.

Nintendo refused to comment on the situation, but said it was "looking forward" to the Wii U's year ahead.

"Nintendo UK does not comment on specific business practices with individual retailers. However, as we have seen with Nintendo 3DS, software sells hardware, and with titles such as Wonderful 101, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World already announced for this year as well as the recently released Pikmin 3 and New Super Luigi U having reached number 2 and number 6 in this week's chart respectively, we are looking forward to the year ahead on Wii U."

A report from early July stated that specialist US retailer GameStop was also gearing up to discontinue stocking the Wii U Basic.

I knew this page would be full of Sony fanboys who's hatred for Nintendo still burns after DS, Wii and 3DS destroyed PSP, PS3 and Vita.

@wcwj26 To bad that casuals are really quick to abandon something for the next Flavor of the month (wiiu cough...), sorry but the wii was marketed as a toy not console for dedicated gamers.

@wcwj26 We Sony "Fanboys" don't hate Nintendo's hardware, just we objectively see that nobody gives a damn for them, Wii U it's a epic fail, the only thing maintaning Nintendo alive are the sales in Japan.

@Tidus1012 @wcwj26

Yet which handheld console does way more people seem to give a damn for? The answer to that right there invalidates your whole post.

@steve4123456789 @yavix Don't what? There will be plenty of games to buy. Dreamcast lasted three years, the Wii U hasn't even been out one whole year.

@yavix Dreamcast had loads of games to warrent the buy because I bought one when it came out. A console with no games is a shit console I don't care of your a fanboy, or work at nintendo. I'll tell you how it is if you won't accept it ok. Don't. :)

@steve4123456789 I don't need to justify anything. What matters is that I enjoy the games and systems I play. If the Wii U fails so be it, doesn't mean I still won't buy one or play one. The Dreamcast was a commercial failure, but gamers still love the system. Yeah I'm really in denial alright. What I've wasted is my time reposting to you. No point in wasting time on someone with such a narrow minded view.

I know what's going on here let me guess you picked up that piece of shit and your trying to justify the fact that you just wasted your money. And if anyone challenges that reality you freak out at the possiblity it actually might be a huck of dogshit that's failing anywhere but the USA. Denial is a terrible thing.

@steve4123456789 @yavix A game is game. It's either good or its bad. What you and a lot of people are doing is confusing family friendly, with kiddie. There is nothing wrong with being family friendly. I find it amazing that people act like its a dirty word when it comes to gaming.

@steve4123456789 I work in retail and we constantly sell out of our game systems. Anyway I was just messing with you until you said that crap at the end. What makes you the athority on what games, or gaming company is for children? Only immature idiots buy consoles, and games to try to prove they're mature grown ups. Real gamers could give a shit about that, because they're to busy having fun playing all games. Grow up seriously.

@yavix Sold them? That's a good one. Best sellers usually are well stocked. I don't know anyone who has a Wii U what's even sader I haven't heard the wii u mentioned in a sentence.

I find it hard to see anyone buy that crap anyway only people who still play nintendo are little kids, or overgrown kids who think its a NES or something. Most of which are in the USA.

they need to recall all their Wii Us in stores and rip the guts out put them in a new, bigger case that will fit a 250 GB HDD and give it a different name. Anything other than Wii. Then give them back to retailers and there you go. Wish they would add 2 GB of ram but I'd live with a HDD.

They could call it Wii R Sorry.

It wouldn't have a tablet controller and it wouldn't be obsolete 1 year after coming out. And it would have games.

@bunchanumbers That would be good if it wouldn't cost Nintendo so much money to do. The Hdd alone would increase the price of each unit.

I personally think Nintendo should market the system as the U.

@yavix well either way. The need for storage is going to be a big deal if they keep pushing these digital titles. Even the 32 GB for the premium bundle won't help their long term vision. They should have included a HDD from the beginning.

@bunchanumbers @yavix I agree, but so far I haven't downloaded much on my Wii U. When I get low I'll pick up a external hdd, they're pretty cheap. Especially since buying digital doesn't save you money at all, except on PC.

Yeah, most people don't want to have the system in advance of the good games, some of us did, but most won't, so when the games come, the systems will sell.
