Wal-Mart launches trade-in program [UPDATE]

Retailer now accepting software and hardware trade-ins; here's what they'll pay for your games and systems compared to GameStop where possible.

No Caption Provided

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Wal-Mart adjusted the trade-in values for many items. For the latest information, enter your game or system into this tool to find out what your wares are worth.

The original story is below.

Wal-Mart launched its highly touted video game trade-in program this week, going head-to-head with market leader GameStop. If you're stuck scratching your head about where to trade in your items, we've compiled a breakdown of trade-in values for popular games and systems at the competing retailers.

All values listed below represent in-store credit for items in working order. GameStop offers a cash option (less than in-store credit) while Wal-Mart offers in-store credit exclusively (but you can spend that on food and clothes!). For the purposes of this breakdown, we're only looking at in-store credit values.

Also, Wal-Mart only accepts hardware trade-ins via its website (they ship you a packaging label), while GameStop only accepts hardware trades via its brick-and-mortar stores. Finally, these prices are up-to-date as of today, though they are subject to change over time.

Something else to consider is that GameStop offers an additional 10% trade-in credit if you're a PowerUp Rewards member. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has no plans to offer a loyalty card. In short, you should view this breakdown as a guide and not a definitive document.

Hardware:

GameStop

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $357.50
  • 3DS XL - $97.50
  • Wii U - $156
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 3250GB) $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

Wal-Mart

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $375
  • 3DS XL - $105
  • Wii U - $120
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 320GB) - $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

Software:

Wal-Mart's trade-in website features a very handy tool that lets you plug in any game and determine its value. Unfortunately, GameStop only publishes a "Featured Trade Values" list, which is far from exhaustive. As such, direct comparisons between retailers becomes problematic. We have listed direct comparisons where possible.

GameStop

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $22.10
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Titanfall (Xbox One) - $35.10
  • Need for Speed: Rivals (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $35.10
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $13
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $32.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $28.60
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $32.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $28.60
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $15.60
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $22.10

Wal-Mart

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $29.40
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) $38.50
  • Need for Speed Rivals (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $41.58
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $18.90
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $38.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $33.88
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $38.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $33.88
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $18.48
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $26.18

That's where the direct comparisons end. But here are some more Wal-Mart data points for recently released games anyway.

  • Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One) - $29.40
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) - $21
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) - $32.89
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS4) - $16.54

Worst trade-in experience EVER!!! I went to Walmart yesterday because their trade values are higher than Gamestop and Best Buy. It took the CSR 30 FREAKING minutes to figure out how to do the trade, while the line continued to back up, but they finally figured it out. So then I took the credit and applied it to Infamous SS (for store pickup the same day). However, when I checked out online, I got an error message saying something went wrong. Then I went back 1 page and submitted again, without realizing everything defaulted to "ship to home"...

So I immediately called customer service and they said they can't change it to store pickup, but I could cancel and get a refund within 24 hours. The rep submitted a cancellation request and said I should get an email within a few hours. The email never came, so I called again today, only to find out my order had been shipped already.... to an address I haven't lived at in years. I never order anything from Walmart.com so obviously the shipping address was never updated. I asked them if they could change the delivery address and supposedly I'll be getting a call from a supervisor... YEAH RIGHT. So basically I have to wait 2 weeks to see if my package is forwarded to my current address. If not, someone else is getting a free PS4 game, I suppose.

In summary - It's NOT worth the hassle. Lesson learned.

Yes, trade in your stuff to Walmart, its like Germany just nationalized their stores and they lost billions financially as a result... oh wait that just happened. LOL.

This article is slightly skewed in favor of Walmart. Like it says in the article they don't count the 10% power up rewards. And honestly if you are not apower up rewards member for $15 a month and you shop more then 3 times a year at gamestop then you are an idiot. You easily make that money back in savings.

So for those $30 games that is an additional $3. Nor does The article take into account that gamestop is constantly doing bonus trade in of 30%. I smart person will still go to gamestop.

So in theory you could get closer to the same amount at each place. The only benefit of Walmart is being able to buy other things.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Don't forget the buy two get one used games power up rewards renewal coupon. I usually get 3 used games that recently came out so they're still $50+. That's $50 savings right there, not including the 10% off.

You get 425 if you trade in your Xbox One for a PS4 at Gamestop. I just traded mine in. Now it is a complete Sony gaming household here, well except for 3DS.

Darskspace is right, Walmart is offering crap for console trade ins. Good. I hope their trade system fails.

Didn't best buy start doing this last year? They weren't very successful from my understanding either. Of course Walmart can offer better competition which is a good thing since GameStop tends to screw over customers. *cough* xenoblade *cough* metroid *cough* ps4 camera

I plugged in a bunch of things into Walmart's trade-in search engine. Here are the values that I'm seeing after saying "Yes" to all questions:

3DS XL: $50

360 S w/ 320 hard drive: $55

PS4: $225.

Either the article is inaccurate, or Walmart has changed their values.

Only 16 bucks for Killzone? WoW. So this list tells me TWO things....1. The X box One is now permanently going to be $450 at Wal Mart and 2.The Wii u is practically worthless, a freaking new version of the 360 is almost as valuable.

smh, yall do realize that retailors do not pay the normal price for these consoles right? they pay a lot less and the sellers tell them what they suggest they go for. but all that aside, gamestop is in serious trouble. they been shitting on people for years and now they gonna pay.

This seems so shady hahah The ps4 for $375 through me the hardest. How are they gaining anything from that. No ones paying $375 for a used ps4 let alone $376 if they want a profit haha. I mean i guess it makes sense if its all store credit. But it still doesnt make sense for that high of a price for PS4 i mean xbox1 is 390 thats a 110 drop that makes sense. 25 off does not. Just sayinggggg

I agree with you. When I saw the ps4 value at $375 I didn't believe it. Then I realized the ps4 is still super popular and sold out all over. They will resell the ps4 for $375 very easily and also get ppl to buy games for it at the same time. So they are actually smart to do that.

They don't even offer a 320GB 360! Only limited edition consoles came with those or you could buy that hdd separately for $120. That drive alone costs more than the $110 they're offering.
