Watch Dogs Fan Mod That Improves Graphics Gets Final Release

The fan mod that dramatically improves the graphics in Watch Dogs on PC has been updated yet again, with this most recent release being its final one, according to its creator.

In a post on his blog, modder Frederico "TheWorse" Rojas released version 1.0 of his mod, which introduces several new changes, including tweaking rain, the bloom effect during storms, and the game's camera. He explains, "This is the last release of my modification. I did my best to improve graphics and performance as much as I could without degrading the quality."

You can download two different versions of the mod: one featuring a texture pack from another modder, Maldo, that can help reduce stuttering; and one that doesn't include these textures.

The mod was originally released early last month on the Guru3D forums and claimed to, among other things, activate effects that were still contained in the game's code but were rendered inaccessible to players. Ubisoft later confirmed there were indeed such options buried in the code, explaining that they had been intentionally kept away from gamers because of their effect on performance and gameplay.

"The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we've set out to achieve," Ubisoft said following the mod's initial release. "We test and optimize our games for each platform on which they're released, striving for the best possible quality. The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality."

Ubisoft went on to describe the problems that could arise from using the mod, saying, it "subjectively enhances the game's visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable."

Watch Dogs was released on May 27 and became Ubisoft's fastest-selling game ever. In just one week, it sold over four million copies, and has gone on to ship over 8 million copies. It was also the top-selling game at retail in the US during May and June.

Improved graphics won't matter much, as it never will. I stopped playing this game halfway the campaign because I wasn't entertained while playing it; it felt more like a repetitive chore.....

<< LINK REMOVED >> Indeed, I actually had to go through a modded XML file and manually lower dozens of values slightly to make it playable, it worked like a charm but it was a hassle when they could have easily done the same (it looks almost identical) , horrible optimization on that game, I really hope AC Unity isn't the same, but with Ubi apparently wanting platform parity and not caring about PC optimization I expect a game that doesn't take advantage of powerful PC hardware, and is optimized like sh1t, who knows though maybe after the bad reaction from the PC launch of WD they have learned something.

I think another big problem with the PC version of WD was extremely compressed textures, the PC version sports higher resolution textures yet is much smaller than the current gen console version, Ubi really needs to step it up or I won't be buying their games to often, and they used to be one of my favorite developers and publishers not all that long ago.

The last 5 years or so have seen these companys cut so many of these small corners that individually dont seem all that bad, but when you look at the whole picture, they just end up with garbage in the end. Its sickening how far and fast they bow down to the stock market.

Meaning they are capping the PCs graphics at the console level. It really seems like ubisoft is not even going to try on PC anymore.

I keep reading these comments over and over again by the conspiracy theory types that think Ubi intentionally downgraded their game to make the consoles look better. Check out this article by Eurogamer... these are Digital Foundry people that do the in depth articles about game frame rates and resolution. They said the in game graphical enhancements that were removed and found within the game code "downgrade the performance of the game to a considerable degree" when they are enabled. Judging by the recommended settings for watch dogs it's more likely the stuff was cut to allow more people to play the game decently.

The E3 2012 version of the game had all these neat effects on, So yes by showing that version of the game and then releasing them without it is deceptive. But nothing console gamers have been going through for years and years. Look at Evolve for instance this year. What was shown was the game running on a high end PC. Turtle Rock wouldn't even talk about what the game is going to be like on the consoles. I believe Batman was running on a PC as well.


I can't imagine what some game devs. go thru when they are trying to figure out if something is actually wrong with a game and you have all this misinformation and but-hurt flying around. Perhaps all the drama gets in the way of actually fixing problems or making games better when at times it is very hard to tell how much of the talk is actual people with problems or just drama and hot air. I mean if you care about games and making them better through sharing your experience with them, I can't see how spreading stuff about the game which isn't nec. true can help things. Just my 2 cp

Back to EA's forums to try to get BF4 working again. Feel like I am having an Angry Joe episode after the last patch killed my game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are a few things Ubisoft downgraded in the PC version on purpose, simply changing one line from "console" to "pc" in the game settings file gives you the PC's original ultra textures, not the ones they tried to make people use when they could easily change the texture resolution in the graphics options, that is intentional downgrading.

I've played with many settings that have very little impact on performance and make it look much better, I can make 200 rain drops a second and change rain density and it has a minimal impact on performance.

Ubisoft purposely downgraded the PC version, yes it is true that some of the effects were simply not feasible in an open world game and had to be cut but many others did not.

@dribblesbarbax I think they were really afraid if they released WD with these options turned on on PC and release the current state of the game on the current consoles. They would of had insane backlash from the MS/Sony and it's console gamers.


Pretty much the same happened with Dark Souls 2.

But I was merely talking about the whole downgrade issue. Guess they didn't go through with it either, because the old gen couldn't handle that lighting engine they took out and it would of been a big night and day difference between the two versions (console vs PC).


At least in Dark Souls 2 although we can't bring that awesome lighting engine back we can use downscalling to make it even prettier, but you know what they say about polished turds..it's still a turd (or looks like one).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeh the lighting engine showed early on was great and was true to the games vision, it wasn't the only thing cut but it was one of the best things cut from the game, the textures, fire effects and many other things were downgraded extremely, you would think looking at screenshots it was from 2 different generations of consoles.

It's not a mod..this configuration was already in the code and this guy looked for it and found it.


I recommended this to a friend that couldn't play it on a Radeon 5990 and after doing it he finally got the game to a playable state even with all those options turned on.

Ubisoft really couldn't keep parity from the footage they've shown at E3 2012 (PC) with the console version hence why they had to downgrade it to how it was when it was released. There was even messages written in the code "PC options no one cares" (in the code) and E3 2012 with all options turned off (all the features that this "mod" enables).
