Wal-Mart launches trade-in program [UPDATE]

Retailer now accepting software and hardware trade-ins; here's what they'll pay for your games and systems compared to GameStop where possible.

No Caption Provided

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Wal-Mart adjusted the trade-in values for many items. For the latest information, enter your game or system into this tool to find out what your wares are worth.

The original story is below.

Wal-Mart launched its highly touted video game trade-in program this week, going head-to-head with market leader GameStop. If you're stuck scratching your head about where to trade in your items, we've compiled a breakdown of trade-in values for popular games and systems at the competing retailers.

All values listed below represent in-store credit for items in working order. GameStop offers a cash option (less than in-store credit) while Wal-Mart offers in-store credit exclusively (but you can spend that on food and clothes!). For the purposes of this breakdown, we're only looking at in-store credit values.

Also, Wal-Mart only accepts hardware trade-ins via its website (they ship you a packaging label), while GameStop only accepts hardware trades via its brick-and-mortar stores. Finally, these prices are up-to-date as of today, though they are subject to change over time.

Something else to consider is that GameStop offers an additional 10% trade-in credit if you're a PowerUp Rewards member. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has no plans to offer a loyalty card. In short, you should view this breakdown as a guide and not a definitive document.

Hardware:

GameStop

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $357.50
  • 3DS XL - $97.50
  • Wii U - $156
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 3250GB) $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

Wal-Mart

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $375
  • 3DS XL - $105
  • Wii U - $120
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 320GB) - $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

Software:

Wal-Mart's trade-in website features a very handy tool that lets you plug in any game and determine its value. Unfortunately, GameStop only publishes a "Featured Trade Values" list, which is far from exhaustive. As such, direct comparisons between retailers becomes problematic. We have listed direct comparisons where possible.

GameStop

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $22.10
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Titanfall (Xbox One) - $35.10
  • Need for Speed: Rivals (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $35.10
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $13
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $32.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $28.60
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $32.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $28.60
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $15.60
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $22.10

Wal-Mart

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $29.40
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) $38.50
  • Need for Speed Rivals (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $41.58
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $18.90
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $38.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $33.88
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $38.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $33.88
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $18.48
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $26.18

That's where the direct comparisons end. But here are some more Wal-Mart data points for recently released games anyway.

  • Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One) - $29.40
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) - $21
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) - $32.89
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS4) - $16.54

Dunno why they are comparing store credit values. Walmart dollars are practically the same thing as real dollars.

It's also another case of Walmart being less "scary".

When you go to a place like Gamestop they have promos, but you have to trust the staff to get you the most value for your trades. That can mean trusting their honesty but also simply their competence/knowledge of the system and promos. I took advantage of promos towards an Xbox One, doing multiple trades of several games over multiple visits. Most of the time it wasn't very confidence inspiring, having the two staff kinda fumbling around trying to see what would get me the best value, when to use a promo and when not to, and so on. Ultimately I was OK with the result, but how many average customers who aren't really into this stuff, say like a clueless parent, are going to go through that? They'd much rather punch in the titles on the website and know how much they'll get.

I rather watch walmart burn then supporting this company with my video gaming cast offs. As someone who use to work for these modern day slave drivers don't feed these Jackels let them choke on their ambitions and rot in their greed.

Giving out official trade-in values is nice. Again that's one of those things that will appeal greatly to the new crowd, people that don't normally trade in games. They don't want to waste time, they wanna go in knowing exactly how much money they will get.

I wonder if these GameStop prices include the extra 20% they started to give at stores near Walmarts. Because not everyone will get those prices if they live out in sticks (aka, rural America). I have 5 GameStop stores within 10mins of my house here in NY. Two of them are in the same shopping centers as Walmart and two more are located in the same shopping centers as Best Buy. The fifth one is in a mall. I'm curious if all 5 will offer the extra credit being that there's Walmart stores in a 10min drive.

I haven't shopped at gamestop since Amazon started stocking video games and products. 90% of the time you can get everything cheaper online (plus depending on the state in which you live, you also pay no taxes on top of already discounted prices -I bought my xbox one on amazon and saved $35 just by not having to pay sales tax!!!) with free two day shipping (this means release day delivery on preorders) for prime members. btw amazon has a trade in program as well.

BTW, does anyone remember GameCrazy??? Gamestop is doomed, it's only a matter of time.

Doubtful. Gamestop holds an immense amount of clout in the game industry. The can always match or exceed Walmarts offerings.

<< LINK REMOVED >> this is a joke right? Game stop has more clout than Wal Mart? The company who's main business model is forcing competitors out of existence by undercutting them. Nobody can match or exceed Wal marts offerings, thats the point

How much of GameStop trade-in profit do you think comes from kids begging their Mom to take them to GameStop? As soon as Mom finds out she can get Jr to shut up about his game at the same place she buys diapers and hairspray, Jr is never gonna see the inside of a GameStop again. There's more to factor into this than just number of retail locations and simple cost-benefit analysis of the trade/resale transaction cycle.

WalMart has SEVERAL product categories on which they intentionally lose money in order to get people in the store, because once you're there, chances are you'll buy other stuff. I'd bet this is planned to be one of them.

And/or, if WalMart is able to loosen GameStop's grip on the distribution/point-of-sale arm of the gaming industry, they're well-placed to alter certain aspects of the sales side of the industry to their benefit . . . like $60 games not being $60 anymore. Since their overhead is already covered and if they have the industry clout to pull it off (ie, a big enough distributor in terms of percent of total units sold to stand up to any complaints in the industry), they could easily start selling new games for $55 or even $50. THAT would certainly be enough to make most gamers shop there.

If this takes hold, it could be very interesting

@Blazen702 First, GameStop trade-in values change, sometimes every day. Second, GameStop often charges a "refurb fee". While there are guidelines, it's at the discretion of the employee ringing you up whether or not to charge it, and they aren't always clear about it. Third, some unscrupulous GameStop employees will "neglect" to ring all the trades in, and that "extra" stock has magically disappeared by the end of their shift. Not common, but it does happen.

Also, some of these values may have been recently increased just because of the competition from WalMart

No Walmart within 13 miles of where I live in Boston, and it sucks getting to. The easiest Walmart is 18 miles away, but...its 18 miles away.

Gamestop is close to work, so I usually by hard copy games there. I trade/buy older consoles from a store called Replay'd...a better value.

@seanwil545 HA! So true. Is it that we keep them out of this town or they know us New Englanders won't shop there?

Lemme guess... you're 13 miles from Marlborough and 18 miles from Framingham...
