UK's second-biggest supermarket stops stocking Wii U

Wal-Mart subsidiary Asda confirms that it is not stocking the Wii U in any of its 555 retail stores across the UK.

UK supermarket giant Asda, a subsidiary of US retailer Wal-Mart, is no longer stocking Nintendo's Wii U console at any of its 555 retail stores across the country.

No Caption Provided

The retailer says it will continue to stock selected Wii U titles through its online store, however. "Asda continues to offer customers a selection of Wii U games and accessories through Asda Direct, but these ranges are currently not on offer in Asda shops," said a spokesperson for the supermarket to CVG.

"Asda will stock [Wii U] games on a title-by-title merit basis as they come along through Asda Direct. We will continue to support Nintendo as a format holder partner," concluded the UK's second-biggest supermarket.

Speaking to MCV, Asda says that it only ever offered the Wii U in 100 stores, but that it is removing the console from stores to make way for more successful hardware, including the 3DS.

Furthermore, Asda said that it will continue stocking the Wii U online but is currently out of stock due to a recent sale on the hardware. In previous months, Asda has repeatedly slashed the prices of 3DS hardware to shift stock. The retailer is still accepting preorders for Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, both of which are due to launch later this year.

Nintendo refused to comment on the situation, but said it was "looking forward" to the Wii U's year ahead.

"Nintendo UK does not comment on specific business practices with individual retailers. However, as we have seen with Nintendo 3DS, software sells hardware, and with titles such as Wonderful 101, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World already announced for this year as well as the recently released Pikmin 3 and New Super Luigi U having reached number 2 and number 6 in this week's chart respectively, we are looking forward to the year ahead on Wii U."

A report from early July stated that specialist US retailer GameStop was also gearing up to discontinue stocking the Wii U Basic.

@dummpymonkey123 Game companies including Nintendo stopped trying to innovate since the one company most copied off of went under and split up its houses. Now they just rent out their aged mascot and outsource IPs and possibly release a game or two here and their.

Nintendo has been making the same games with prettier looking paint for years. They wouldn't be in this mess if they hadn't been so cheap with the parts to make the tablet controller. 2 years too late.

I only see them doing about as will as the Wii did come November. But if they don't keep a steady flow of games coming out, they are going under.

We'll see how well the new Zelda (not the remake of Wind Waker) will fare next year. From the sounds of it it might not appear till next summer...

@telaros @dummpymonkey123 Yeah had they spent more on tech the system would have been even more expensive, third party devs still would have ducked it, and they would be in even more of a mess. Sounds like a solid business plan to me.

@yavix Invest in cheap outdated tech that should of been released 2 years prior to its launch, just because they wanted to make it cheap enough, while Sony and MS were already beginning to create their successors?

That's a dumb business plan considering the price tag they launched with was still 400 bucks+ after tax.

No, I'd a postponed the system. I'd a waited to have a solid game line up that could keep feeding fans good to great games for the next 4-6 months after launch. Release only a few of my offerings so peoplehave stuff to look forward to, and not be so arrogant as to survive on a name and promises of EVENTUAL game releases.

Now we got them rushing out titles, a dude throwing a hissy-fit over people uploading scenes of the last game he released so no adventure or story mode or cutscenes are being included.

All I see is Nintendo rushing their team to release games as fast as they can before more retailers start abandoning the hardware in their stores like in the UK

I would rather wait for quality, as I used to until Nintendo once again showed little care for their fans when they are in the money, and wouldn't mind paying more for a system knowing it could compete with Next Gen.

Wii U under performs against an Xbox 360.Only thing it goes is a bigger capacity to hold data in its disc for this gen. An outdated bulky (that doesn't mean heavy because it feels hollow) tablet that really serves no real purpose in gaming. And the limited range to play the game off the Wii U sorta sucks =/

The Wii U could cost 200 bucks, and people would still buy a PS3 over it. let alone the fact currently has nothing worth buying it for. Unless you REALLY like New Super Mario Land. Which is fun... but not worth no 350-400 bucks with new gen around the corner for about as much with better online support and games in general.

