Uncharted sets course for Hollywood

Sony-owned Columbia Pictures hires Hitman 2 writer Kyle Ward to pen big-screen adventure based on Nathan Drake's original PS3 outing.

Video game film adaptations haven't exactly reached the heights of cinematic art form. Though some bigger-budget efforts, like the original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, saw box office success, the majority of movies based on games are box-office duds and whipping boys. The most infamous are a string of cheap cash-ins by German director Uwe Boll--including BloodRayne, Postal, Alone in the Dark, has made his name a virtual punchline. Though not helmed by Boll, the last major game-based film to hit theaters, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, was both pummeled by critics and shunned by audiences.

Nathan's adventures may soon hit the big screen.
Nathan's adventures may soon hit the big screen.

That said, several upcoming game adaptations may buck the aforementioned trend. Uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has commissioned respected director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Queen) to work on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for Disney subsidiary Buena Vista Pictures, due out next summer. A big-screen version of BioShock is also in pre-production at Universal Studios, although it is currently on hold due to budget overruns and director Gore Verbinski's possible departure.

This week, another promising game-based film was revealed. Today, the Hollywood Reporter reports that Columbia Pictures--a division of Sony Pictures--is developing big-screen version of Drake's Fortune, the PlayStation 3 exclusive from Sony Computer Entertainment. Screenwriter Kyle Ward has been asked to pen a script which will follow the story of the video game, which starred Nathan Drake--an adventurer and descendant of British naval hero Sir Francis Drake--in search of the fabled lost city of El Dorado.

Ward is no stranger to game adaptations, having already written the in-limbo Kayne & Lynch movie and the just-greenlighted sequel to Hitman. He also wrote the script for the upcoming Michael Bay-produced thriller Fiasco Heights, which is currently in pre-production.

In 2007, Uncharted was released to critical acclaim and popular success. At its press conference during the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this month, Sony announced it had sold over 2.6 million copies worldwide. Its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, was the toast of the expo, and was named Best Game of E3 2009 by the Game Critics Awards jury. @Kiramasaki Whoever said that Verbinski was dropping Bioshock? Last i heard they were going through budget problems (uh-oh, this sounds like Halo...) but that Gore Verbinski was still commited to making this flick. I heard he even turned down another Pirates of the Caribbean movie(as if we need another...) to do Bioshock.

All right i'm going to repeat myself: Not that a possible good adaptation of Uncharted isn't a good idea, it's just that we're trudging through the same water all over again. Besides, currently, i think a lot more people are looking forward to Bioshock. I think Bioshock is the only movie that actually has potential to becoming a great movie. Gore Verbinski is the only director who can make the Bioshock video-game film adaptation. I mean think about it, what's Bishock about: it's scary and it's underwater. Now think Gore Verbinski: he's done scary (the ring) and he has most definitely done water (Pirates of the Caribbean). His resume alone says it all. I'm beginnig to wonder if they do make Uncharted? Won't it come off a bit Indiana Jonesish? That's how i think critics will look at it. But that doesn't mean that it won't be good. In the end, if Bioshock turns out to be a good movie, maybe there's still hope for Uncharted, however, if Bioshock fails, it goes to prove that video-games to film adaptations are destined to flop. But nobody should judge the future of these films by Tekken, i think we all know how that movie wil end. So it all depends on bioshock.

To be honest, I don't think you can go wrong with a Uncharted movie, but the fact that a law suit could surface, if it scripted to close to you know what movie. Other then that? I think this movie will do well. It for sure better not be another DB or SF mess all over again, but 9-10 my bets are all on it :P.

They made this movie a long time ago. It was called Raiders of the Lost Ark. Seriously though, the game and story are great for a video game, but I don't see it working out all that well as movie.

So they are going to make a movie based on a video game that borrowed all it's ideas from past Hollywood films? Yeah, that makes sense.

kiramasaki: maybe if you actually read a little bit more you'd see that they are making a bioshock movie...and no disrespect but i dont think halo is really worth making a movie...drakes fortune game in my opinion already did feel like a movie and it was great...as long as they dont screw around with everything and get rid of everything except the characters names and actually make it comparable to the game it should be very very good but thats just my opinion...

Omg instead making something worth watching like Halo or Bioshock or even Deadspace, they are doing Drake's. Although I suspect they could make this one cheap enough that it wont break the bank like the others causing delays and cancellations.

I would love to see Nathan Drake on the big screen, but I don't think it should follow the Drake's Fortune storyline. Naughty Dog should fight to keep the game stories and movie stories separate. The movie should be based on the Uncharted/Nathan Drake IP, not the game itself.

Boring game that is about as innovative as the next boring adventure shooter... so takes no risks, has a stupefied fan base that will serve as an initial crowd, and there is no need for real actors since the characters in the game paper thin... Hollywood picked the right game to make a movie about.

Uncharted already plays out a whole lot like an action movie. If it's too similar, people that have played the game might be kind of bored with the movie since it would basically be like watching someone else play the game. However, if they change too much then people are going to get upset...I hope they do a good job with it regardless.

It is impossible for me to have any optimism for a video game movie. Hollywood has burned that bridge long ago.

Yeah I don't really care for game to movie. The only thing worse is a movie to game. It goes to show that Hollywood can no longer come up with their own ideas. I guess we've known that for years though with all the releases of old tv shows made into movies. Someone in Hollywood needs to turn off their Nick At Nite.

@REA24409 If the author him/herself doesn't even enjoy/appreciate/understand the core of the original series, how the heck can he/she duplicate the fun and put it onto the big screen.

Not a good first sign if this is the script writer... My only hope is that if the movie IS going to be good, then they get the original mocap and voice actors of the characters to reprise their roles for the movie and make a bigger name for themselves. They're perfect because they already look almost exactly like their counterparts, and it looks to me like they're professional enough actors to do the job of a live action movie. It would be kind of different from the norm when I think about it, but who better to play the roles of these characters than the characters themselves? I'm certainly waiting until trailers are released before I pass judgment.

Video games turned into movies are usually disastrous. Good games don't necessarily make good movies. I only care about the game, sorry.

@Ihbchen It's not that hard to grasp the concept of Uncharted, all they have to do is play through the game once and they could get what to do and how to do it.

Unless the actor(or the writer) is actually a gamer and really enjoys Uncharted series, the movie won't be able to grab the essential of the game.

I'm just tired of hearing things that get box office success. Sure they got the money but it doesn't always mean it's a good movie overall.... I hope this game isn't butchered. I'm a little worried.

if this movie is live action i dont want to see some celebrity like brad pitt play Drake, i'd like to see someone who not many people have heard of, but look's so spot on to his looks. But also @ lukas1051 i have to agree with you there, nolan drake, the voice actor of drake really does look like drake. That'd be cool to not only get the original voice of drake but have the person playing the voice look like the character. I think that that would be a rare opportunity.

I knew this would happen!! What they should do is, now that I know what the people who made the voices of Drake, Elena and Sullivan, they should just get them to act it out, they look close enough to the actual characters. And what they should do is do something that has never really been done before. They should have every cutscene from the game in the movie (except the only difference this time is real actors) and from where the player takes over from the game, they should add other lines and their own scenes to the actors, cause I loved the story sooo much and it will be a shame not to see those parts of the game in the movie. That way, for us Uncharted fans get what we want. And for people who never played the game, will love the movie!
