Warhammer 40K MMO no longer an MMO

THQ revamping Dark Millennium to focus on immersive single-player and online multiplayer; 118 employees at Relic and Vigil studios being laid off as a result.

THQ's long-awaited Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer online game is no longer going to be massively multiplayer, as the publisher today announced a genre shift to turn Dark Millennium into a single-player game with some online multiplayer features.

Dark Millennium's development has taken an unexpected turn.
Dark Millennium's development has taken an unexpected turn.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO," THQ CEO Brian Farrell said in a statement. "However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features."

The change in focus will cost scores of THQ employees their jobs. The publisher said it is cutting 79 workers from the Austin, Texas-based Vigil Games and another 39 from Vancouver, British Columbia-based Relic Entertainment.

THQ said a release window for the project would be announced at a later date. For more on the game Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium was originally intended to be, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Long as it's fun to play, allows for customization, and gives you that feeling of being a walking, grunting, death machine clad in what appears to be an old time stove for the 1930s, and armed to the teeth, then a happy camper I shall be, MMO, or not.

@Meteor7 - Yeah, I agree. And I do however agree with both you and megakick that I would like to see some more Sci-Fi MMO's around. I've always loved Sci-Fi, never really been big on Fantasy. Especially the whole Tolkien, lord of the rings, high fantasy type. However a few games did make me enjoy it somewhat. But I will always love Starcraft over Warcraft if you know what i mean ^_^ ! And Total Annihilation, Dawn of War, Supreme Commander ..... Stargate .... The list of games and and Films is too big, you get the idea. Bring on the Sci-Fi !!! Oh yeah, totally psyched for Planetside 2 ^_^ , I never thought it would happen! (srry for the long posts)

@Pilch_R_eD as long as there is other factions, some MP co-op/PvP, and good SP then I still have faith.

@megakick there is still Planetside 2 at least if you want sci-fi. Still would be nice if there were more sci-fi MMOs out there.

I'm actually happy this won't be an MMO. And don't get me wrong, I like MMOG's, however, since it's been shown to make money there are just far too many devs trying to make an MMO out of their game. And an MMO is just such a huge and complex game / undertaking, the vast majority just can't bring to the plate what's required for the genre, especially on the quality side. And with some huge, bound to succeed titles like Guild Wars 2, and a bunch of highly anticipated F2P titles like Firefall There's just no more room for anything that's going to be less than a stellar quality MMO in my personal opinion. Alot of MMO's out recently, I would have much preferred to have been SP games with a possible MP component, simply because I feel they would have been better games that way. I'm sorry for all those who would of loved this however, assuming it would have been done right. I hope it turns out to be a good game in the direction it is now taking and still fulfills what you would have wanted it to be.

A lot of companies saw Blizzard's golden goose and decided to try to break into that market. Now, several years later, with the landscape strewn with failed MMOs or ones forced to offer the game for free, throwing that kind of investment into a glutted market doesn't look so good. As someone else said, better to cut costs now and recoup what you can.

better to bale out now rather than putting out a crap MMO. Besides, I liked the Warhammer Space Marine single player FPS game, and I d like to see more warhammer FPS.Perhaps even co op game with up to 4 people in a single player campaign, with online multi game(somthing like Left 4 Dead).

MMO would've been an entirely different experience that still wouldn't rule out anymore single player Warhammer games anyway. so you can't really call it a fix to the franchise or that anything was broken in the first place

What happened to 'If it's not broken, Don't fix it', I thought Warhammer 40K was doing well. That's a motto the COD franchise are far too familiar with.

I sometimes think WH40K would be served well as a cooperative, tactical shooter, or maybe even something like Savage...

@iluvOP - lol, franchises (eg. CoD) are the cancer killing creativity. I was seriously looking forward to an MMO with a darker "soul" to it, and a much grittier atmosphere. I'm quite disappointed this has reverted to a basic RPG, and have no further interest in this game. I personally find RPGs quite boring, much preferring the social interaction and competitive nature of MMOs or multi-player focused FPS games. As an MMO, I found this game extremely interesting, as an RPG, it's off my wish-list. GW2 don't disappoint!

When they change direction midstream like that, it really doesn't bode well for the game being worth caring about, one way or another. It just screams mismanaged shovelware, like they're just trying to toss us something marketable, rather than something that'll be any good.

Without sounding too harsh, put this game into the rubbish heap and forget about it. They clearly want to save themselfs and just get the game out asap with as little effort vs max cash, thus rush it out asap, make some money to recoup loses then move on. Star wars KOTOR clearly killed this game off.

As long as every faction is playable, good story implemented, and good gameplay this game will be as if it was made by god himself. I am sick of the Space Marines getting the spot light almost every game.

I feel so conflicted about this report. Hearing about one of my favorite game devs chopping so many people really sucks; however moving away from the MMO market is brilliant and I am glad for that change. The surprise success of Kingdoms of Amalur probably influenced this move, my bet. And this one will have one of the most iconic and unique IPs at the helm, so sky is the limit. Hopefully this does well so Vigil and Relic can hire those guys back, right?

Well, now I'm interested. I just hope this allows them to be adventurous with the content rather than what we saw with the decent, but fairly conservative, Space Marine. The choices at the end of a 40k RPG could be varying scales of apocalyptic genocide...and make sense...!

I only care for online and connecting with people. So if the online part of this game is going to be some cruddy 5 on 5 deathmatch, like most single player games with an online portion, I'm going to have to pass now.

@phatsanta Thanks, and i agree... The MMO market is difficult to break into, though youre right maybe the 40k world would have been interesting to see in that light. Nonetheless, id prefer a well thought out non MMO. Space Marine was a good start, they just need a bit more innovation.

I am happy to hear they are going to make the series have a Singleplayer component and more Action-esque oriented multiplayer. I am not pleased with the lay off however. It is a big sacrifice. Hope they get new jobs soon.

Mmm, I'm not really sure this is going to work as a not-mmo. it's nothing against THQ, WH40k, or even the staff. It's just that the game's been in development as an MMO. Unless they chuck ALL the work and start over, I see a game that may end up being quite generic for an RPG.
