Valve helped bring PC gaming out of the "dark ages" says Wasteland 2 dev

inXile's Brian Fargo of Fallout fame declares Valve the "saviors of the PC."

Half-Life and Portal studio Valve played a major role in bringing PC gaming out of the "dark ages," according to Brian Fargo, who is known for his work on the Fallout series and is now head of Wasteland 2 developer inXile Entertainment

"They're the saviors of the PC as far as I'm concerned," Fargo told Eurogamer in a new interview. "They've been great. You think about where we all were, kind of in the dark ages, when there was nothing. There was just flash."

Fargo praised the Steam platform for the way in which it breaks down traditional barriers through things like digital distribution, which allows developers to sell their games directly to consumers often without a publisher intermediary.

"[Valve has] opened up a way to get directly to the audience in a way that isn't politicized, or forces us to do exclusives or all the other things the console guys do." Fargo went on to say that the console guys (he likely means Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony), "put all sorts of guns to our heads" as it relates to publishing agreements.

Of course, Valve has total control over its Steam marketplace and could implement new and potentially restrictive measures if it wanted to. But Fargo doesn't see this happening.

"Valve has all this power but they don't wield it. They let us all work in an open system," he said. "So for that I can't say enough good things about them."

Useless region-locking as well... I go to other legit sites that sell said region-locked games on Steam, and I can buy them... Steam O' Steam..

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>in brazil cases its devs, you cant buy ANY EA games from GG or GMG, or anyone else, its locked and you can only buy from BR Origin, also, some games cannot be sold throught steam because of the publisher, this happened to me with Bastion, Warner Bros was the pubi and in brazil they had a diff deal or something, the result was Bastion being pulled out of steam, but they fixed it and steam was selling it again, so i dont think all of the cases its valve, where do you live anyways?

Anyway... why is he charging 59.99 USD for his game? PC games are priced at 49.99 USD at most.

@qtmew Not anymore. More and more games are selling for pc at 59.99. Depends on the company. Ubi is really hitting the $60 mark on a regular basis.

@qtmew Because they only sell a digital deluxe edition before it's finished that comes with access to the beta. When it actually releases it's going to be $29.99.

Buying it right now means you're helping to fund it and paying form some extras, not just the game. You can preorder a DRM free copy from their website right for the normal price but it does not include the deluxe edition stuff or beta access.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> He's quite the saviour, lol. Steam has been awful lately with their false advertising of old releases as new brand new release, and no QA. Most of the games that we have been getting lately as "brand releases" have no M+K support, not even 720p support, sometimes even the controller does not work. Saviours of the industry can only be the biggest offenders or overtime, as they become massive, they will help destroy what they built. Steam needs comptetion, now it has monopoly over the PC market. Even their sales have been a bit off lately in AAA games compared to other sites.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> you know valve doesn't make or implement features on the sales sold on steam right? No 720p support, lol wut? My guess is you got burned on a game you bought for not looking what features it supported beforehand.

I don't think Valve had anything to do with it personally. I like to believe it was all the great games that were created by great developers that Valve had nothing to do with.

I agree, but nowdays they are really starting to lose their touch. All that "early access"-debacle and no real quality check might force people to go in other directions.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Did you even read what you linked to? :D From the Forbes article comes a few quotes that actually undermine what you were trying to say, like e.g. “However, the numbers in our investigation suggest that previously reported magnitudes in game piracy are too high.” and “The data reported by the industry are potentially biased, partially due to the interest of the industry to reduce piracy and thus potentially over-estimate the problem.”

Reading-comprehension, mate; it's a hard skill to master ;)