I am already cringing at the low quality in the new Sonic game. You can see them trying to make this big world, but are unable to make it as smooth and clean as Sonic Generation was. In any case Nintendof'd up bad. To each their own, but I don't see Wii U support changing anytime this year. They don't have a new Zelda and they don't have a new Metroid. No, Windwaker is NICE bit it doesn't really count.

@dummpymonkey123 @JayQproductions being involved in the game? yea, having to look away from my TV (where my game is being played) to change an item in my inventory is really being involved with the game. The ONLY good thing about the Wii U's tablet controller is you can use it to play your game if someone else wants to use the TV.

Do British people get their gaming fix at the grocery store? Maybe its different over there, but this would only be big news to me if it was an entertainment store that discontinued the Wii U. Something like BestBuy, Gamespot, Amazon, etc.

@xcollector I thought the same thing. It's the term "supermarket." That word is meant as a grocery store here in the US, at least in NY it is.

@inthepastxx @xcollector .Asda is the UK's budget supermarket, competing against Tesco (which is the middle one) and Waitrose (which is the expensive high quality one). The budget one is the one not selling the Wii U.

Nintendo is giving off the impression of being a state of denial with a slight arrogance to it. Instead of shrugging this off, management at the company need to come with a new attitude of embracing solutions and ask themselves "What can we do to fix this problem? What can we do better?"

@GOGOHeadray @Jake518 They need to cut their loses and drop the Wii U down to $100-$150 to get what they can out of it while they go back to the labs and start on a new true next gen console to compete with Microsoft and Sony in 2 years since next gen will likely be around for about 10 years.

@JayQproductions @GOGOHeadray @Jake518 They would lose consumer confidence doing that; its what made sega bow out the business. Only thing they can really do at this point is ride it out and hope that sony or micrsoft go through another rrod or ylod.

They said the same about the Gamecube... The GBA was doing very well and the Gamecube was not, just like the 3DS and Wii U currently. It's different this time around though. Where the Gamecube failed was a complete lack of marketing at the time and Nintendo had kind of fallen off the map while Sony was enjoying remarkable success with the PSX & PS2, and while the prospect of the Xbox was intriguing, Nintendo were fading despite the GBA's success (There wasn't any handheld competition then.)

This time Nintendo are very much on the map, thanks to the success of the Wii and a strong marketing team, once those core 1st party titles come along, just like the 3DS, the Wii U will "U-turn". Once the hype of the PS4 and X1 wears off people will realize there's a shit ton of Wii U games to play and then the units will start to shift. Brand new HD Zelda anyone? Metroid Prime 4? This stuff will come out and it won't go ignored, that much is a certainty.

Also, for people who complain about the difference in hardware, lets not forget what history tells us about how horsepower means nothing in a console's success, in fact, all the evidence points to the contrary.

@Tee_Mal Thats alot of reviniost history. Nintendo was never off the map they just got blown out by better comp. Console over console Nintendos sales have fallen outside of the wii. Also usually the weaker system is at least somewhat on par with the stronger one to help negate the differeance never has a console before sold more when it was a full gen behind outside of the wii which sold to non;gamers.

@GOGOHeadray @Tee_Mal Console over console? OK, well the N64 wasn't unsuccessful, the SNES certainly wasn't, neither was the NES, their handheld line is as strong as it has ever been, the only reason the Wii U isn't selling is because there are no bloody games out for it. The gamecube did not get the marketing it deserved anyone who owned one would tell you about some of the great games on it.

A full generation behind in graphics perhaps, although I wouldn't go as far as to say that, PS4 and X1 graphics are not a giant leap up if you own a gaming PC. A gaming console should fundamentally play games, Nintendo happen to create many of the best franchises of games out there, games sell consoles. innovation sells consoles.

@Tee_Mal @GOGOHeadray The gamecube was a flop which caused Nintendo to panic and reevaluate how they were conducting busniess in the home console space. This of course led to the wii which was a drastic departure from the consoles before it made by nintendo. There is no two ways to spin this fact.

Also your def. of success is debatable since for the most part nintendo hasnt been able to keep up with the numbers thier competition are moving in the home console space. Also Im not sure why you bought up handhelds nintendo has done fine in that department and nothing I said stated they weren't.

Too your last point a majority of console gamers do not own gaming PC's; so that point is moot console gamers compare consoles to other consoles. Lastly, innovation doesn't sale consoles games do.
