Valve helped bring PC gaming out of the "dark ages" says Wasteland 2 dev

inXile's Brian Fargo of Fallout fame declares Valve the "saviors of the PC."

Half-Life and Portal studio Valve played a major role in bringing PC gaming out of the "dark ages," according to Brian Fargo, who is known for his work on the Fallout series and is now head of Wasteland 2 developer inXile Entertainment

"They're the saviors of the PC as far as I'm concerned," Fargo told Eurogamer in a new interview. "They've been great. You think about where we all were, kind of in the dark ages, when there was nothing. There was just flash."

Fargo praised the Steam platform for the way in which it breaks down traditional barriers through things like digital distribution, which allows developers to sell their games directly to consumers often without a publisher intermediary.

"[Valve has] opened up a way to get directly to the audience in a way that isn't politicized, or forces us to do exclusives or all the other things the console guys do." Fargo went on to say that the console guys (he likely means Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony), "put all sorts of guns to our heads" as it relates to publishing agreements.

Of course, Valve has total control over its Steam marketplace and could implement new and potentially restrictive measures if it wanted to. But Fargo doesn't see this happening.

"Valve has all this power but they don't wield it. They let us all work in an open system," he said. "So for that I can't say enough good things about them."

Blizzard Entertainment didn't hurt PC gaming either. Steam is awsome you don't have spend 60 dollars on a game and there are tons of them for any kind of niche you might have. Consoles don't have that luxury yet. Most of the console indie games are still in the dark age that the PC used to be in but it will get there. Wasteland 2 being a good example. Can you by it on a console, no. Say you are new to it and maybe you don't want to spend 40 dollars yet. You can get Fallout 1 & 2 or the original Wasteland for next to nothing. Not to mention a bunch of other similar games you can try in the strategy, rpgish sort of game like Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. I love my consoles too there just not there yet.

Oh so sad. Don't they realize that this IS the dark ages of PC gaming? Once upon a time, the consumer had a small sliver of control over their gaming experience.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't call it a dark age for PC so much as an uncertain time in the Industry, we are transitioning to all digital media, it is just part of progression but people don't know how to control it right now, but things will get better.

So delusional. You spend 2-3 times more on a PC gaming rig with half the life span of a console for what? slightly better resolution and textures? After a few years you're not playing games on Ultra anymore, so you might as well be on a console.

You have to worry about benchmarks, compatibility issues and upgrades when ever a new game comes out.

You don't get all the exclusives any more. (ex. GTAV Destiny)

Everything the PC once held domain over the consoles like online multiplayer, patches/fixes, DLC, Movies, TV, web browsing, app's...has now collapsed on the PC gaming industry. You have nothing left!

i'll still be playing my Xbox One 9-10 years from now...where will that expensive gaming rig of yours be then? I'm gonna guess slowly decaying in a landfill somewhere next to a full baby diaper and and chicken carcass.

<< LINK REMOVED >> GTAV is coming to PC. Destiny, can stay on consoles. Looks like a boring version of Borderlands. Also do u not know how to upgrade a computer? I upgrade my computer every couple of years, and that amount of money is far less than what you pay for on your games for your console (aka an old computer that you cant upgrade); and before you say "you spend so much more money buying games along with those computer components" i got two words for you - Steam Sales

My only issue with Steam is they let completely aweful games on their system... but then reject perfectly good ones.

Either have it completely open to all without an approval green light system, or improve the requirements needed to be green lit.

The lack of refunds is why this is an issue, so many shit games that should not even be considered a game are on there.

Granted in UK we are allowed refunds even if we put hours into the games now, even if Steam doesn't like it, tough tits, but the rest of the world do not have such luxury.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, but what defines "awful" and what defines "good" is personal opinion. You might find a game good where another thinks it sucks and vice versa. Like everything else, a little research into a game can go a long way.

Well, Steam HAS made pc gaming less of a hassle. Most of the drivers and updates I need to run a game are automatically downloaded. My only complaint with Steam is that other companies are allowed to add additional DRM. They REALLY need to change that.

UPlay and Rockstar Social Club are annoying as all hell. I pay for something, it is mine forever. Don't add bullshit install limits, or force me to download additional software.

At least GFWL is dead.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Actually in the fine print, according to steam you do not own shit. You are simply leasing a title under their discretion and may change at any time for any reason. Unlike a cd, lawnmower, car, painting, or console game - you cannot give it away, loan it out, resale it, or trade it in.

I agree with you, hate piracy but hate additional DRM adds that go against the gaming consumer in every way possible.

PC gaming was healthy before Steam. But then Microsoft kept shitting on it while their focus shifted to console gaming. During this time Steam has been swimming against the current to break free from Microsoft's shit. If Steam didn't exist PC gaming would be dead thanks to Microsoft. Hopefully we can all switch over to Linux sooner rather then later and finally get rid of Microsoft. Linux support does need to mature more though.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>They are not making a console. They are making a small form factor PC that is suppose to look like a console to trick all the console gamers into becoming pc gamers. If you tell a console gamer to become a PC gamer there is a road block that they automatically hit which prevents them from going any further. But it you tell them its not a PC even when it is then the road block doesn't exist anymore. Its retarded but so are people.

I am confused. Before Steam, was there an invisible despot in PC gaming that forced all sorts of restrictions on the game devs? There sure as hell is one now. Ok, ok, a benevolent despot.

I kinda regret contributing to Wasteland 2 now.

@Unfallen_Satan You do get devs are free to put games on Steam DRM free, right? That Valve isn't forcing them to make use of their DRM to sell a game on Steam?

I think someone made a list of all the games on it that are DRM free also.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You install it through Steam but it doesn't need Steam running to play it, essentially working like Amazon or Gog's download clients.

Most devs just choose to use the DRM part since well what reason do you have to uninstall Steam or not have it running at the time?

Until DRM does not dissappear nor does the Dark Age for me. More like the worst already happened (like when EA invented the online autentication DRM for Dead Space). I still purchase on Steam tough, but with online autentication and obviously no physical media I only get deal +50% deals. I only preordered 3 games since 2008, and last was Metro LL.

Sadly i was too hooked on WoW n Clubbin IRL to notice back then, once i quit WoW however, i came back to see my favourite platform riddled with shit like Resident Evil 4 & Modern Warfare 2 with p2p networking and other such consilitist, sad times, /vomit.

Also Steam wasn't selling games at first, think my first none valve purchase was Bad Company 2, within minutes i headed back to counter strike, it felt right.

Its an arguable point but even if that's true it doesn't change the fact that Valve has allowed Steam to slowly turn into the Apple App store of PC gaming. The user, unless they know what they are looking for, have to sift through piles of ported mobile games or ripped-off, broken, and re-released crap. If things keep up Steam will become a wasteland of broken dreams for actually good indie games and with an occasional oasis of good B, AA, and AAA games

<< LINK REMOVED >> Good point. I'm surprised they haven't improved the ability to browse in Steam. Most retail businesses spend too much time working on that. Steam almost doesn't give a crap whether people find games to buy or not. When I click on a game in a list of 100, then go back to the list it starts at the beginning of the list! Christ, even Ebay knows not to do crap like that.

To a degree that's true, though back before Steam the PC market was actually doing very well. We had our Half-Life, Quake, Battlefield, Unreal, CounterStrike, Fallout it was really the the PC's golden age before Steam.

Steam just made PC gaming a TON more accessible and simplistic, no more having to install a PC game using 4 discs instead it's just a giant virtual library.
